Equality 7-2521 And Anthem Comparison

Decent Essays

“Anthem” is an engrossing novel by Ayn Rand focusing on the character Equality 7-2521’s descent into rebellion against the new socialistic government that has taken all previous scientific advancement out of life, only to leave the ideology of collectivism. His quest to discover, learn, and invent is problematic for those that oversee the progress of the civilization, and from roughly around the age of five, he is punished for his nature. Soon enough, the twenty-one year old is on a journey to learn, not only about nature’s mysteries, but also about what sets him apart from his dead-eyed peers. Equality 7-2521 has many distinctive characteristics that others in the restricted city do not, some of which are relatable, and others that are indeed …show more content…

Perhaps the two share an inquisitive, self-aware, and independent personality. Similar to Equality 7-2521, the other has felt the burning desire to want to know all that there is to know about how the planet works since she was a small and curious, yet slightly annoying, child. The line: “…questions give us no rest. We know not why our curse makes us seek we know not what, ever and ever. But we cannot resist it” is a close resemblance to the thoughts that ran through my own. Equality 7-2521 also gives the impression of being rather self-absorbed, which is not necessarily a negative feature when all one has ever known is “we” and not “I.” In the novel, Rand expresses Equality 7-2521’s struggle to realize his own importance as an individual through many different points in the novel, particularly once he comes across what he feels gives him purpose, such as his adoration for science and his partner, who he calls “The Golden One.” When the possibility of losing either one surfaces, he begins to deny what he previously knew and instead firmly believes in putting himself before anybody he deems unworthy of his time. In the line “I am done with the monster of ‘We,’ the word of serfdom, of plunder, of misery, falsehood and shame,” it is clear to see that Equality 7-2521 is now conscious of …show more content…

Aside from his ingenious and brash nature, he is also inventive and intrepid. Throughout the novel, he is in search of answers for the immeasurable amount of questions he possesses and methods in which to solve such burning inquiries. Through his research in his secluded tunnel, he has come across many discoveries, one being the previously vanished ability to harness electricity; nevertheless, he still thirsts for more. In fact, he claims: “We have learned things which are not in the scripts. We have solved secrets of which the Scholars have no knowledge. We have come to see how great is the unexplored, and many life-times will not bring us to the end of our quest.” Just as such accomplishments require intellect, they also require the nerve to break away from all that one has ever known. Equality 7-2521 jeopardized what minute freedom he had and even his own life many times just to be able to experiment. He was practically caught once before he escaped, and was lashed into a state of unconsciousness for refusing to voice what he had been up to. To defy all that one’s life was built around requires a large amount of gall, which many do not
