World War I is probably the greatest mistake the world has ever made in history, costing the lives of millions of people. It all started with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary when he was visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina in the city of Sarajevo. Franz and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were riding around Sarajevo in their car when a bomb was thrown at the vehicle. The driver accelerated when he saw the flying object, and the bomb exploded underneath the wheel of the next car, injuring two of its occupants along with a dozen spectators. On the route back to the palace, the archduke’s driver took a wrong turn into a side street, where nationalist Gavrilo Princip of Serbia was waiting. As the car backed up, Princip approached and fired his gun, striking Sophie in the abdomen and the archduke in the …show more content…
These were important because they meant that some countries had no option but to declare war if one of their allies declared war first. Here’s are the entangled alliances: 1879, The Dual Alliance - Germany and Austria-Hungary made an alliance to protect themselves from Russia. 1881, Austro-Serbian Alliance - Austria-Hungary made an alliance with Serbia to stop Russia gaining control of Serbia. 1882, The Triple Alliance - Germany and Austria-Hungary made an alliance with Italy to stop Italy form taking sides with Russia. 1894, Franco-Russian Alliance - Russia formed an alliance with France to protect herself against Germany and Austria-Hungary. 1904, Entente Cordiale - This was an agreement, but not a formal alliance, between France and Britain. 1907, Anglo-Russian Entente - This was an agreement between Britain and Russia. 1907, Triple Entente - This was made between Russia, France, and Britain to counter the increasing threat from Germany. 1914, Triple Entente (no separate peace) - Britain, Russia, and France agreed not to sign for peace
During World War I, alliances were very important. Like in any other war alliances are needed to survive. The world war I had Britain, France, Russia, Italy and the united states as one ally, they fought against the central powers which include Bulgaria, Germany, Austria Hungary, and Ottoman Empire. The war was started because of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. In June 1914, a Serbian-nationalist terrorist group called the Black Hand sent groups to assassinate the Archduke.
World War I, otherwise known as the Great War, started in 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and lasted until 1918, forever changing the map of Europe and ending the lives of nearly 8 million young European men. The congress of Vienna had successfully created an atmosphere of peace that lasted for 100 years, however in the years leading up to 1915, rising tensions among European powers would create a “powder keg” that required only the slightest event to set off a world war. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand provided the spark need to destabilize Europe and send the nations of Europe into the first modern war, although conflict had been stirring for the past 50 years. In the end, systems of alliances, imperialism,
Many contributions lead to the spark of World War I. The three main causes included the assassination of Francis Ferdinand, alliance systems, and militarism. Although imperialism and nationalism are said to be contributing factors to the cause of World War I, the assassination of Francis Ferdinand, alliance systems, and militarism were three of the most important causes of The Great War. An immediate cause of World War I was the assassination of Austria-Hungary’s archduke, Francis Ferdinand.
World War I was known as the “war to end all wars,” and led to mass devastation throughout Europe. The four years of war all started with tension forming between Austria-Hungary and Serbia. After taking over Bosnia and Herzegovina, two regions Serbia wanted, Serbia vowed to take them away while Austria-Hungary vowed to destroy any effort made. Soon after, the nationalistic Black Hand who wanted to rid Bosnia of the Austrian control, shot Austria’s heir, Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Afterwards, Austria wanted to punish Serbia and declared war on them. The assassination seemed to be what sparked the war, but rather there were much greater causes hidden beneath the surface. Instead, the underlying causes of World War I was
These treaties meant that if one nation was attacked, its allied countries were bound to defend and aid them. Before World War I, the following alliances were already in existence: Russia and Serbia, Germany and Austria-Hungary, France and Russia, Britain and France and Belgium, and Japan and Britain. This meant that when the immediate cause of
World War I was one of the goriest wars the world has experienced, with a total mortality count of about 17 million people. The assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand was believed to have triggered the war when a Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip shot him and his wife in the capital of Bosnia on June 28, 1914. A month later the emperor of Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia and it wasn't long before France, Russia, Germany and Britain joined the war, turning what should have been a war between two countries into a total war. This caused a widespread war between the Allied and the Central Powers. The war was fought mostly in Europe, Middle East, and North Africa from 1914 through 1918. The most compelling cause of the Great
What began as an assassination of a single individual, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, led to one of the greatest despairs in all of history. Known throughout the world as The Great War or World War I, this global war ignited battles throughout the entire world where the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire fought against the Allied Powers which included several countries including Britain and the United States. Lasting for four treacherous years, the war led to the deaths of millions of people. From mere citizens trying hard to live their life safely and away from all the violence, to brave soldiers who stood up to fight for their countries, people living all around the world had hardly had any any nice memories of days that had just passed by or hope for the coming times.
