Have you ever lost a family member or someone very close to you? Think about how that has affected your family and how that has made your life different and the mourning and reminiscing you have had. Well the main characters in Mockingbird have, and the thing they need to find are closure and empathy. In the story Caitlin’s brother Devon has passed away in a school shooting. This has greatly affected Caitlin; one reason this has affected her so much is because she has aspergers, so she doesn’t quite get the hang of things. With her Asperger's, Caitlin gets made fun of at her school by people that just don’t understand, She loves to read dictionaries because they are in black and white. That it is world, black and white. One day, Caitlin was …show more content…
What she means by saying this is she is wondering if she actually has a friend. She questioned this when a boy from first grade started to hang out and talk to Caitlin at recess. The boy’s name was Michael, his mom had also passed away in the same shooting as Caitlin’s brother, Devon. So the two of them kind of went together and understood one another. The good thing is that Michael doesn’t judge Caitlin, they get along perfectly. The author uses a thoughtshot to emphasize Caitlin's situation, she seemed very surprised to think about having a friend. Since she has Asperger's, it is very difficult for Caitlin to find a friend or the right people to hang out with. So I think the author used a thoughtshot to explain exactly how Caitlin felt in this situation. Caitlin and her father miss Devon, just like her friend Michael. Therefore, they need to find closure to help with the loss of their family. This relates with the theme of this story because Cailin doesn’t have many friends, and Michael helps Cailin a lot with finding closure, and he also needs to find closure. Michael did eventually cause a problem with Cailin but she overcame it and helped her succeed in finding
"Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another and feeling with the heart of another. " - Alfred Adler. It's important to be empathetic but their are risks associated with it. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee explores this in many situations and examples.
1) Atticus is an empathetic person who tries to make sure people are treated equally, and in the case of his children, that people should grow up and make a positive difference. Atticus shows his empathy by telling Scout to try to understand what Miss Caroline is going through. Harper Lee is trying to show that with empathy, everyone benefits, and there would be less hate and injustice. Atticus says, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee 39). Atticus is telling Scout to look at the world through Miss Caroline’s eyes, to see why Miss Caroline reacts the way that she does. Atticus believes that if Scout can see how scared Miss Caroline is, with teaching a new school in a new way, then Scout can understand what makes Miss Caroline act the way that she does. When Scout asks Atticus why he is angering the town by defending Tom Robinson, he says that he must, or else he would no longer be reputable. Atticus says, “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win.” (Lee 101) Atticus leads by example, and that if he did not hold himself to the same standard that he wants Scout and Jem to be at, then he is no better than the rest of the town. He knows that he is going to lose, but wants to show his children that it is important to do the right thing no matter the consequences or result, and

Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.”(33)
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee used point of view, conflict, and characterization to create a sense of empathy in the reader. Point of view was used to create empathy by portraying the main characters as young children who see things through a simple mindset, as a result they have an acute sense of justice and fairness. For example on page 212, it says “ “It ain’t right,” he muttered… “I don’t know, but they did it... they’ll do it again and when they do it...

In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, racism, empathy, and perspective are quite important to the story. In the novel, Tom Robinson got convicted of rape, all because of the color of his skin. The Jury provided no perspective towards Tom’s situation. When Francis called Atticus, a “nigger-lover” which is racist, Scout fought back, and Uncle Francis didn’t give perspective to Scout.
