Being forced to move because of an emergency situation has cause a lot of people to panic. When we first learned about the lead and arsenic being in the dirt the mayor of East Chicago sent out letters to the residents of the West Calumet Complex. The mayor also informed us to go get tested and that we would have to relocate so that they could fix the situation. The mayor said that it would be best to relocate the people instead of trying to fix while people are still living there and he made it very clear that it’s not acceptable. The city has been working with the U.S department of housing and urban development to relocate about 1,000 residents including 680 children. They are talking about possibly demolishing the decade old public housing authority. Some people don’t know what to do because some of them have spent most of there life in that one particular community and to just pack up and move is not acceptable for them. Especially if you’re an elderly person and you don’t have that help from anyone at all. Even though you might have some people that’s been there for over a decade they don’t know where to start or how to move …show more content…
That site was named the uss lead company. Now that everyone is finding out all this information you have people asking questions out of nowhere. People are angry they want to know how long the East Chicago Housing Authority knew about the lead and arsenic. They want to know when they were going to let the tenants know anything. It’s so many questions that’s not answered we as the people know that there not going to give us the information that we need and it’s sad because we got put in a situation that we had no clue about. They never gave us an option to what we wanted to do or even ask if we need any help at all. It saddens me that even after they told people about it they were still moving people
in Flint that have been exposed to the dangerous levels of lead in their water. The government
As of March 17, 2016, the city's new public works administrator, Claude Tankersley have send out notice from the City to test lead near gun range. Which mentioned that the city will test up to 300 homes for unhealthy levels of leads to alleviate any fears of contamination of the city's water supply. Claude Tankersley goes on to explain that letters have been send to homeowners in every part of the city. He has disclosed that this program is not forced; indeed, it is voluntary. Its focus is to test the water distribution system and the water that comes out of faucets in the homes. Essentially, residents who live near the skyway trap and skeet Club have appealed to the City Council for months, claiming that the city's main water line, which runs
To begin with, the problem was the water contained elevated levels of iron and lead. The problem was such a huge issue because it affected every resident in Flint. Water is a major essential to one’s daily life and dozens of families were using the water supply for several purposes such as showering, drinking, cooking, washing one’s car or home, and watering plants. Furthermore, worried parents are going to the doctor because of rashes and hair loss, it also affected children by dropping their IQ, affecting their behavior, and it has also been inked to criminality and has multigenerational impacts. As a result, the fault of the problem lies with the state DEQ. It was said that the state ignored federal law and didn’t use an anti-corrosive agent to treat the water.
In her article, Flint Water Crisis, Dr. Mona Hann-Attisha, discusses the occurrence about highly elevated, possibly but not yet actually harmful levels of lead in the drinking water in Flint, Michigan, received national attention. She describes Flint, Michigan, was once a postindustrial home to flourishing automotive plants; the water crisis has been described as an example of government wrongdoing and disrepair by some and of a lack of omission by federal environmental regulators by others. She points to the tendency prior to a series of tests by independent researchers at Virginia Tech in October 2015, many residents found that their unease about the water’s taste, odor, and smell were being disregard intentionally by city and state officials,
There currently is a problem in the US with the government and how they cut corners with the water problem in Flint, Michigan. About two years ago, Michigan’s government decided they would save money by switching the water supply in Flint, Michigan. Before, Flint was getting their water from Lake Huron. Now, they are getting their water from the Flint River, known by it’s filth through the people of Flint. When reporters interviewed long-time residents of Flint they were shocked at the decision. The decision was supposed to be temporary, it wasn’t planned for it to go on for almost two years. Soon after the switch, the people of Flint saw the water didn’t look, smell, or taste right. It was almost as if the water was brown and you could see the dirt in it. Most people thought it was sewage but it turn out to be iron. The Flint River is highly contaminated, 19 times more so than Lake Huron. The state Department of Environmental Quality wasn’t treating the river so, the water was building up iron which caused the water to turn brown. The water was worse than it seemed, half the service line to homes in Flint are made of lead because the water wasn’t treated like it was supposed to be. The lead got into the water and mixed with the iron. The fire stations are helping with providing free bottled water and water filters for the homes. The fire stations also gave out lead testing kits
This brought about statewide publicity and eventually the Governor took action. Months later, Virginia Tech researcher discovered a seepage of lead waste and E.Coli in the Flint River. At first taken lightly by city officials , nothing was done. This is where the problems begin to unravel.
