College athletes are being cheated out of millions of dollars every year, simple as that. For some reason we believe that college athletes are just “amateurs” and don’t need to be compensated for the hard work they do every day. The reason gigantic stadiums are constructed are to showcase the hard work and effort of college athletes. While everybody else around the athletes receives a good amount of money, the athletes don’t see any at all. Every day athletes risk a career ending injuries, which results in a loss of their scholarship, and a life full of pain and countless medical bills. College athletes should be given enough money to pay for full attendance to their chosen school. This means that classes, books, supplies, tutors, food, and means of travel should all be paid for. Athletes shouldn’t have to spend a dime on anything required to get them through school. This all might sound crazy, but without the athletes the NCAA loses billions of …show more content…
Giving young athletes that much money would just get them in trouble. What we need to do is give them enough money for the full cost of attendance to their college. According to Warren Zola who is the Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs at Boston College, “This limitation is $3,200 less, on average, than the full cost of attendance”. By this he means that a full ride scholarship on average pays for everything except that $3,200 that is not covered under the scholarship. Is it really all that expensive for universities to spend a little more money to get their student athletes college? No, not at all! The concessions generated from one football game would be enough to pay each football player $3,200. When I found out that a full ride scholarship didn’t actually pay for everything, I was mind blown. These athletes sacrifice so much time just to play to sport they love. They completely deserve a completely free college
College athletes do not get as much compensation as they deserve and need more than a standard scholarship i know this because according to “Dave Anderson” and the article “10 Reasons College Athletes should
The colleges need to pay the athletes with scholarships because it will be better for the college and students. It will accomplish with their needs because they have the money to pay college so they do not drop out. If they do that the college will look good and get fame. The athletes have the right to be paid because they do work If they do not get paid with scholarships and drop out it is going to look bad for the
These college students do not even see a dime of the income that is received from the college. Some players are more popular and advanced than others, but most of the merchandise is sold under the team brand name. A lot of the revenue is used to pay athletic directors and coaches of the college, but none is given to the athletes who are actually performing the labor. College athletes attributes a lot of revenue to colleges, so they should be rewarded
According to Krikor Meshefejian, a student athlete’s scholarship has a value “close to $200,000 over four years” (Meshefejian). Many student athletes that are on an athletic scholarship leave college after one to three years to enter their sport professionally, so this number is misleading. Most athletic scholarships also only cover a portion of tuition, books, room, and other fees. Even the very few players that are on a full ride scholarship are left without any spending money while the NCAA and universities make millions off them. Tutors are not allowed to offer athletes any service or benefits that is not available to the rest of the student body.
Many athletes feel discourage and mistreated because the don’t receive any of the money that is generated on their accounts. Why should others keep benefiting from their performance while they get nothing back. College athletes should be paid disregarded by what others say. It is very obvious to all those involved that the athletes sacrificing their time and bodies should be earning compensation for all of the revenue that they are generating into the college system and and what the NCAA makes off of them. As athletes, they work hard on the field every day to bring in fans and wins for their school; it’s only fair that they are rewarded for their efforts, at least in some small
Only 30% of Division 1 basketball players who accepted scholarships will graduate college, and only 40% of football players with scholarships will get a degree. Just how well spent would the money be that college athletes were to receive if over half of these student-athletes do not care enough to graduate college even with scholarships? Schools would spend millions of dollars a year paying these athletes and it is very probable that much of it would be spent irresponsibly. We have seen many examples of college athletes spending money given to them in careless ways in the history of college athletics. Scholarship athletes competing at the collegiate level should not get compensated because they are amateur athletes, many of them are already receiving compensation in the form of scholarships, and paying every college athlete would ultimately be a costly burden to taxpayers and fans.
The average tuition and fees for a private university is $30,094, these top-level athletes have their tuition and fees already paid for. That is more than enough, 30,094 dollars a year for the four years in college, that’s over 100,000 dollars these athletes are saving and yet they keep pushing for more. The NCAA should never pay these athletes for their competition, athletes already have so many more benefits than the average student, yes, and athletes have more responsibilities than a normal student, but not over 100,000 dollars’ worth. Also if the NCAA were to pay division 1 college football players, what about the other division 1 sports who put in just as much or more time? Would they get paid too?
