Character Weaknesses Analysis Essay And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie is a thrilling murder mystery loaded with symbols and ingenious foreshadowing. The book takes place in 1939 and stars 10 characters, all of whom have committed a murder but are untouchable by the law. These individuals were lured to Soldier Island, where they suspiciously started dying. They discovered that someone among them was their murderer. The book follows each character as they hunt down the killer. Justice Wargrave’s confession at the end of the story was shocking, the hanging judge was behind everything. Wargarve orchestrated each death to go along with a line from his childhood poem. Each of the nine other characters had certain faults, weaknesses and …show more content…

Throughout the whole book, Lombard displays a high level of confidence in himself and his abilities but his confidence also turns to arrogance. In chapter 7, Lombard, Blore and Armstrong suspect that a murderer is hiding on the island and decide to go hunting after him. Armstrong warns them that “”He will be dangerous.” Phil Lombard laughed. The “Dangerous” – What is it? Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf? I’ll be dangerous if I get a hold of him!””(page 119). Though Lombard has experience in dangerous situations, it was foolish of him to disregard a person who had already successfully murdered two people. Although this book was based in 1939, Lombard extremely underestimated the woman at the cost of his life. One of these women in particular, Vera Claythorne, came back to bite him in the back, or the chest, with a bullet. Those still alive on the island were trying to figure out who the murderer was when Lombard threw out, “”At any rate, I suppose you will leave the woman out of it’’” (page 152). 30% of the people on the island were women, eliminating all of them is ignorant and extremely presumptuous. This led to Lombard’s death because he dismissed Vera as a weak, incapable woman. His assumptions got the best of him on pages 264-265 “She had moved a yard or two away and was facing him, revolver in hand. Automatically Vera pressed the trigger. Philip Lombard was dead- shot through the heart”. …show more content…

Vera experienced flashbacks throughout the story, birthed from regrets of her past actions. On pages 86-89, she has her first flashback, which explains the back story behind the murder the gramophone accused her of. In 1935, Vera was in love with a man named Hugo. Hugo had taken in his nephew Cyril, whom Vera was a governess for. Vera allowed Cryil to drown under her care, so Hugo would inherit Cryil’s fortune. The money was left to Hugo, but he saw the truth in Vera's actions and left her. She experienced multiple flashbacks recalling that event. Regret clouds her mind and makes her weak and unstable. Vera’s other problem is her extreme paranoia, on pages 246-248, she goes off on how mad their situation is and how they are trapped in a zoo. She is frantic and very scrambled. Another example of her paranoia is at the very end of her time on Soldier Island when she walked into her room and hung herself. Vera’s paranoia got the best of her. She thought she was safe and the last one on the island, but then she saw the noose and thought it was from Hugo. Vera’s weak mind and paranoia tipped her over the edge of insanity and caused her to hang
