In the first chapter of the book, when reminiscing upon his African childhood, Equiano had claimed that he had never heard of the white man or Europeans before. It wouldn't be until his kidnapping and forced slavery that he actually encountered the people and their customs. Equiano had called them "ignorant" in their manners towards the other Africans and a selected few of themselves; he had wondered how these people had descended from Africa due to their prejudice to its own people. Even by acknowledging how strange his own customs were back in his village, Equiano couldn't help see Europe's customs to be just as strange, or even more so when he saw them.
