Killing Them Softly is a 2012 crime movie that tells the story of Russell and Frankie, two lower-class white men who try anything to make some cash. The story also follows a man named Jackie who tries to kill Russell and Frankie for stealing money from him. This film touches on how money can cause violence and murder when in the wrong hands. The film is also seen as an allegory for the 2008 recession and how that impacted American citizens. This film relates to our course on capitalism by showing how the 2008 recession affected lower-class citizens and the things some of these people had to do to stay afloat. He does this because he lives in poverty, has an addiction, and doesn't have the education to think he should go to rehab, and even if he did, he wouldn't have the money to go to rehab. In the article Roberts-Baptiste, K., & Hossain, M. (2018, April). Socioeconomic disparities and self-reported substance abuse. The author states “a family income less than $20000 was 34% more likely to report having substance abuse-related problems compared to persons in the highest income category.” (Roberts-Baptiste & Hossain, 2018). The author uses a survey to gather this information, however they use a diverse selection of participants and a broad selection of questions to allow for accurate information. This study shows that Russell, living in the lower class, is more likely to have an addiction than someone who doesn't. If he didn't live in the lower class, he might've saved his money from his dog business instead of taking the job with Frankie, which ultimately ends up getting him killed. Throughout the film, Frankie is told how badly he smells, some characters even saying he smells worse than a barnyard. This is due to living in a dilapidated home in a low-class
