Ender Wiggin was unlike most of the children in his school. He was known as a "third", the third child in his family. He, like both his brother and sister, had a monitor in the back of his neck, so the military could see what they did. Ender had his longer than his siblings and because of this, Peter, his brother, hated him. He constantly threatened him and picked on him and at school, the kids verbally harassed him. He got so fed up with it that one day, he beat up the main bully, not stopping until he was lying on the floor, weeping and in his own blood. Ender didn't want to do it but in his mind, it needed to be done. Valentine, his sister, loved him, despite everyone else's opinions. She was constantly sticking up for him and …show more content…
She agreed because she wanted to have a positive impact on the current situation in the world. By the age of 9, Ender was a platoon leader whom everyone respected and the majority of his practices were attended by several different people. Soon after a short time of depression, Ender became the Commander of another army. There he was teamed up with mainly newer students. Every challenge that his army faced, despite the obstacles and odds being against them, they won. He defeated an opponent, Bonzo who didn't take it well, so he tried to attack Ender in the shower. Ender attacked back and won, after that incident he was moved from Battle school to Command …show more content…
He was trained by this individual, Mazer, running him through different courses so Ender would get the general understanding of what buggers are really like. He learned that they are like overgrown insects that were charged by their queen, similar to bees. Ender continued to excel and win all of his simulated battles, only to later find out that they were real battles and that his teachers led him to believe they were a game, so that way he wouldn't think of all the lives being killed. The next planet that Ender traveled to, he realized that the buggers had prepared for his arrival; they somehow looked into his mind and knew that they would be defeated by him. He got into the Queens mind and saw that the buggers didn't want to fight and were extremely devastated from all the events that occurred. Learning how the buggers really felt about all of the fighting, Ender, instead of fighting them more, decided to help
He learned that the buggers never meant to start to war with the humans and the whole thing was a misunderstanding. One example of when the theme was shown was in the quote where Ender said, “In battle I killed ten billion buggers…who had not even launched a third attack against us, and no one thinks to call it a crime” (Card 309). Ender regretted killing the buggers, but made up for it by letting the new bugger queen live and revive the species.
After Ender’s important battle, they tell him that all of it was real and that he had actually defeated the buggers. Ender thinks to himself, “Real. Not a game. Ender’s mind was too tired to cope with it all. They weren’t just points of light in the air, they were real ships that he had fought with and real ships he had destroyed. And a real world that he had blasted into oblivion. He walked through the crowd, dodging their congratulations, ignoring their hands, their words, their rejoicing” (Card 297). When Ender realizes that they have been lying to him and using him as a weapon, he becomes angry. Ender yells at Graff and Mazer, “‘ I didn’t want to kill them all. I didn’t want to kill anybody! I’m not a killer! You didn’t want me, you bastards, you wanted Peter, but you made me do it, you tricked me into it!’” (Card 297). If Ender would have known that he would have killed people and creatures, he would not have gone to battle school in the first place. Death is very hard on Ender and he does not know how he can live with such a burden. Ender’s change in character is due to him being a victim of
In the beginning of the book Ender gets his monitor removed and gets into a fight. The way he handled the fight is what caused colonel Graff to offer Ender to join battle school. In the start of battle school, Ender got picked on a lot, until he killed Bonzo, he was promoted to commander, commanding his own army, he defeated a lot of other armies in the school. In the commanding part of the book, he was getting stressed and losing sleep, he went back to Earth because he didn’t want to be in battle school anymore, then his sister convinced him to go to Eros to train for the bugger war, when he was playing simulations of a bugger invasion, he finally defeated the buggers and Graff told him that the games were actually real, not simulators. After he beat the buggers, another war started on Earth, his sister met with him where he was and told him that he should be governor at another planet and went around to find a new planet for a new era for the buggers.
He believed the game simulation was run unfairly by Mazer, and to Ender, this was the perfect chance to show his worth in front of the Command School authorities as they were watching him from behind. Ultimately, whether the school had planned it or not, Ender had found motivation in wanted to prove he had autonomy as a result of the way he had been treated like a tool earlier in his
As he overcame students, Battle School, the Mind Game, and many more challenges throughout his life, he continued to change his strategies and even his personality in order to endure his situation. His extreme change becomes apparent when Bean says, “Even though there are some better soldiers than you in Dragon Army— Not many, but some— there’s nobody who can think smarter or faster than you. ”(198). Here, we see how Ender’s fellow students begin recognize his abilities, despite that other students underestimated him in the beginning. The time Ender spent in isolation is finally starting to pay off, and he’s becoming a much better commander as a
Have you ever been so angry that you could kill? Maybe not, but that is normal for a character in Ender’s Game. Peter, Ender’s older brother makes many actions that can be explained by resenting Ender, being mad at his parents, and upset with himself and his sister, Valentine. In the book, the main character Ender is recruited to be trained to help fight a battle against the Buggers, who have attacked Earth twice.
