What do you think of when you hear the word heroism? Is it a person becoming a hero or the acts they do which may lead to another act making them seem like a hero? Elizabeth Proctor is considered heroic in the Crucible because she is able to keep her composure even through some scary circumstances. Elizabeth Proctor is considered heroic in the Crucible because she is able to keep her composure even through some scary circumstances.
Throughout the story Elizabeth was seen as a cold person but she was also a very loving person towards the end. After she found out that John had cheated on her with Abby she said,” You’ll tear it free - when you come to know that I will be your only wife, or no wife at all! She has an arrow in you yet, John Proctor, and you know it well!(62)” Here she was giving him a chance to either go to Abby or stay with her. She even lies to the court in order to try to save John. “…Is your husband a lecher! Elizabeth, faintly: No, sir.” He court asked if he had cheated on her and she denied it. There she expresses her great love for John even though he cheated.

Elizabeth may be compared to someone you see in the military because of her ability to keep a confident composure. She says, “Elizabeth, with a smile, to keep her dignity: John, if it were not Abigail that you must go to hurt, would you falter now? I think not.(54)” She is standing up to John who is angry. She is able to keep her confident composure she has the audacity to accuse him of being ashamed. “Elizabeth, Conceding: I think you be somewhat ashamed, far I am there, and she so close.(62)” Elizabeth’s is strong composure help her when questioning John, even when he is yelling she does not back
Her husband only wants her to find complete forgiveness in her heart and to put the incident behind her. Elizabeth’s pride is illustrated when she would not confess that John Proctor had an affair with Abigail. This is described in the quote, “Elizabeth: ‘Your Honor, I-in that time I were sick. And I- My husband is a good and righteous man’ Danforth: ‘Look at me! To your own knowledge, has John Proctor ever committed the crime of lechery? Answer my question! Is your husband a lecher!’ Elizabeth: ‘No, sir.’ This quote demonstrates that Elizabeth has too much pride to bring shame upon her family. Her pride is unjustifiable because she instead of telling the truth, Elizabeth lies to Danforth, therefore condemning both herself and her husband. John John would rather be put to death than ruin his reputation and integrity in himself, “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life!
“Whatever you do, it is a good man who does it.” This quote was said by Elizabeth Proctor, a character in The Crucible. Here Elizabeth is saying that her husband is a good man which shows that she has finally forgiven him for the affair he had earlier in the play. Elizabeth Proctor is a good Christian woman who is very honest. She is married to John Proctor but keeps a cold house ever since John had the affair with Abigail Williams. Elizabeth is accused of witchcraft when Abigail is stabbed in the stomach and they then find a poppet with a needle in it belonging to Elizabeth. I consider myself to have similar characteristics with Elizabeth Proctor because we are both caring, forgiving, and honest.
Goody Proctor, also known as Elizabeth Proctor, is the wife of John Proctor. Abigail Williams accused Goody Proctor of witchcraft. Abigail Williams was found with a needle in her stomach the same place where a needle was stuck in a poppet, in the belly. When she first heard she was accused of witchcraft it was like she already knew she would be accused "She wants me dead. I knew all week it would come to this!"
In the play ‘The Crucible’ Arthur Miller creates the characters as having static and dynamic characteristics. Two main dynamic characters in the play are Elizabeth Proctor and John Proctor.
I think Elizabeth Proctor is the most faithful character in the Crucible, she has proven on many occasional times that she is faithful to her husband. I can give you three examples on how faithful she really is to Mr Proctor. The first reason on why I believe Elizabeth Proctor is the most faithful character in the Crucible is because, when Mr. Proctor was having an affair with Abigail she knew about it from the beginning, but she didn’t say anything, but eventually she kicked her out. Then when they were in court she testified and said that her husband was loyal to her and never committed adultery.
