Life Outside the Cubicle by Jen Beck Seymour was such a fantastic read for me that I just couldn’t put it down! I absolutely loved Jen’s story of her finding what truly matters in life to her and her husband Greg. Jen’s life altering change by dropping everything she’s ever known and moving abroad to Costa Rica is inspiring, uplifting, and maybe above all BRAVE!!! So let’s get into Jen’s book and her story a bit. Jen and Greg seemed to be by most accounts your average American couple running the rat race in Dallas, Texas. After years of being treated subpar by their employers and vast amounts of work-related stress taking its toll on their health, especially Greg’s, they decided for the benefit of their sanity and future happiness to give it all up and move to Costa Rica. Now, this might be a crazy thought to most people, but actually more and more people are turning to this “out of the box” lifestyle. What may seem as frightening to most people, ended up being the best possible move Jen and Greg could have made, and their lives are now forever enriched for it. Their story …show more content…
She isn’t verbose and looking to just fill in sentences, she had a lot that she wanted to tell you and managed to get it all in without drowning on, she hits her message home right from page 1. I also found the book to fast-paced which was great for getting inspirational story through to the reader (Life’s short, get to work) My final thought is that “Life Outside the Cubical” was just a fun read in an ever increasing depressing world. Sometime you just need to step back and find some good and listen to other people out there who may feel the way you do about the important things. I highly recommend this book for anyone who just needs to hear something that upbeat for a change, or for anyone who is serious about making life altering, meaningful, changes in their life. A++ on this little book of
She uses unique words and phrases, metaphors and descriptions, and witty but informative tone. She opens the readers’ minds up to what the world we are living in is becoming. It is everyone for themselves, therefore every individual should become educated on every subject that they can handle. There is no possible way someone should overeducate themselves; it is just an impossibility. Imagine what life would be like if eventually everyone only knew about what their degree was in. There would not be many conversations, no improvement in the quality of life, a shorter survival rate, etc. The worst feeling in the world is feeling useless or worthless which could happen if you do not expand your knowledge. Go out in the world and learn what can be learned by observing, reading, studying, listening, asking, tasting, touching, smelling, or anything that helps you learn. The world needs more intelligence in every area. It is time that we take a stand and educate ourselves and others as much as we possibly
She was doing show a lot of emotions and openly her feeling about her experience and life in the book. She was telling everyone to stand up for themselves and show who they are. Some people who struggled with being in Deaf and Hearing world because they are Deaf with can read lips or hard-of-hearing with read lips. She realized which she was successful in the Deaf world because she was deaf and more easily communicate with other people. She adopted Zoe and it was impacted her life because she showed her emotions and explained why Zoe cannot able adopted by other families because she was
I have chosen to read the book "The Quiet Room" by Lori Schiller. I truly appreciate books that allow me to see what it's like in the shoes of someone with a serious mental illness. This is based on a true story of Schiller's personal struggle with schizo-affective disorder. This book relates to my life because of how I deal with mentally ill patients in my work everyday. The story left me overwhelmed by the serious emotions and terrifying journey that this woman persevered. "The Quiet Room" is a testimony of how schizophrenia can affect a person, involving auditory hallucinations, delusions, and experimenting
manner, allowing the reader to easily understand her point of view. Her life experiences are a very good
Besides wording like this, her writing is easy to read even for someone who has little to no background knowledge of what she talks about.
While she is up there speaking through her very soul, you can automatically feel a deep connection to her and her writing. No matter what struggles you go through in life, putting yourself into the mind of someone else who might just be dealing with the same exact problems, can help a person more than anyone could think. Even though it was a question and answer with a presentation, it felt like so much more; without even reading an excerpt from one of her books, you can still hear the very same unique tone and emotional depth speak through her very words. After I left the panel, reading her books became so much more of an emotional and heartfelt ride.
The film “Office Space” depicts several employees at a software firm trying and failing at rebelling against the company they work for. The revolutions against the management and their subsequent failures are explained by Karl Marx’s theories on the proletariat and bourgeoisie in The Communist Manifesto. The workers were not going far enough in their attempts to improve their lives.
There was not a single moment in which I became bored with it. She grabbed my attention instantaneously, a picture of what was occurring painted in my mind from the very first sentence when, “Jillian Grey anxiously searched the crowd, hoping to catch a glimpse of the man that she would begin her new life with.” While reading the novel, I found myself experiencing numerous emotions. At times, I was thoroughly happy. At others, I was angry or upset.
This book is amazing in itself. Susan Orlean creates this novel by exploring all different kinds of people and places she encounters and write a chapter or 2 on each. I really enjoyed this book because usually regular books get boring with the same plot but, Orlean keeps the story alive with a new plot constantly. This keeps you interested for example she would go from a 10 year old that loves recycling to Danny’s Pizzeria the story switched which is what I admire most about this book. In addition, i love her visual detail and how whatever she is explaining is
The book I chose is Mothering Mother: A Daughter’s Humorous and Heartbreaking Memoir written by Carol O’Dell. This book appealed to me because I enjoy to read books that are based on true events or ones that captures the reader by reading the summary on the back of the book. This book captured my attention in that sense. With O’Dell using her daily journals, I believe it caught the real meaning of everything a caregiver does to make this particular book interesting.
She goes in right away with explaining that all authors, even the great ones, right shitty first drafts. She described the perfect writing session (that everyone imagines according to her) and she explains it so well that I feel that I am actually there. I struggle a reading and writing so when I read a book or story that is written so well that you feel that you are actually there is great, for me anyways. Her example of how to treat the first draft of the paper like a child is great too because children don’t write well (“Shitty First
Why did I choose to write about workaholics? The main reason is that the general picture about these people is bad, but there are a lot of them around us and very often we admire them. They are doing exactly what they love – work – and they can never have enough of it. Although they spend most of their time working, surprisingly they are happy. They show so good results in what they do. But the consequences are great. Family life is disrupted, intellectual horizons narrow and the consequences to the workaholic's health are severe: fat, lack of exercise and stress. Why do people become workaholics? When a person becomes workaholic is there a way back? How should people around him act in order to keep both him and themselves
Personally, to me, this book really showed me another example that the world isn't all sunshine and rainbows . I was intrigued that Jennifer went in so much detail and I really felt the emotion in the book. I feel like I connect to Jenifer because this could easily happen to me. I'm going off to college next year and I'll be going to Winston-Salem State University and what if I get sexually assaulted would I be able to outsmart my attacker. I know it's a possibility, but if that happen I don't know if i would be able to handle myself like she
If the workplace of today could be characterized by a single theme, it would most likely focus on the continual presence of change. Dramatic changes in technology, the marketplace and the workforce have compelled organizations to re-evaluate not only the competitiveness of their products, but also the core ways in which work is performed. It is out of this pursuit for continued survival that organizations have been faced with the notion of varying work-schedules beyond the traditional hours of nine to five. This paper will explore the societal and business changes that have led to a proliferation in flexible work patterns. This paper will also address the benefits and disadvantages of flexible work patterns for
Working in today’s society has changed in the last few decades. The economy and technology are the main reasons for this change. The type of job and environment where one works has also changed. The fact that many people work from home via the internet has drastically changed the workforce and the environment surrounding it. With this change have come new demands, expectations, and opportunities for employers. Everyone deals with these demands differently, affecting the employee’s quality of life and job satisfaction. Though the job and office types and locations have changed over the years the need for job satisfaction has not. In today’s economy the job is not as stable as it used to be. One must be prepared for changes in the future.
