Why are people so opposed to legalizing marijuana? People understand that it is a drug that can be dangerous, but it can also do a lot of good for some people medically. So why are people arguing about the legalization of it? People against the legalization say that marijuana “distorts people’s perceptions and causes an artificial sense of pleasure or satisfaction that can become addictive,” (Wright and Newton), it can make chaos for a person who is trying to enjoy all the good things in life, and because banning marijuana can help protect people from the dangers of drug intake. But there is good in legalizing marijuana says a lot of critics and researchers. Hence legalizing marijuana could help cancer patients with nausea from chemotherapy; …show more content…
Marijuana is a mild intoxicant. Marijuana is not harmful if taken in complete moderation, as for alcohol and tobacco which are legal, regulated intoxicants, and the “state levels demonstrate that our citizenry is starting to recognize that marijuana is no more dangerous to society than legal drugs such as alcohol or tobacco. There are activists who “suggest that marijuana use is not that much different from the use of tobacco face an increasingly shaky argument.” (Newton and Wright) In order for a drug to be scheduled as a 1, the drug has to meet the following, the drug or substance must have a high potential for abuse, it must have no recognized legitimate medical application, and it must be deemed unsafe when used without medical supervision. To some people marijuana might fall under their belief that it is a schedule 1 drug, but activists have shown that it has many medical beliefs. So why are people so opposed to the legalization of marijuana? There are many reasons why it should be legalized. One it’s no worse than tobacco or alcohol, it helps cancer patients with their nausea from chemotherapy, and it doesn’t have all the requirements to be classified as a scheduled 1
Each year the United States government documents drug related deaths in our country, breaking the deaths down into categories of cause. These categories include tobacco, alcohol, prescription medications, illegal drug, and of course marijuana related deaths. Every year the number of deaths coming from marijuana is equivalent to zero. So why is there even controversy over the issue of legalization? Obviously, there are still some people out there who believe the drug is a topic for concern in our nation. In recent years, there has been tremendous progress being made in the field of medicine. University hospitals around the country have been proving again and again that the drug poses no threat to human health and well being, even
First and foremost, majority of society is uneducated and unaware of the many benefits legal marijuana can bring about. These benefits are for us as individuals, for our economy, and for our government as a whole. You can have thoughts and opinions, criticize ones who use marijuana, say that they are a drug attics or bad people, but you would clearly be uneducated having said that. The plant, cannabis, “marijuana”, has a class of
People think that medical marijuana is too dangerous to be used. “Although medical marijuana has been smoked widely in western countries for more than four decades there has been no reports of lung cancer or emphysema attributed to marijuana, but really can impact cancer patients” ( Lester Grinspoon). When anyone puts something into their lungs it is gonna have a negative impact on their health, but there has been no reports of people getting lung cancer from using medical marijuana. When someone who has been struggling to get through treatments of cancer or back problems, people try to use medical marijuana instead of using the pharmaceuticals that are prescribed by their doctor. The major go to is medical marijuana and it is because of the impacts it has on you while dealing with cancer, or back problems it is not just something that people use for no reason, don't get me wrong people do abuse medical marijuana, but that is with everything, people abuse everything. Medical marijuana has taken down the number of painkiller
The fact that cannabis is still illegal in forty-eight states is insane. Cigarettes, alcohol, and fast food kill hundreds of people every year and those are legal? I mean one- third of all AIDS cases in the US have been caused by syringe sharing (counterpunch). Study after study has shown that Marijuana is way less harmful than tobacco and alcohol (factslides). Cannabis has not even been directly linked to a death due to overdose, car accident, or cancer ever (Huffington). These are many reasons why many people support marijuana legalization and one of those reasons is because of the medical benefits. A drug that does not have severe side effects or could possibly kill you. Drugs like Cocaine, Heroine, Alcohol, Cigarettes. Those are the real drugs. Not Marijuana.
For many years there have been many people and organizations that do not want marijuana legalized, and there are also a lot of people and organizations that do want to legalize marijuana. It is has been shown by research that this is a drug, but also has benefits to help with health issues. The plant has been a called a miracle herb, which can help people lose weight, regulate and prevent diabetes, fight cancer, help depression, treat autism, regulate seizers and other benefits (Whitley, 2015) . However, these facts have not stopped many people being against marijuana usage.
People agree and disagree with the legalization for many different reasons, and personal viewpoints. Per the article, “Supporters of legalizing marijuana argue that the ban on the drug has proven ineffective, expensive, and unjust” (Marijuana). It is basically a waste of time and resources that could be focused on something with higher importance, that causes a bigger threat. Those that are for the legalization of marijuana also compare it to tobacco and alcohol. They mention how it could be taxed and used to fund drug treatment and awareness programs. Comparing it to tobacco and alcohol is what the people who are against the legalization do as well, but they use that comparison in a different way. They feel like this advertisement that would come with the legalization of weed could give youth the wrong idea, and corrupt them. They also say it would be hard to regulate and would run into similar problems, such as the ones that they have with underage drinking, if marijuana was so easily accessible. The two sides are in a war between themselves, and only time will tell if one side will change their
When people think of drugs, they think Marijuana, also known as Cannabis. The thought of Cannabis being legal scares a handful of people with claims that it's a deadly drug and making it legal will only worsen the consumption amongst citizens. These are typical claims or concerns from someone who doesn't have a deep knowledge on the subject. There are the handful of people who give cannabis a bad perception, by misusing it or using it as an excuse to justify their wrongdoings. And then of course there are those who utilize it for a practical reason such as treating an illness. Although people think cannabis is a dangerous substance, it should be legalized because it can be useful to society.
