Equality 7-2521 is the protagonist of the story he is twenty-one years old, scientific research is what gives meaning and joy to his life. He will not abandon it though he knows the severity of the punishment that awaits him if he's caught. He refuses to surrender the electric light to the authorities when he realizes that they will destroy it. Liberty 5-3000 is Equality’s long lost lover, and she looks up to him. Her spirit is shown in her actions as well as in her appearance. Liberty 5-3000 breaks the laws of her society to pursue her dreams. She sees Equality 7-2521 and often thinks of him even though the state bans a woman to become interested in another man except when it's time for marriage. One night Equality stayed out too late in in his tunnel, he refused to tell the authorities his whereabouts, and he was sent to prison. Equality finally escaped prison to show his invention to the Council. When he and his invention was turned down they threatened him so he ran into the woods to live by his own rules. He soon realized the “Golden One” was falling him.
Since his work was not the collective work of him and his brothers, the work he has done is evil, and is not good for the society. Equality 7-2521 also presented his papers, that he has written, as his confession, documenting the work that he has done, along with the sins, and transgressions he had committed. After Equality 7-2521 presented his light box, the World Council of Scholars tried to destroy it, however, when they, the World Council of Scholars, tried to destroy his work, Equality 7-2521 jumped out of the window and ran into the Uncharted Forest. This was the first encounter Equality 7-2521 had in which he was prideful of his work.Upon leaving the society in which he had lived his life, Equality 7-2521 experienced his first sense of freedom, when he killed and ate food that he earned himself. This was Equality 7-2521’s second time he felt prideful over the work he has
Equality 7-2521 creates the electric light by himself, in an underground tunnel, where the “Circle of light lay on the stone before[them].” And also his actions of bringing forth the light “from the night of ages” suggests his wider role to his society (Rand 43). He adopts his role in a higher figurative sense as well. He swears that he will be the one who will spread hope and
“We strive to be like all our brother men, for all men must be alike… We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great we, one, indivisible and forever.” (Rand Chapter 1.1 (??)) The Council of Vocations assigns Equality 7-2521 the job of Street Sweeper purely out of sinister motivation. Equality 7-2521 exemplifies the qualities of an independent young man, a concept that the council is against. They believe that all individuals should be the same, and that the differences that set them apart must be relinquished, or it will tear their society apart.
In Anthem by Ayn Rand Equality 7-2521 transitioned through stage of his life with his talents. Equality transitioned from being a typical street sweeper to Prometheus, a free man, escaped from society. Throughout his rite of passage, Equality put his talents to work and invented electricity with the litebulb. This discovery pushes him into a complete rebellion as the World Council threatens to destroy the lightbulb. Because he will not abide seeing the light bulb destroyed, even though he might tolerate his own destruction, he is forced into exile from his society. Equality had broken from his society and finally became free. Equality 7-2521 discarded his given name, which shows his frustration with his society, and his unwillingness to be held back by his
In the story Anthem by “Ayn Rand”, the character “Equality 7-25-21” becomes an excellent example of a dynamic character. As he discovers hidden inventions of the past, he challenges the beliefs of the Society. At first, Equality agrees with Society’s rules. As the story progresses, however, he starts questioning Society’s rules, a particular turning point being when he discovers electricity. By the time he writes his last entry, his views are completely opposite than at the beginning.
“It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see. It is base and evil” (17). Equality 7-2521 was born into a society that portrays a totalitarian rule. The people living in the controlled environment have been taught and brainwashed to know only one thing: the priority of the group over the individual person. Equality 7-2521 is one of the few people raised in the world of collectivism that is born different – filled with curiosity, gifted with intelligence; the difference leads him to believe he is cursed and evil. He was ashamed of his unique qualities and believed that he was a flaw. It is this divergence that makes him believe there is an initial
As he moves forward in his measures in the underground tunnel, Equality 7-2521 uncovers light in the glass box. For the first time, he is not afraid of his misbehavior against society, the box of light mattered, his findings is critical; he is important, and for the first time, Equality 7-2521 feels happiness. Nevertheless, the World Council of Scholars does not feel the same, “How dared you, Gutter Cleaner to hold yourself as one alone and with thoughts of the one and not of the many?” (Rand 72). As Equality 7-2521 perceives these words, he makes his most valuable discovery, successful community is not one of collectivism, but individuality. As he makes this analysis, Equality 7-2521 discontinues from the allegiance and is frightened as he runs to the Uncharted Forest, but as the days go on he turns into being unfearful, for he can do as he chooses when he wants. Soon Liberty 5-3000 meets him and the two go on to getting a house together. When Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000 find their house, and the books, he starts to interpret about Prometheus, who brings light when there is
This quote represents the individuality in the book. This was the first time Equality has experienced freedom. It is the first time he refers to himself as “I” instead of “We”. At the beginning of the book it was discussed “the unspeakable word” which it was now discovered it is “I”. This quote goes against everything the council and his “ brothers” believe in and everything he used to believe.
In this book the council, which is another way of saying the government, has a law known as the “we” law. This law states that no human can refer to themselves as one person. Each and every person must call themselfs “we” and considering the circumstances, “our” as if they are multiple people. The council feels as if they must have this rule because if these humans were to go around talking as if they are one person, it would be unequal. Which is a huge law, they must all be equal, no exceptions. One character acknowledges, “We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever.” (Rand 19). This quote is a strong quote
Unfortunately, he has no existing technology to use as a base for his ideas, so creates his own. “We, Equality 7-2521, have discovered a new power of nature. And we have discovered it alone, and we alone are to know it,” (34). Equality has lived in a world where the candle is the peak of societal technology, and he is only now realizing that there is more. By going off on his own and discovering things for himself, as an individual, Equality has come to incredible conclusions.
By giving the members of this society no freedom, there is no room for conflict or violence. Also, this type of civilization would most likely stay completely organized, because all members are assigned a job that benefits the community. The individuals living in this dystopia are only living to serve the State, and there is no other purpose in life. The men and women living here are brainwashed and have not yet realized that there is so much more to life. It seems as if everyone relives the same day over and over again, completely unaware that they are being restricted from amazing life opportunities.
In addition, Equality 7-2521 continues to develop the theme when he is curious about how to capture lightning. This is when Equality 7-2521 creates a box that contains the energy of the sky which is known to a reader as a light bulb. He does this by discovering how to capture lightning and creating light without it. Equality 7-2521 plans on showing it to the World Council of Scholars and becoming a hero to the society like the people that created the candle were. However, his actions are considered a
