The escape of Mas Selamat was one of the major political scandals that occurred in Singapore, which involved the one and only prison break of a highly dangerous terrorist.
Mas Selamat bin Kastari began his involvement in terrorism in the early 90s when he joined a precursor movement to the Jemaah Islamiah (also known as the JI) group. An Indonesian-born Singaporean, he headed to Afghanistan for training, where he devoted his time and attention to gaining knowledge of the Taliban system of governance in his early thirties. He was also suspected to have devised the plot to bomb Singapore Changi Airport in January 2002, followed by the planning of hijacking a plane scheduled from Bangkok and crashing it into Singapore Changi Airport. He was

Being cautious, he kept little contact with the villagers after moving into the village and will occassionally tend the compound's garden.
On 1 April 2009, Mas Selamat was arrested by the Malaysian authorities in Johor. The operation consisting personnel from Royal Malaysian Police, Special Branch and Special Actions unit broke through the doors and rushed into the house when Mas Selamat refused to surrender when ordered by the team. The news was then announced to the public through the Singapore media on 8 May 2009, which later was confirmed by both the Singapore and Malaysian governments. Mas Selamat was being held under the Internal Security Act by the Malaysian government, based on the ground that Mas Selamat was scheming a plan leading to the arrest.
Mas Selamat was deported back to Singapore for detention under the Internal Security Act on 24 September 2010.
What has attributed to Mas Selamat successful arrest was the sharing of intelligence reports among the involved parties (Malaysia Special Brand and
In the following days, the AFP conducted thorough forensic investigations into the source of the bombings, as well as the scenes of the crimes. The forensic material was then processed in Australia after an emergency amendment to the Crimes Act, 1901 (Cth) was passed. This speedy response from the nations federal politicians allowed the processing of forensic data from offshore (Bali) in the highly sophisticated labs located in Australia. This quick response is what ensured the integrity of the forensics and ultimately what allowed the bombers to be arrested. With the support of forensic examination, the investigation progressed quickly. This led to the arrest by the INP of the first suspect, Amrozi bin Nurhasyim (Amrozi), on November 5, 2002, and the subsequent identification of other suspects. A second joint INP and AFP investigation team was formed to pursue the remaining suspects, which led to the arrest of Imam Samudra and a number of other suspects on 21 November 2002. This was followed by the arrests of Ali Ghufron (Muklas) on December 4, 2002, and Ali Imron on January 12, 2003. The rapid legal responses from the AFP and the Parliament is what allowed the arrest of the bombers, in what was a greatly effective response.
Reflecting on this course over this semester, there have been many lessons learned that will be valuable, as we enter the business world. Our first lesson was to learn to work together, as a team, to prepare a short memo, long memo, letter, and email for use in the business world. This is a lesson that will experience many times as we do our daily work. Punctuation and grammar are so important to present to the client and other organizations that we are professionals. It could mean the loss of a sale or acquiring new business. It’s like dressing for work; looking professional or unprofessional.
Cinco de Mayo means the fifth of May. It is not an independence day for Mexico like most unknowledgeable people think. Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on the 15th of September. Mexico declared independence from Spain on the 24th of August 1821. Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday either. Mexico and the United States savor this holiday because it is the day where Mexican peasants/ commoners defeated the French and Mexican traitor army that double them in size in Puebla, Mexico one hundred miles away from Mexico city on the 5th of May, 1862.
In 1745, Olaudah Equiano was born in a small village in Isseke,Nigeria. His father was one of the chiefs in the village. In the graphic novel Maus II by Art Spiegelman the story follows the author and protagonist, Art, as his father retells his experience throughout the Holocaust. The story switches between the present of Art's father, Vladek, telling the story and Art and his wife, Francoise, and their experience in staying with Vladek for a couple days, and then back in time to vivid flashbacks of Vladek's time in the concentration camps. In the past Vladek appears resourceful, caring and personable, but when switched to the present Vladek is apparently frustrating to be around as Art exemplifies him as being pushy and obsessive. During Vladek’s time in the concentration camps he is able to survive time and time again due to his resourcefulness and when he
I am going to tell you about a famous, yet kinda eerie celebration that takes place in mexico. This is a tradition celebrated by the Mexican Natives, most Mexican Americans (including myself) don’t even acknowledge this day, unless they happen to be visiting mexico at the time of this event.