Marijuana is a hot, controversial topic often heard of in the media. Whether the anchors talk about a drug bust or the drug wars going on in Mexico, there is no doubt marijuana is in the mind of thousands of people. Some cultures use the plant in traditional practices. Smoking the plant was a popular thing in the sixties when hippies protested for peace, love, and being one with oneself. There are other instances where hemp is used in making cleaning products. Some people use the drug for medical purposes. Depending on the generation of people who bring up the topic their side on being for or against legalization is usually based on information handed down by someone else opposed to knowing facts. Unless a person has dealt with the subject at hand personally, one should not pass judgment. Being a marijuana user does not make anyone more of a bad person as going to church does not make anyone inherently more of a saint. Legalizing marijuana, a plant used for both medical and recreational purposes, can bring an abundant amount of positive attributes to benefit our country.
It should seem odd to most that a plant with so many resources is also classified as a Schedule 1 drug. Drugs are classified within five different categories that are based on the drugs acceptable medical use and its potential for abuse or dependency (www.justice.gov). The official DEA website defines Schedule 1 drugs as, “The most dangerous class of drugs with a high potential for abuse and potentially severe psychological and/or physical dependence (www.justice.gov).” Schedule 2 drugs are defined as, “Drugs with a high potential for abuse, less abuse potential than Schedule I drugs, with use potentially leading to severe psychological or physical dependence. These drugs are also considered dangerous (www.justice.gov)” Schedule 2 drugs include substances such as: cocaine, methamphetamine, methadone, hydromorphone (Dilaudid), meperidine (Demerol), oxycodone (OxyContin), fentanyl, Dexedrine, Adderall, and Ritalin (www.justice.gov).
Marijuana is known to most people in society, and those people that are aware of marijuana do not have a depth of knowledge of the history or the effects of marijuana Generations before us would use Marijuana for ropes because of the strength is was capable of but now people that hear the word marijuana would probably go straight with the idea that marijuana is useless and would not do the society or the economy any good. If the government were to legalize the use of marijuana then they would make extra profit off it because of taxes and other problems could be resolved like better school environments, updated technology in the school system or to just help our body out. These opinions that the people say out into society are not entirely
Marijuana is an addictive substance that many people get affected by. Many people know the negative effects of marijuana but they still continue to smoke weed. The government should not legalize marijuana because it would cause a lot of harm to the user and if they legalize it, more people would start smoking weed. Marijuana affects their education, causes health problems, and it also increases the chance of being schizophrenic. Marijuana should not be legalized resulting in a better lifestyle.
We have all heard it over and over again, listening to everyone go on about how its wrong and its not healthy, but honestly people would not act they way they do if they cared what everyone else thought. This pertains especially to those of you who smoke marijuana. If marijuana users actually cared what everyone else thought, they would not be using it, even though it is illegal marijuana is one of the most attainable illegal substances out there. If marijuana is so attainable, and so many people like to indulge in using it then why has it been so hard to get it legalized? Marijuana can be extremely beneficial in several ways. Medical marijuana has many uses, its helped in easing pain, side effects of chemotherapy, and it can also
A common misconception about the word “drug” is people think it means an illegal substance that can cause someone to act in an irrational manner. In reality a drug is simply something that someone puts into their body that has some kind of physiological effect; therefore, everything from Advil to cocaine is a drug. Most drugs that are legal in the United States are for medicinal purposes, like Tylenol or Ibuprofen. A nationwide exception to this would be tobacco, which is legally used by people over the age eighteen. One drug that has caused a rift in the continuity of twenty different states in addition to the capital of the United States of America is marijuana. One state that initially made marijuana legal for medicinal purposes, but
Growing up I was always told that drugs are bad for you, and when you start growing up you don't really understand the reason behind it, but in the end you still end up listening to your elders. Growing up I knew that people still did drugs even though it's illegal. With that being said I didn't understand why people would go against the law and consume it, and the drug I'm referring it to is marijuana. Nowadays it's all around us, life in the media, TV, movies, music, and even in public. Coming from a personal experience, I've always wonder why it's not legal? Because in my opinion the affect aren't bad and you can use it for medical purposes. In allot. The debate do legalize marijuana in the U.S has been fought ever since the drug existed.
Those for the legalization are screaming for freedom from prosecution of using or possessing a substance that’s been less harmful than tobacco or alcohol. On the other side, the naysayers are trying to prevent the drug from diluting the presently deteriorating academic success of our nations school aged children. One thing can be agreed upon though, while marijuana may be good for those who choose to use it medicinally and are extremely ill, as long as the ones who are in most danger from its adverse effects should be well protected from a preventable
