Everyone has their own characteristics that set them apart. The way they act, think, and feel gives them their own individual personality. But what if you could learn exactly what type of person you are? That is what intrigued me when I heard about the Enneagram system. I have taken personality quizzes before, but none were as accurate as the Enneagram. By taking this quiz, I learned more about myself than I realized I knew. The largest components of this questionnaire are the center, wings, and arrows. One’s personality is more complex than it seems. I fully agree with this quote and believe the personality type five describes me to a T. Fives are a part of the thinking center, also known as the head center. As a five, I overanalyze what I am going to do. A big aspect of being a five is to get out of my head and go with the flow. I need to value being present and active. Instead of thinking about what I should do, I need to go out and do it. Another thing fives need to work on is taking risks and speaking up. I am generally a very quiet and conservative person. I weigh out the pros and cons to every situation before coming to a conclusion. Although I like people and am a very friendly individual, I come off as standoffish. I struggle with opening up to others if I don’t know them. The wings of a five are four and six. I consider myself a loyal, anxious, and cautious individual. These are characteristics of the six wing that blend over into the five. However, if I had more of a four wing I would be empathetic and self-absorbed. With a stronger six wing, I am more interested in sciences and subjects where thinking is involved. The arrows of a five are seven and eight. Fives suddenly become hyperactive and scattered at seven when they are stressed. Sevens contain characteristics that are drastically different than a five. To better understand the biological and genetic factors that affect personality one must consider how prominent researchers define personality. According to Joshua Wilt and William Revelle (2015), personality is “the coherent pattern of affect, cognition, and desires (goals) as they lead to behavior” (p. 479). Correspondingly, the most prevalent personality framework is the “Big Five,” or the five-factor model of personality developed by McCrae and Costa who specifically assume that traits are biologically based, inherent tendencies that persistently influence thoughts, feelings, and behaviors throughout life (Broderick, & Blewitt, 2015). The five traits are as follows: (1) Extraversion which has the characteristics of being outgoing, enthusiastic, active, talkative, and assertive. (2) Agreeableness which has the characteristics of being warm, forgiving, sympathetic, kind, affectionate, generous, and compliant. (3) Conscientiousness which has the characteristics of being organized, reliable, careful, responsible, self-controlled, and efficient. (4) Neuroticism which has the characteristics of being tense, sensitive, moody, anxious, self-pitying, and self-conscious. (5) Openness to Experience which has the characteristics of being insightful, imaginative, artistic, curious, having wide-ranging interests, and a positive orientation to learning.

However this convergence of perspectives is actually productive in that all perspectives by themselves have their disadvantages as well as their advantages. Upon completion of The Big Five Personality Test I was able to reconfirm key components of my personality. For instance, the ability to open up an experience new events with minimal hesitation. Next, a military mindset helps to promote a strong work ethic with an abundance of attention to detail. Thirdly, enthusiasm makes it easy to thrive in any social environment. Additionally, amicability helps with considering other’s emotional needs during regular interactions. Finally, stability aids with maintaining a high level of relaxation during times of unease. Now, that these five personality traits have been discussed, let’s move onward.

People often use the acronym, OCEAN to represent each personality (“The Big Five Personality Traits,” 2016). In definition, personality means characteristics or traits that are different from other people. The Big Five dimensions of personality help identify the personality of the person as whom we are that separates us from other people based on characteristics, thoughts, behaviours, and traits. Personality is important for our lives and for our environment in which we live in.
