Entertainment in the Elizabethan Era There were many different forms of entertainment and entertainers during the Elizabethan Era, or Shakespearean Age. Most well endowed families in the Elizabethan Era were able to do a lot more in order to entertain themselves. This is especially because they are not busy with the hard work and tasks that lower classes have to handle on a daily basis. According to Dylan Shore, the elite class enjoyed themselves by throwing large feasts, jousts, and banquets. The jousts that were thrown consisted of a competition with two opponents who fought on horses with lances. Jousting was a very popular sport during this era, especially for the elite. Banquets were thrown with five courses, each course being reasonably large and filling (“Entertainment in the Elizabethan Era”). Because the elite class had access to more, as stated in a BBC article, “...the invention of the printing press and spread of education meant that gentlemen were part of an elitist culture involved in intellectual pursuits, such as reading the classics, studying music, hunting, and hawking.” (“Life in Elizabethan England”). They also danced and listened to music, which was a form of entertainment that lower classes also engaged in (“Entertainment in the Elizabethan Era”). Plays have mainly been replaced by movies, jesters have been replaced by modern day colorful clowns, balls made out of pig and sheep bladders for bowling have become balls made out of polyurethane. Entertainment is something that is very important to people from all around.