Ender believes that he is a brutal person and sees his actions as nothing but pure destruction. He is ashamed of his inability to control his actions and believes that deep down he wants to cause pain of that immensity; his belief convinces himself that there is no hope for him. Above all, the overwhelming guilt Ender experiences causes him to struggle with believing that he possesses his
Ender does not want to be Peter, who was a cold-hearted killer. Ender was beginning to understand the buggers and find out their reasoning behind the war, but before he could fully understand, the I.F. made him defeat the buggers without even knowing. It also made Ender upset when he found out that he not only just killed one queen, he killed an entire colony and world of queens. Another situation that also upset Ender was when Ender killed Bonzo. Ender didn’t mean to hurt him, but he had to, for self-defense. “’Why should I want to beat anybody?’ Ender pressed his palms against his eyes. ‘I hurt Bonzo really bad today, Bean. I really hurt him… I knocked him out standing up. It was like he was dead, standing there. And I kept hurting him… I just wanted to make sure he never hurt me again’” (222). Although Ender disliked Bonzo, Ender loved him because when he truly understands his opponent to defeat them, he also cared for them. This not only disconcerted him, it made Ender despise the
And because of Ender’s compassion, he is able to defeat the buggers. He understands them and knows how they feel, so that when he kills them, he feels terrible and wishes that he wasn’t manipulated and that he did not just kill an entire race. Ender also shows his compassionate side when he decides that he will help the buggers. When Ender finds the last pupa egg and telecommunicates with the queen bugger, he replies, “I’ll go from world to world until I find a time and place where you can come away in safety” (Card 321). He realizes that the buggers did not know that humans were a thinking race during the First Invasion, which was when the buggers attacked the humans. And when they realized their mistake, they hoped that the humans would forgive them. But when the humans do not forgive them and attack during the Third Invasion, which is led by Ender, the buggers know that their race is going to die. And because the buggers know that Ender would listen to them and understand them, they are confident in his willingness to help. So when the queen bugger asks Ender to save their race, he agrees to help find a home for
In the first chapters of the book, Ender encounters a group of bullies set on fighting him and ends up killing the leader of the group, beating him into the ground so he won’t return to fight the same
Ender was a very strong individual and did not conform, he fought through the hard times even when everyone else doubted him. It is unnecessary to push people over their limit for one’s own desire or wellbeing. Sometimes Ender was pushed too hard by the teachers, and when he finally hit his limit he stopped trying, because he was tired of conforming. Ender thought, “I don’t care anymore... You can keep your game.
Ender Wiggin was a timid boy who wanted to have his brother and parents to love him. Prior to joining the Battle School, Ender did not have the belligerence that he would soon possess. He did not want to be like Peter, so
Ender’s brother and sister had a very big influence on Ender, if it weren’t for them being so smart the International Fleet wouldn’t have authorized Ender’s birth and if it weren’t for Peter he wouldn’t have known how to cry silently and Valentine helped him cope with Peter while also teaching him how to love and helping him when he visits Earth right before going to Command School.
Ender was determined to find a new home for the buggers because he didn’t want anyone else to get hurt. For example, it says, “Your children are the monsters of our nightmares now. If I awoke you, we would only kill you again” (Card 320). Ender knew that reviving the buggers would only lead to another war because the humans would still not understand the buggers intentions. Additionally, Ender knew that the buggers had their own lives to live and wanted to convey this to the humans. He was able to prevent more bloodshed while also educating the humans on everything he knew about the buggers by writing a novel, on everything from their faults to their intentions, as the speaker of the dead. Specifically the novel says, “‘I’ll go from world to world until I find a time and a place where you can come awake in safety. And I’ll tell your story to my people, so that perhaps in time they can forgive you, too.” (Card 321). Ender decided to spend the rest of his life dedicated to the buggers to enlighten people on the reality of the genocide they forced him to commit. This helped him explain to the human kind how wrong it was to commit genocide against the
The society surrounding Ender was hostile and volatile. This is shown in the very beginning of the book when Ender is playing with
