Rationale
Mark Haddon wrote ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night- Time’ from the perspective of a 15-year-old autistic child, Christopher Boone. After discovering that Wellington, the pet dog of his neighbor, was killed, Christopher starts to survey the case in order to uncover the murderer. However, he accidently discovers that his father, Ed, lied to him about his supposedly ‘dead’ mother, and was also responsible for the dead dog. He therefore isolates himself further due to his adamant principles that no lies could be allowed.
I am convinced that Christopher can be too self-centered in the novel and does not concern himself with others’ feelings. This characteristic leads to Christopher becoming isolated from society. I am going to take his mother’s, Judy Boone’s, perspective and write a diary, showing her concern for Christopher. I will write this diary so that a gentle voice will function and underline the importance of social interaction. I will continue to use the casual tone that Haddon uses for the mother in the book and give some specific events of Christopher’s immaturity when dealing with interpersonal relationships. What is more, incorrect spelling happens frequently in the mother’s letters. She wrote “timetable” into “timetabel”, “wooden”

I remember when I went to Christopher’s school once for parents’ evening… I thought all of his classmates were easy and positive. I think it was Edward and Steve who were able to communicate with us confidantly and naturally. They knew some general social rules and it was comfortable at least. They also knew that being polite is the basic rule. But Christopher is just too immature to imagine others’ feelings. I am so worried about his future and my ability to help him grow. Ed must be on the way to the house. How can I protect Christopher from him? I really need Christopher to understand all of these and help me getting rid of this awkward
Christopher has major conflictions with his father throughout the novel. He was lead to believe that his mother was dead, when in reality; his father had been keeping a major secret and had been lying to his son the entire novel about his mother’s wellbeing. Christopher’s mother had been writing him letters a couple times every week for a couple of years. Conversely, Christopher’s father had been hiding the letters after he told his son that his mother had died from a heart attack. His mother had actually just been having an affair with a neighbor, and his father couldn’t figure out a way to explain that to Christopher. “Mother had not had a heart attack. Mother had not died. Mother had been alive all the time. And father had lied about this”(112). While his father may have had good intentions by lying to Christopher, to him it seems as if his father had been keeping secrets from his because he believed he was incapable of understanding them. Christopher’s father has lost his son’s trust, and Christopher felt betrayed. He couldn’t believe that his own father, his parent who had been nurturing him ever since his mother had been gone was capable of lying to his face about something that big. In addition, another external conflict was between Wellington and whoever killed him. The story began with the dog’s murder, and after a sequence of events it was
