The state of the relationship between the United States and Latin American during the era of independence was one in which the regions were feeling each other out trying to figure out how to deal with one another, much like the way boxers feel each other out in the first round of a boxing match. However, both regions did have a mutual interest in seeing the end of European colonialism in the Western hemisphere, although the United States was probably more concerned about the potential return of European influence in North America (i.e. the British) because of its infant status as a nation which left it vulnerable to possible re-colonization.
