The novella, Anthem by Ayn Rand, Is written in the first person point of view. Although the reader may be tricked due to the fact that the author commonly uses words such as, we, were, and our. In the first chapter of the novel, Equality 7-2521, the main character, says “Our name is Equality 7-2521, as it is written on the iron bracelet which all men wear on their left wrists with their names upon it” (6). Equality 7-2521 is not talking about a group of people when he says “our name”, he is only talking about himself. Yet, the society which he lives in (a post, Dark Age version of the world) does not allow him to use the word “I” along with the word “ego”, unless he wants to be punished by death. Throughout the story she supported Equality 7-2521, and all the things that were different about him. This is something that people obviously should not have been doing, because that would not be thinking about everyone. She talked to Equality while she was getting water in the fields, and began to grow a stronger connection with him every day. Equality 7-2521 also for the first time admits that he is nervous when he sees The Golden One. He says” We stood still; for the first time did we know fear, and then pain. And we stood still that we might not spill this pain more precious than pleasure” (24). This shoes that from the first time he saw The Golden One he had a strong physical connection to her. This gave the reader a hint to believe that emotional connection may surface with the Golden one later in the novella. Equality 7-2521 even grows to love The Golden One. He says, “For men are forbidden to take notice of women, and women are forbidden to take notice of men. But we think of one among women they whose name is Liberty 5-3000 (The Golden One), and we think of no others” (23). This is very important to the plot of the book, because The Golden one is starting to make Equality 7-2521 think of her in a way that is not equal to others. This could have been one of the reasons he ran away too. He felt that he needed to love and if his society did not condone that, then he would need to go somewhere that did.
