Is privilege inherited or earned? As an American I’ve come to the realization that people in this country inherit privilege. “White privilege provides white people with “perks” that they do not earn. White privilege is not a myth and is a reality. Racism is a touchy topic and people try to avoid it. Racism is still a major problem that America faces. The criminal justice organization is racist. White privilege includes stereotypical labels on minority groups. Discrimination against blacks occurs in the workplace. White privilege is practiced regularly and is highly unacknowledged. Historically racism has pervaded the administration of justice in America. In the media there is always stereotypical terms used to describe a black person. Racial discrimination in the workplace happens all the time and most of us aren’t aware of it. Racism still exists and white privilege is going on right under our noses. …show more content…
If a black person and a white person each commit a crime, the black person is more likely to be arrested. “A black man and a white man can smoke the same amount of marijuana, the black man is 3.7 times more likely to get arrested. If both men gets arrested the black male has a greater chance of being incarcerated.”
“Mass media have played and will continue to play a crucial role in the way white Americans perceive African-Americans”. The media use words to depict an African American in the news. For example, during hurricane katrina in 2005 two men stole from a grocery store. The article for the black man said a young man walks after "looting" a grocery store. The same article said that the white man “found” food in the grocery store. When a black man commits a crime and it makes the news the man is perceived as a thug or hood. When a white boy commits a crime he is considered mentally
Ms. McIntosh made a particularly resonant statement about halfway through her essay; “my skin color was an asset for any move I was educated to want to make.” I have always been free to move around the country, to make my own choices, own my independence and enjoy the freedom of my liberation. Considerations she includes on her list of privileges never actively entered into my decision making process. I was always able to find suitable housing and employment and educational opportunities to advance myself in anyway I decided. This made me wonder if in fact I had earned through merit and achievement all I believe I have to date.
As a class have began to swim into unchartered territories as counselors in training. While I can only speak for myself, I think that many of my classmates would agree that we have all have felt uncomfortable at some point or another about the topics that we have discussed in this class. Whether the discomfort stems from the topic of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, or all the above, I believe that it is necessary for us to feel this way before we can understand and normalize these topics in our minds. Now we must ask ourselves where do we go from here?
"Black men are seven times likely to go to prison than are white men; black women are eight times likely to go than are white women. The lifetime likelihood of incarceration for aggregate numbers requires some getting used to. If today's imprisonment stays stable, nearly one-third of black males
“The sensitivity around stereotypes and distortions largely arises, then, form the powerlessness of historically marginalized groups to control their own representation.” Since Black people are the minority, they have no control over how they are represented in the media. As Shothat had mentioned in his article, “In the media there is a tendency to represent Black males as potential delinquents.” The misrepresentation of most Black males, affects them significantly; therefore, since they
Whites are less likely to encounter with the police compared to African Americans. African Americans are twice likely to be arrested and almost four times likely to experience the use of force during police encounters (Costly, 2011). As stated earlier, other sociological factors need to be eliminated to attribute the high number of Black arrests to race. Poverty is known to be a predisposing factor for criminal acts according to the strain theory of
What is privilege? What does it mean? Is privilege inherited or is it earned? As an American resident of color I’ve learned that privilege in this country is something that is innate and inherited. The privilege that I speak of is that of White privilege.
By associating the potential existence of racism with consumption, a form of rationalization is that we now live in society that does not recognize and reward race, but merit. In turn, whites do not inherently realize the privileges that they are born with. Peggy McIntosh actually used the terms unearned entitlement and unearned advantage to describe disproportionate lead that whites have over blacks (McIntosh, 103). The fact of the matter is that most white people are in denial that they have been born with unearned entitlements that minorities do not have and according to McIntosh this is because they have been taught not to recognize it. As much as white people have been taught not to recognize that they have been given white privilege, blacks and minorities recognize that they do. Although many believe that the playing field is now level, is apparent that there is an uphill struggle for people of color. But how should one first recognize this struggle?
Many white Americans are living with the fear that they didn't really deserve their success, and that maybe luck and privilege had more to do with it, than brains and hard work. There are numerous reasons for the widespread discrimination at all levels, but the main reason for the existence of discrimination is a privilege to certain groups of people, and widespread social prejudice towards certain groups of people. Differences between people have always existed, but they gain in importance only when are different importance given to certain differences, so it creates privileges. People who are privileged in one society are often not aware of their privilege. It is very easy to be oblivious to the privilege. The problem of discrimination
Peddy McIntosh highlighted various unearned white privileges in her autobiographical article “White Privilege, Color and Crime: A Personal Account.” She illustrated the white privilege as an invisible package of unearned assets that one white person could count on cashing in each day. White people have these privileges given to them by the society in which they live in. The same society taught them to be ignorant and unawareness of these privileges. This system of unearned privileges established by white individuals made people of color feel oppressed. In this system being white is a norm and dominant power. Caucasians, who benefit most from the white privilege system in the United States, are more likely to
Racism is defined as prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior. In the workforce, the issue of racism and discrimination has been brought to the center of conversations around the world. Companies claim to be “colorblind” and not hire somebody based on their race or gender, but the employment rates among minorities and women around the world is significantly lower than the majority in the given country. There is also the growing issue of minorities, such as blacks in america, making significantly less money than whites. This issue affects people all around the world who happen
Racism and discrimination continue to be a prevalent problem in American society. Although minorities have made significant strides toward autonomy and equality, the images in media, specifically television, continue to misrepresent and manipulate the public opinion of blacks. It is no longer a blatant practice upheld by the law and celebrated with hangings and beatings, but instead it is a subtle practice that is perceived in the entertainment and media industries. Whether it’s appearing in disparaging roles or being negatively portrayed in newscasts, blacks continue to be the victims of an industry that relies on old ideas to appeal to the majority. The viscous cycle that is the unconscious racism of the media continues to not only be
I wanted to say thank you once again for the past three days of lectures and your willingness to allow me to ask you a wide variety of questions. We have had many incredible professors this year teaching on a wide variety of topics. While I can't pick a favorite, you and Victor Claar have most definitely have stood out to me.
Abstract- Racial discrimination happens all the time and most of us are unaware of it. The most common place for this to happen is in the workplace. Now people can be discriminated against because of their race, religion, or any other numerous things. Also, discrimination can occur during the job interview or even after you got the job. This paper will shoe the effects of racial discrimination and how it can be prevented. In addition there are some very important laws that deal specifically with discrimination, like the NAACP or Affirmative Action. These both will be discussed.
“Why do the white men have so much cargo and we new guineans have so little?” -Yali. When jared diamond was in Papua New Guinea a man named Yali asked him a question “Why do the white men have so much cargo and we new guineans have so little?” So this caused him to look in why the world was unequal. It boiled down to geography was the biggest source of inequality which led to four big categories for inequality they are Crops/Agricultural, Animal Domestication, Germs, and the manufacturing of steel and other metals.
Discrimination in the workplace occurs when an employee experiences harsh or unfair treatment due to their race, religion, national origin, disabled or veteran status, or other legally protected characteristics. Discrimination is one of the biggest problems people face in the workplace and it must be dealt with forcefully.