Despite being one of the largest and most detrimental wars in Europe’s history, World War I was started by the action of one single person. In June of 1914, the Archduke of Austria- Hungary was assassinated by a Serbian assassin while visiting Serbia. After this, there was tension when Serbia refused to Austria- Hungary apologize for the killing of their Archduke. This continued to escalate until Austria- Hungary declared war on Serbia. Following this, war broke out between countries all around Europe, leading to World War I. Although, the war would not have grown as large as it did if it weren’t for a few factors that allowed the spark of the assassination of the Archduke of Austria- Hungary- Hungary to ignite an entire fire. Many countries
On June 28th, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated; his death would be the spark that ignited World War I. Spanning over the course of four years, World War I, due to new military technologies and the horrors of trench warfare, saw unprecedented levels of carnage and destruction. Soldiers in the trenches were surrounded by “inhumanity and depravity”; they could not escape the overwhelming boredom, the desire to kill, and the constant threat of disease and shellfire (Slade 1583). The war claimed the lives of more than 16 million people, and those who survived beyond the battlefield were forever altered.
The alliances in the war were called the triple alliance, seeing as pretty much each alliance had 3 countries involved, this meant they had their military, financial, and political support. During the end of the war, some alliances were made and shifted but in the beginning there were 3. When Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Germany obviously felt the need to join in on the fun. With everyone declaring war on each other, everything was kind of chaotic. Alliances can be both good or bad.
Throughout history there has been many conflicts between groups of people that have threatened peace in many nations and regions. One of these conflicts was world war 1 which involved many countries that sided with one another against each other. There were many causes to this conflict that started all the fighting between the nations. Each country has their own view on who's fault it was and if it was handled correctly. This war only caused many casualties and economic problems for countries which could of easily been avoided.
World War I, also known as the First World War, the Great War and the War to End All Wars, was a global military conflict which took place primarily in Europe from 1914 to 1918.[2] Over 40 million casualties resulted, including approximately 20 million military and civilian deaths.[3] Over 60 million European soldiers were mobilized from 1914 1918.[4] The immediate cause of the war was the June 28, 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, by Gavril Principe, a Bosnian Serb citizen of Austria-Hungary and member of the Black Hand. The retaliation by Austria-Hungary against Serbia activated a series of alliances that set off a chain reaction of war declarations. Within a month, much of Europe was
World War I was a great loss both physically and emotionally. It was a conflict between the Allies and the Central Powers from 1914 to 1918. More than 15 million people were killed in battled, making it one of the most deadly conflicts in history. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria- Hungary was seen as the trigger of the war. The war was described as a world war, a total war, and a modern war. A world war because it involved the whole world. A total war because people used maximum resources for the purpose of the war. A modern war because the people used technological and industrial mobilization.
Alliances were formed with the European countries formed partnerships to protect each other. There were two different alliances, one was the Triple Alliance was between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. Then there was the Triple Entente was and alliance between France, United Kingdom, Russia. In the midst of all the war the nations that remained Neutral were Spain, Portugal, Greece, Serbia, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Romania, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire, and Montenegro (Doc. D). In document E it states that France and Russia have both equal desires to preserve peace, and only want to make sure that they meet the needs for a defensive war. Then in Document G shows a comic of how the different Allies had “ganged up” on Germany and Austria, then there was Italy that had been
Throughout history there has been competition for resources and domination. This competition has led to conflicts that have caused destruction, social disruptions and death. World War I was no exception to this competition. World War I was known as the war to end all wars and was caused by a combination of factors. Some causes of World War I was nationalism, imperialism, militarism, and the main cause which was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princip of Serbia. While the United States attempted to remain neutral and stay out of the war, Germany choose actions that gave the U.S. no choice but to enter and help their Allies defeat the other powers.
