Introduction: Daniel "Day" Altan Wing - Day was born in the slums of the Republic. He is a criminal and is recognized for Metias's murder. He is trying to run away from the Republic trying not to get caught. Scored a perfect 1500 on his Trial. June Iparis - June is a prodigy who is in love with Day. Her parents died in a car crash and was taken into custody by Metias, who is the victim of his own murder case, caused by Day. Also scored a perfect 1500 on her trial. Setting - Los Angeles, California, Republic of America. The United States of America is now the Republic of America and the book takes place in future-day Los Angeles. June is notified and tries to track him down, having a motive as Day has killed her only family. Undercover as a homeless person, she befriends a boy, which coincidentally is Day. Climax: June discovers Day's identity and immediately calls the government as Day is trying to support his family. Other than taking Day into custody, Day's mother is killed and both his brothers, John and Eden are also taken into custody. June starts to feel regret and pity as she sees Day devastated and sad. This causes the government convincing her that Day is a criminal and needs to be punished and the starting of an inner conflict with herself. Falling Action: As June goes through Metias's diaries and researches on the murder, she finds out that Day didn't kill her brother, as Thomas, Metias's friend, did. June then decides to go back to Day trying to help him and his brothers to escape before their execution day. The process of planning, letting Day know, and getting help from others. As they do the plan as followed, things go wrong as Eden cannot be saved and John is executed as the government thought it was Day.
The main characters, Day and June have no reason to cross paths, until the day June's brother, Metias, is killed. Day becomes the most suspected killer. While Day is trying to make sure his family survives, June wants to kill whoever ended her brother,Metias's, death. As the story unravels its dizzying twist and turns, the two realize the reason they came together in the first place.

Conner’s mother was ore worried about her high priced clothing and lavish life rather than her son and his mental health. Conner struggled with feeling excepted from women since his mom wasn’t too worried about him. At a young age he was molested by a baby sitter then when he was older he had a girlfriend who was his teacher twice his age. Anne Moody grew up in the south as a sharecropper on a plantation in the postwar south that still had Jim Crow controlling what the black population was able to do and what they couldn’t do. The Moody family was poor and was trying to make a living working for a white farmer. They and the other black plantation workers lived in a tiny two bed shack without electricity and plumbing, while the Carter’s house had both. Anne’s childhood was very difficult when her father decided to leave the family and have an affair with another black women. After this happened Anne, her mother, and her siblings moved around a lot while Anne’s mother, Toosweet, look for work. Eventually working as a waitress and as a maid for white families. Even while the family is struggling Anne continues to do well in school and decides to start working part-time as well to help put food on the table for the family. She was only in fourth grade. Some of white families that she worked for even encouraged her to continue her studies as she got to high school, while others were extreme racists and accused her and her brother of doing things that they didn’t do. As time went on Anne’s mother meets Raymond Davis and start a relationship with each other and Anne starts to enjoy her new life, but starts to get into several conflicts with her mother.
Once the half-term holidays have ended, a new girl, Lauren arrives to the school and all the boys, including Joe, have their eyes on her. Soon Joe and Lauren become best friends. Until Joe comes home one day and finds out that his Dad is holding a massive party. This only upsets him a little, due to his father not spending any time with him. Sapphire then shares that she had seen Lauren on TV before. Soon enough Joe found out that his father had decided to pay Lauren, in order for he to befriend Joe. Joe then decides to run away from home.

If I’d been in her place, would I have done anything differently?”Maria Lu p. 230. This quote shows the ways that Day has grown because of his experience while he was with June. At First , he felt anger while he was June because she betrayed him. However, after making an effort to empathize with her he comes to understand why she treated him the way she did. He also begins to see what he has common with the girl he believes is his enemy. Near the end of the book June finally understand why Day means so much to her and how she can’t let him go, he reminds her of her brother.

The next day June is moved out of college and is sent on a mission to go and catch Day even though they still don't know what he looks like she's going to try to find him. June tries to catch day by telling people to tell him that she has medicine to give him if they meet up. Day knows it a trick but he goes to meet up with her anyway to see if he can get information about where the medicine is stored. June and Day meet up in an ally but their not face to face cause they are both hiding but they talk and then Day run away after he realizes that he not going to learn anything.