College athletes bring in a lot of money to their universities. Players should get some of this money because without them, schools wouldn’t be able to receive the popularity and funding they get when they compete in athletics. Most schools get a lot of their money from fans who attend sporting events, but if the sporting program is not successful, then the fans wouldn’t want to come and pay to watch a game. Colleges make enough money from college athletes that the college should pay them back in some way. Colleges should take better care of their student-athletes by paying them for their performance.
These athletes even more then others should receive some sort of payment/financial aid to help them grow as a student and an athlete. The NCAA makes around 1 billion dollars a year and is fastly gaining connections to even more networks, websites and, newspapers. There are only some 500,000 D1 college athletes across 24 sports so if they were to only pay the top 3 women's and men's sports they would still gain nearly the same amount of money as before plus they would make a better name for themselves across the sports world. If the NCAA was to pay the student-athletes this may also make more athletes stay instead of leaving for the pros after a year or two because they could settle with a little money before going pro, in fact, Jim Rome an ex-college football player said this "If I would have had the chance to take care of my family through college, I would have probably stayed in college. " This means that if the athletes were given a small amount of money they would have more of a financial cushion if there pro career didn’t work
Almost no people who make this argument reflect on this before they talk about it. Colleges and universities give many of their student athletes tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of scholarships, many of which are full rides, for them to play for the school. College educations are without a doubt very expensive and very valuable in today’s society. When student athletes are given free college education they should not be entitled to more payment. Why should they deserve more if they are still just
In America sports wherever there is people, there will also be sports. Sports have played a major role in American history. To some people sports is all they have. It is just the way that things are. The issue in sports now is that the NCAA exploit the sports world and the very backbone of the corporation is the poorest. It is an issue that has been around for quite some time now. The issue is that the sports world face is the fact that college athletes are not paid, although they perform in a multibillion dollar industry. The NCAA basically has a monopoly on college athletics, and generate about one billion dollars a year. College sports are extremely demanding both in and out of season, and these athletes put their future on the line. The NCAA should be legally obligated to compensate athletes, based solely on the fact that the money made, is from their performance.
College athletics is a big time money maker for universities. Universities sell memorabilia, tickets to games, and great tailgating gear. The games are also aired on television were millions of people watch. Universities bring in tons of revenue every year, but where does it go? Not to the stars of the show. Athletes work hard to make their schools proud, but work so hard on their athletic skills; they have no time to actually work for extra money. Because college athletes have no time to support themselves, the school they attend should provide additional funding.
Even though an additional $2,000 a semester does not seem like a lot of money, for some smaller market colleges this extra expense may create problems. That is why I suggest either requiring the NCAA itself to provide the extra money to the players or allowing the players to make money off of jersey sales, autograph signings, etc. By potentially taking this financial burden away from the schools and transferring it the NCAA you avoid putting undo stress on smaller schools and instead ask the NCAA, a multi-billion dollar industry, to barely dip into their huge expanse of funding/profit. Furthermore, the NCAA itself is considered a non-profit organization so instead of hoarding the billions of dollars a year that it earns it should be giving money back to the student-athletes who have made the NCAA what it is today (SOURCE). Even though many schools would not be able to pay student athletes the extra scholarship money many larger schools could easily provide this additional scholarship money. For instance, some schools already pay their head football coaches millions of dollars a year. One specific example of this is Alabama Head Football coach Nick Saban. Saban makes six million dollars a year and also receives other
Most student athletes do not stay a whole four years in college before advancing to the next level or leaving to go into the work field. Some say 25000 dollars is a lot of money but others claim that it does not pay for mysterious fees and dorm charges and book fees. Others claim that with a scholarship not paying for mandatory objects to attend college, students that play sports and go to class will also have to obtain a job. They will have no free time to do anything. Some state that whenever the college athletes season starts up they will have to quit the job the work at because they will be on the road for one to two weeks at a time.
College athletes are taken advantage of and deserve to be compensated for their services while playing sports. These students are exploited and used to make money and out of everything that particular school makes, the athlete never given a penny of it. All of the hard works, blood, sweat and tears that they put into that
