Diversity matters in health care is focus on the action, codified in the civil legislation for over forty years ago. Diversity matters correct discrimination by the organization when filling positions in order to search and to consider when hiring candidates with diverse racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The approach on diversity over time and there was no recognition when the diversity and it’s a valuable asset. As for a workplace experience in an organization should have a fresh perspective, different backgrounds, and being able to have alternative skills that are by the diverse employees that have a bottom line benefit for their business. Employees are to focus more on areas that are equip with tools for managing the new diversity that has soughed on the case for healthcare changes.

During World War one, the United States Navy Recruiting Bureau, and the United States Treasury Department each commissioned posters featuring women who encouraged citizens to participate in the war effort. The two posters, despite being intended for the same purpose, depict women in particularly contrasting light. Analysis of the contrasting war posters can help illustrate society’s perspective about women during the early 1900’s, their expected roles pertaining to the war effort, the strategies used to engage citizens and encourage them to become involved, and the use of imagery and symbolism that were used to achieve the posters’ objective.
In this week’s discussion, I will talk about ethnicity and what it means to me. Then I will explain how ethnicity can influence human services practices in my area of interest.
Diversity means respecting the difference in each person. The way in which the centre promotes diversity is when they look at each person individually, and come up with care plans in which ensures the best care for each person. This is needed because everyone is diverse (different) meaning each person will have different needs and need help in different areas. The centre puts into consideration the patient’s needs and adapts their care plan accordingly. For example, the centre came up with a very diverse care plan for Brenda Grey to improve her health wellbeing. The centre had to consider many things some of them being fitting in a health visitor whilst also having time to visit a GP. Brenda is also diverse because she didn’t want everyone ‘knowing her business’ therefor the centre had to also adapt and reassure her that nothing would be discussed with her knowing. In this world and society many people are not treated with the right type of respect in the healthcare field. While they are not treated with respect it causes more problems in their daily lives because they are not getting the right treatment for their health problem. I believe that people shouldn’t be treated differently when it comes to healthcare conditions. Just because they are less educate, poor, and their race/culture is different shouldn’t mean anything.
In recent years, there has been a predicted shortage of physicians in the United States of America by 2025, numbering between 46,000 and 90,000 physicians for a growing United States population 1. However, the more pressing issue will be an even bigger shortage of minority physicians. Minorities are underrepresented in medical facilities as students and faculty. However, one minority especially has been on the decline since 1978. African American males in the medical field have been on a steady downward trend. In 1978, 1,410 African American males applied to medical school, compared to 2014, when 1,337 African American males applied to medical school 2. Diversity is the process where all individuals are respected and valued the same. This means within a health and social care setting all individuals care is not obstructed or compromised by their differences whether this race, religion or gender.
Adapting to different cultural beliefs and practices requires flexibility and a respect for others view points. Cultural competence means to really listen to the patient, to find out and learn about the patient's beliefs of health and illness. To provide culturally appropriate care we need to know and to understand culturally influenced health behaviors. However, becoming culturally competent is a much more daunting task. Culture (and ethnicity) often influences a patient’s perceptions of health and illness. Therefore, if healthcare providers appear insensitive to cultural diversity, their actions may negatively affect the quality of the healthcare that they provide.
For health care workers, cultural competency is important for obvious reasons. On a daily basis, healthcare professionals work with patients of a variety of cultures, and many work with team members who come from different cultures than their own. Medical and other healthcare professionals spend many years in school learning how and when to treat patients for giving symptoms, but teaching them to interact with patients currently falls on knowing the things that make up a person’s cultural identity. Cultural differences that exist between people, such as language, dress and traditions, and the way societies organize themselves, their conception of morality and religion, attitudes about illness and death and the way they interact with the environment. Cultural competence is important in health care because the patient outcome, patient readmissions, staff retention, and labor relations all determine the outcome of an organizations success. Diversity improves the effectiveness and productivity of the workforce. Disadvantages of ignoring cultural diversity can result in a loss of revenue for the business. Company growth will also be affected by ignoring cultural diversity. Steps an organization should take to face this challenge is to implement training that cover workforce diversities and keep an open dialogue among employees expressing concerns, differences, ideas, etc.
