Erwin Rommel was born on Nov. 15, 1891 in Heidenheim, Germany. His father was a teacher and his mother was the daughter of a senior official. He wanted to study engineering and find a career with the Zeppelin Company but his father didn’t want that for him. In 1910 Rommel joined the German infantry and fought as a lieutenant in WWI and chose to remain there until the end of the war. In 1938 he was appointed commandant of the officers school in Wiener Neustadt which is near Vienna.