In the article “It’s All Just Poison Now”, Oliver Laughland and Ryan Felton discuss how the lives of the residents of Flint, Michigan have been negatively affected by the city’s tainted water supply. Flint’s aging lead pipes, coupled with its corrosive water sources, have cause a number of contaminants to seep into the water supply. On top of this, the city’s water supply is inadequately purified, which caused many residents to be exposed to these toxins. The main concern to residents is the presence of poisonous lead in the water, which can be deadly even in low amounts. The community of Flint has been unknowingly drinking and bathing in these chemicals, despite being told by city officials that the water was safe. As a result, many residents
The government decision and policies, are the national guard has handled a water bottle and water filter has been distributed. The author Delaney said the problem came from when the Flint government pull the city’s water from the Flint River instead of buying it from Detroit's system. Flint resident start to complain after they have Flint River water that the water facet was brown; and it was tested bad ,and caused rashes when they took a shower. The CDC final report says that “ there is scant scientific evidence to suggest a direct connection between lead in drinking water and lead absorption into the body”. Regarding to the Washington Post Health and science article said wrote month after the Flint whater's crisis The Environments Protection Agency ( EPA) intervention, the agency used it;s emergency powers to demand action by the state and the city. It;s regional leader, Susan Hedman resigned. State and federal investigation are underway, and there have been calls for Snyder to resign. Snyder apologized twice and "precedent Obama has weighed in, too, sharply criticizing the pace of Mishigan's response. But none of that can help repair the deep of people trust in their government.
The current water crisis in Flint, Michigan stems from government officials changing water sources. The government of Flint switched from using the water of Lake Huron, which they had used for over 50 years, to using the water of the Flint River, which had a high level of chloride. The high chloride level eventually led to the corrosion of water pipes allowing unhealthy levels of chlorine and lead contamination. Additionally, irresponsible and unreliable water treatment allowed even more contaminates to enter the city’s water source. All this pollution ultimately ended up in the homes of thousands of people, poisoning families throughout the city. Lead poisoning can have disastrous effects on the human body, with some symptoms including “memory loss, anemia (lack of healthy red blood cells), kidney dysfunction, and in severe
The lead effects in the drinking water have caused a massive public health crisis (“Scientific Opinion on the risks”, 2015). The whole crisis was as a result of poor management practices employed in the Flint water plant. The city decided to switch the
“Environmental racism is real…so real that even having the facts, having the documentation and having the information has never been enough to provide equal protection for people of color and poor people” “It takes longer for the response and it takes longer for the recovery in communities of color and low-income communities.” (Bullard, 1994:36)
The contamination began in April 2014 after the source of the town’s water supply was switched from Lake Huron to the Flint river in order to reduce governmental costs. This was done despite the fact that the Flint River had a strong history of pollution. Among this pollution included car parts, a dead body, and high levels of chemicals. (Semules par 5). Once the pipes were switched there were several complaints of the water having a foul smell and metallic taste (Foley par 4). In the beggining the government denied that anything was wrong despite the fact that lab examinations of the water proved otherwise. Two years after the Flint water crisis gained media attention, the Senate passed a bill that would provide Flint residents with water, but this is
Even so, the people of Flint are dealing with other issues, like health. In fact, the number of kids lead in their blood has doubled ever since tat switch. And this is something to worry about since that young children are still developing. The side effects are lower IQ, issues in behaviour and delays in development. Health workers are trying their best to lower the effect. They are educating their parents to feed their kids a good diet.
By having knowledge of the chromium in the water supply, PG&E should have been required to let the people know that were affected by it. By not telling the citizens, they were withholding information that affected these people’s lives. Because a risk was created, consequences came, and nothing was done to prevent such injuries that did occur, PG&E should have been considered negligent.
Who knew that Flints water could be deadly? Everyone should be allowed to have the same clean water to bathe in, drink, cook with, and to have fun in. Unfortunately, residents in Flint could not do this for quite some time. These residents were bathing and drinking from this water before the founding of high lead levels in it. Not only was it because of the high lead levels, but the pipes were very old as well. Due to actions made by the city council this caused a lot of problems for the residents in the city of Flint. This effected children, pregnant women, and the elderly the most. Many lawsuits were filed against the city of Flint. It was so serious to the point that Governor Snyder had to declare a state of emergency. This took place January 5th of 2016. High levels of lead in the water and old pipes lead to lawsuits, the sickness of Flint residents, and the city of Flint not doing their job.
