Essay Comparing The Alchemist And The Philosopher's Stone

The two books that I read over the summer were The Alchemist and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. These books are similar in many ways, one of these similarities is that both characters in the novel value relationships. In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, this is shown when Harry stands up to Draco to help Neville get his Remembrall back (Rowling 42). This shows that Harry would do anything for his friends. Another example of this would be when Harry and Ron go after the Troll that is trying to hurt Hermione: “There are some things you can't share without ending up liking each other and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them” (Rowling 42). This shows us how Harry would even risk his life for a friend even …show more content…

In The Alchemist the old man tells Santiago that “Everyone on earth has a treasure that awaits him” (Coelho137). This tells the reader that author believes that everyone has a treasure on earth that everyone must go and find. That being said I don’t think that treasure has to be a physical treasure but rather could be something like an experience or a relationship. This can also be seen through Santiago’s conversation with the gypsy women as she tells him that every person only has one obligation in life and that is for each person to fulfill their destiny (Coelho 22). In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, this can be seen when Professor Dumbledore tells McGonagall that Harry was destined to save the world from Voldemort (Rowling 15). This can also be seen through Harry’s conversation with Ollivander when he tells Harry that he was destined to have his wand as its brother belonged to Voldemort (Rowling 67). These examples both show that Harry is destined to play an important role in saving the world from Voldemort These are just two reasons why The Alchemist and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone are
