In the book Anthem, Equality 7-2521 risks his life just so he can find himself individually. The society that he lives in is a society where all men do the same job and are forbidden to have their own thoughts. Equality 7-2521 is a guy that is fascinated with the phenomena of nature and can’t help but wonder what power of the sky causes lightning and how it can be harnessed to human benefit. When Equality 7-2521 discovered a tunnel in an uncharted forest, he secretly started to perform scientific experiments that led to the creation of electricity. He knows that he is taking risks by showing the World Council of Scholars his invention, but he thinks that his invention could change the world for the better.

In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand the main character, Equality, lives in a collectivist society, but he leaves because he does not agree with these values. Anthem is a prime example of the hero's journey because the novel is very similar to what criteria the hero's journey contains. This essay consists of how the Equality experiences the Apotheosis, Master of Two Worlds, and the Ultimate Boon.

Equality 7-2521 was born into a society that portrays a totalitarian rule. The people living in the controlled environment have been taught and brainwashed to know only one thing: the priority of the group over the individual person. Equality 7-2521 is one of the few people raised in the world of collectivism that is born different – filled with curiosity, gifted with intelligence; the difference leads him to believe he is cursed and evil. He was thought that it was bad to be different but he did not care, he just wanted to show other citizens that there was more than what meets the eyes. Not only is equality an individualized thinker but he is also smart and brave. Equality makes a statement in his society by creating light and sharing the new invention with others. “We MADE IT. WE CREATED IT. We brought it forth from the night of the ages. We alone. Our hands. Our minds. Ours alone and only. We knew not what we are saying. Our head is reeling. We look upon the light which we have made” ( Rand 59). This shows that Equality made a new invention and is eventually going to show it to the council of scholars. This affects society because the council of scholars thinks that Equality is being superior to his brother. “We have much to say to a wretch who have broken all the laws and who boast of their infamy! How dared you think that your mind held greater wisdom than the minds of your brothers? And if the council had decreed that you should be a street sweeper, how dared you think that you could be of greater use to men than in sweeping the streets?” (Rand 71). This proves that no one, besides Equality wants to change society. This ties to the theme by trying to break out of the controlling society and leading into Equality standing up for individualism and for himself. In addition this concludes how the two short stories “Anthem” and “Harrison Bergeron” have different themes.

All success starts with inner motivation. The most talented people that are living have an inner motivation that started their success story. The book “Anthem,” by Ayn Rand portrays the character  Equality's  main motivation which is individuality. Through his fearless discoveries he finally realizes the truth and that truth will set him free.

Equality is motivated by himself. He wants to invent things. He’s not doing it for fame or to try to impress the council, but for himself. He’s eager to discover and he’s curious about things and how they work. He is very passionate about his experiments and puts a lot of pride and work into them. Equality is much smarter than the rest of his society as it states “It was that the learning was too easy”(21). He dreamed of being a scholar where he can put his talents to a good use;

In the short story of Anthem, Equality lives in a world where everything he does is supposed to benefit his brothers. He is only supposed to think about them and everything he does is supposed to be about his brothers. Although throughout the course of the story, there are many lessons to be learned, however the most important lesson of all is to be your own person. The following quote: “To be free, a man must be free of his brothers” exemplifies a theme of Anthem. But, Equality finds that hard in the world he lives in. But with the help of his brains and “The Golden One”, he will finally understand what it means to be truly free.

If you are born with a gift in that society, you are limited to your full capability, so you will be like everyone else. However, in today’s society, being more intelligent and having a gift is praised and is rewarded. In the text it said, “ George while his intelligence was way above normal, had a little mental handicap in his ear.” This proves that George, while being above average, is punished and his gift is hidden so he will not be above anyone else in this “equal” society. It can also show that being tall or more visually appealing will be punished so you are equivalent to everyone else and that striving for total equality is not as beneficial as it might

“Change is certain. Progress is not.”, in the so-called perfect society, there is no progress and they are yet to develop, although, there are some people who defy these odds and develop into different people (Carr). The main character, Equality, has many obstacles to overcome but has yet to discover who he truly is. Although, as the story goes on, he starts to discover new things about himself, his purpose, and starts to realize he is not a part of this “perfect society”. The word “I” makes one an individual, however in Anthem, the word “I” is lost and there is no individual, just the collective people working for a common goal. Equality is set on a journey to find out who he truly is while

From the beginning of the book you can tell the punishments of being different are not tolerated. Equality on page 18 expresses: “we stole the candle from the Home of the Street Sweepers. We shall be sentenced to ten years in the Palace of Corrective Detention if it is to be discovered.” This shows that Equality if following what is expected from him and not talking about himself committing a crime

In The Novel Anthem The character equality’s sense of mortality at the end of the novel differed from his society’s institutions, practices, and officials.The choices and actions that determine the purpose and the course of his life,alter gravely throughout the text .From the very beginning to the very end, the audience can easily depict a change in the character’s mental,as well as mortality.In the very beginning Equality was full of curiosity,he could spot his indifference to the others,he also knew he could not think of himself as an individual.Everything done,would have to be done for the good of his “brothers.”He automatically questioned authority,and had a hard time conforming to society.

He (Equality 7-2521) is different from the rest of the people in society. He knows and at first regrets his sins and by the end of the book he has a whole new perspective of what he does. Equality at first was ashamed of being different. Equality feels that because, “We are six feet tall, and this is a burden, for there are not many men who are six feet tall. Ever have the Teachers and the Leaders pointed to us and frowned and said: ‘There is evil in your bones, Equality 7-2521, for your body has grown beyond the bodies of your brothers.’”

Living through this society, Equality is quite unfamiliar with the concept of individuality. Initially, Equality lives denying any hint of individuality coming to light just as others in the society do. With that mentality Equality pleads,

From a young age, Equality-72521 stands out from his brothers. Not only does he express too much interest in science and discovery, but he’s also taller than most men, which further influences the treatment he receives from others. “Ever have the Teachers and the Leaders… said ‘There is evil in your bones… for your body has grown beyond the bodies of your brothers.’” (Rand 18) This quote depicts Equality-72521 being scolded because of his height. Though he cannot change the way he grows, it is treated as a character defect nonetheless. Despite the unfairness about his treatment, he feels guilty.
