Emily Dickinson was an eccentric poet that was reclusive and published very few poems in her lifetime. Because I could not stop for Death is about a man taking a woman towards her tombstone where she died. I heard a fly buzz – when I died is a short poem about someone dying and being peace about it, when a disturbing fly enters and ruins her soothing passage into the other world. My life closed twice before its close is a narration of someone who has been through two traumatic events before death and it afraid of a third. Death is the only escape. These three poems all share her common themes of death and the afterlife. They also have a string of grammatical errors. People did not stray away from educated sophistication and explored topics that are not acceptable in society, like death. This idea is romanticism. Because I could not stop for Death, I heard a fly buzz – when I died, and My life closed twice before its close are three poems from Emily Dickinson where she explores her interest in romanticism. “Because I could not stop for Death— He kindly stopped for me— The Carriage held but just Ourselves—” from Because I could not stop for Death, “With Blue—uncertain stumbling Buzz—Between the light—and me—” from I heard a fly buzz – when I died, and “My life closed twice before its close— It yet remains to see” from My life closed twice before its close are three quotes that show Dickinson’s romanticism. Her syntax here is very informal. Instead of following the set standards of grammar, she follows her own rules of individuality; a huge characteristic of romanticism. Instead of punctuation that should happen after each stanza or sentence, she uses dashes. She also uses colloquialism, or informalities, that don’t usually occur. Her capitalization has no pattern. This is what makes her poems her unique, however, and shows her freedom as an individual. These are all components of romanticism.