She even said, “it needs a cold wife to prompt lechery”, (Miller 137). around the end of the play. One reason she distrusts John, is that he has claimed he was not alone with her. He later says that he was, in fact, alone with her for a short while. It takes a person of strength to be able to take that lie he gave and still control herself in the manner a wife should do. It was her inner strength that showed her that “it were a cold house she kept”(Miller 136). and needed to fix that problem.
Firstly, Elizabeth Proctor is a foil to Abigail Williams because they are both women that are in love with John Proctor. However, Elizabeth differs from Abigail because she is kind, merciful, and honest, as opposed to Abigail who is unforgiving, jealous, and a liar. Arthur Miller portrays Elizabeth as a character that never does anything wrong, and that “she has never lied” (Pg. 116).
[The common room of the proctors home on a dark night. The curtain rises. On the right of the stage appears the kitchen. On the left, a door opening leading to the fields outside. In the middle a burning fireplace, two pieces of wood inside burning, next to it five wood logs. Abigail prepares dinner for the Proctors. Elizabeth enters from the stairs leading to the bedroom with a sense of frigidness that can be seen in her body language, however, keeping her posture elegant and simple. She is not quite pleased, she reaches to the cupboard, takes a pinch of salt, and drops it into the pot.]
In the play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, John Proctor fits the classic Greek definition of a tragic hero. Aristotle, one of the great Greek philosophers, teachers and writers, stated that one of the most important aspects of a tragedy was the tragic hero. He defined a tragic hero as a noble person that goes from a state of fortune and happiness to a state of utter misery. The character’s tragic flaw causes this change. Aristotle stated that witnessing the downfall of the character triggered an emotional release, which left the audience feeling relieved because they have empathized with the character, but not upset because the downfall was the character’s
Elizabeth still questions John’s loyalty throughout the play. Elizabeth comes off as an outspoken women and that isn’t really supported in the Puritan society. When convicted of witchcraft she doesn’t fight with the men because she knows she hasn’t done anything wrong. Even though she tries to do what she thinks is the best for John, she ends up saying the wrong thing and Abigail isn’t punished. Elizabeth ends up being pregnant and the trials end before she has her baby so she survives.
Abigail calls Elizabeth “a cold, sniveling woman” in a rage of jealousy towards John and Elizabeth’s marriage. Abigail’s name-calling gives insight to what kind of woman Elizabeth is, who is cold and bitter, in comparison to Abigail who is hotheaded and wild, in order to convince John to divorce Elizabeth and marry her instead. John knows that Elizabeth has been cold and distant lately but he believes it is because of her illness and his deceit and not because this was naturally how she was. Later on in the play, we find out that Elizabeth doubted herself and this was why she was closed off in their relationship because she did not think anyone could truly love her if she could not love

Elizabeth is also strong and courageous. When John is accused of witchcraft, Elizabeth is willing to follow along with the decision John decides about whether he wants to confess or not. She knows if he confesses he will be living a lie and if he tells the truth, he will be put to death. Although the decision John makes will affect Elizabeth and she wants John alive, she is courageous towards John by showing her support and love. Elizabeth knows she must put her opinions to the side and John must construct this decision on his own. Elizabeth states, “I cannot judge you, John, I cannot” (Miller). Elizabeth is also strong because she was falsely accused by Abigail and
Since the times of the ancient Greeks, tragic heroes have been used to enhance the meaning of a play or literary work. Any character cannot be described as tragic hero. Several key characteristics are necessary for the tragic hero to possess in order to be characterized as such. He must be high-ranked or have a high standing in the community. He must have a weakness or a tragic flaw and be involved in a struggle. In the end, that struggle will lead to his downfall. Arthur Miller purposely incorporates these characteristics into John Proctor, one of the main figures in The Crucible. He masterfully portrays Proctor as a tragic hero even though he is a common man.
Elizabeth was a loving person, always showing tenderness and care to those she knew. It’s impossible to count the ways that she showed her love to her family and friends, and it’s impossible to write all the stories of the caring, loving, and strength she displayed. It’s mesmerizing how Elizabeth handled every situation at the best of her ability every single day.