In their life, at one point or another, people deny to themselves and others what they really feel and what really happened. Some people go on living their entire lives denying their true emotions. In Toni Morrison’s novel Sula, characters constantly denied their feelings and their actions. Sula Peace, her best friend Nel Wright, and Nel’s mother do not listen to their feelings and hide from their true emotions.
"Segu is a garden where cunning grows. Segu is built on treachery. Speak of Segu outside Segu, but do not speak of Segu in Segu" (Conde 3). These are the symbolic opening words to the novel Segu by Maryse Conde. The kingdom of Segu in the eighteenth and nineteenth century represents the rise and fall of many kingdoms in the pre-colonial Africa. Therefore, Segu indirectly represents the enduring struggles, triumphs, and defeats of people who are of African decent in numerous countries around the world. There are three major historical concepts that are the focus of this book. One is the spread of the Islamic religion. Another is the slave trade, and the last is the new
On November 15th of this year, the painting “Saviour of the World” (“Salvator Mundi”) sold for $450,312,500 at Christie’s auction house in New York. Do you feel like people should be able to express their feelings freely? 18 year old Amos Yee is being put in jail for that reason. In the article “Singapore Teen Submits US Asylum Claim in Immigration Court”, there are three human rights being violated. Free to say what you want, unfair detainment, and the right to an asylum.
Mumbai police arrested two girls Shaheen Dhada and Rinu Srinivasan in 2012 for communicating their dismay at a bandh brought in the wake of Shiv Sena boss Bal Thackery 's demise. The girls posted their remarks on the Facebook. The arrested girls were discharged later on and it was decided to drop the criminal cases against them yet the arrests of them pulled in across the country protest. It was presumed that the police has abused its authority by invoking Section 66A at the same time it is a breach of fundamental right of speech and expression. The offence under section 66A of IT act being cognizable, law enforcement agencies have authority to arrest or investigate without warrants, based on charges brought under the information technology act. The outcome of this was many highly famous arrests of people throughout the country for posting their views and opinions whereas govt called them ‘objectionable content’ but more often these content were dissenting political opinions. In January 2013, the central govt had turned out with an advisory under which no person can 't be arrested without the police having prior approval of inspector general of police or any other senior official to him/her . The Supreme Court called all the petition related to constitutional validity of information technology act or any section within it under single PIL case known as “Shreya Singhal v. Union of India.”[W.P.(crl).No.167 of 2012]
After Indonesian independence, the HIR adopted with some conditions. It made many interpretations of its law enforcement implementations. (Purnomo, 1984 : 21) Since then, the law enforcement institutions such as the police and the IPS competed to get the powerful authority than another (Lev, 2000 : 74-97). The police was not the hulp magistraat (part of the prosecution service) anymore, they shifted out its investigation authority from the IPS supervision to be more independent, the judicial supervision for the indictment to the IPS was revoked and the IPS was part of the executive.
First of all, there are certain parts that accumulate to make Mas Selamat’s escape so successful in the end. On 27 February 2008, Mas Selamat was collected from his cell by two Gurkha guards for a 4pm visit by his family. As per the standard operating procedure (SOP), Mas Selamat was brought to a locker room to change into civilian clothes. Citing privacy, Mas Selamat requested to change behind the locker. This is where the first mistake emerged, where the Gurkha guards lost total sight of Mas Selamat, which is contrary to the SOP. He was supposed to change into a yellow baru kurong and greenish grey trousers. Also, after the change, he should have handed his detention uniform to the guards but this was not done. This could be possible that he wore his civvies over his uniform. That is the second mistake that was contrary to the SOP.
