Imagine it’s 1603, in early April. The queen has just died, and she has left no heir. It is eventually decided that King James VI of Scotland will rule England next. Elizabeth was a strong, courageous leader; she was precocious, learned in many languages. She brought stability to her kingdom. However, she also grew from a troubled childhood. Who was this strong queen who managed to leave no heir?
Elizabeth I (known simply as "Elizabeth" until the accession of Elizabeth II; 7 September 1533 – 24 March 1603) was queen regnant of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death. Sometimes called "The Virgin Queen", "Gloriana" or "Good Queen Bess", Elizabeth was the fifth and last monarch of the Tudor dynasty. The daughter of Henry VIII, she was born a princess, but her mother, Anne Boleyn, was executed two and a half years after her birth.[1]
“A plot to overthrow Queen Elizabeth fails!” That is a headline someone like Robert Devereux would not want to hear or see, for he was the instigator of the plot to overthrow the Queen. What were Robert’s reasons, however, and how did the plot fail? From the beginning, Robert Devereux, the second Earl of Essex, came to the attention of Queen Elizabeth in 1580, becoming one of her many favorites, just like his step father, the Earl of Leicester, was when he was still alive (Royal Museums Greenwich, 1.) Devereux, who eventually would be referred to as Essex, was thirty years younger than Queen Elizabeth and was headstrong, reckless, foolish, and often times disobedient and impatient (Bryson, 128.)
He very quickly became a favorite of the Queen and in the year 1587 he was knighted and appointed the captain of the Queen’s Guards. Although, this changed after Queen Elizabeth’s discovery of Raleigh’s marriage to one of her maids of honor, Elizabeth Throgmorton. Queen Elizabeth grew very angry and jealous causing her to throw Raleigh into the Tower. Upon his release he attempted on an unsuccessful expedition to El Dorado to the fabled Golden Land in effort to try and get back in Queen Elizabeth’s favor. Sir Walter Raleigh played a very minor role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in the year of 1588. He formed the Devon militia and was a member of Elizabeth’s War Council but did not take part in the naval battle. As he returned to court, he made an enemy with Queen Elizabeth’s new favorite, Robert Devereux. Raleigh then left for Ireland, where he there cultivated his estates and developed the friendship with poet Edmund Spenser, who he later introduced to Queen Elizabeth in the year of 1590. Raleigh was forbidden access to the court so he devoted all his time studying and speculating about the universe and nature. He also helped Hakluyt in getting ready for his voyages, and joined Shakespeare and Ben Jonson at the Mermaid Tavern in London. By the end of the year 1594 Raleigh had gained enough of the Queens favor back that she gave Raleigh her consent for an expedition to Guiana. In his return he brought back many samples of ore and
During the sixteenth century there where many conflicts which occurred between Catholics and Protestants. The Kings and Queens of England especially kept on changing between both religions. This made it very difficult for the people of England to choose a religion because laws kept on getting changed in regard to practicing religion. When Elizabeth I became Queen she became the new defender of the faith, thus making Protestantism the official religion. One of the harshest parts of Elizabeth's reign was the whole Mary, Queen of Scots, ordeal. Mary was Elizabeth's cousin and next in line to the throne. Of course Mary was Catholic and that is what made the whole issue an issue. This paper will
To the best of my understanding Elizabeth I and later the English Monarchs with regard to religious uniformity, believed in, and were in search of a religious settlement that would bring peace for all the people. You could draw the conclusion that this very Act of Uniformity proclaimed by Elizabeth I in 1559 which was actually made up of two separate acts of Parliament, have in part created the religious freedoms we enjoy today. My thesis would be that this religious uniformity would shape a lot of things that would come to pass later on in life, as Elizabeth I ideas and beliefs would set a tone that would shape religion and the beliefs on how to worship that still go on this this current day. One of The act of Supremacy and the act of uniformity, the act of Supremacy re-established England’s independence from Rome, while the act of uniformity established a set form of worship and made church attendance on Sundays and holy days something that was obligatory. This very act would go on to shape some of the laws, and a lot of the thinking behind the way things are still done to this very day. Some of the laws are influence by the act of uniformity... In this time period different religious beliefs were being questioned and shaped, and the act of uniformity was designed to create order so that all the different religious groups could follow a unified religious belief. Elizabeth I ultimate goal was to create and build a stable, peaceful nation
Elizabeth I was England’s first successful Queen in all of its history. She used her status as a single woman to toy with possible suitors from all across Europe, such as rulers from Spain and France, keeping foreign countries trailing after her. Elizabeth was a tremendous leader who lead England on the path to prosperity, taking it out of the shadows of poverty. Many people doubted her ability to lead as she was a woman leading a country in a patriarchal age, and the last time a woman was the Queen, she was nicknamed ‘Bloody Mary’, for the amount of Protestants she killed. Elizabeth was also a Protestant, the same group her older sister was trying to rid England of, which created strife between the Catholics in her country and abroad and the Protestants. But, despite the strife, she managed to spark a ‘Golden Age’ in her country, known as the ‘Elizabethan Era’. Although Elizabeth did many exceptional things for her country, she was plagued with some hard choices during her reign, like imprisoning and later executing whom the Catholics believe was the rightful heir to the throne, Mary, Queen of Scots. This order tarnished her reputation with the Catholics even more. But despite her mistakes, Elizabeth was an impressive ruler for her time and made leaps and bounds for woman rulers in England.
She didn’t want Mary to create powerful alliances and overthrow her. She waited until the Queen of Scots was down to throw her some possibilities. It wasn’t until King Francis died that she made she moved, bringing up proposes that she hoped Mary would accept. Mary Stuart knew better of course, and moved on to marry Henry, Lord Darnley. He had descended from the Tudor family, which would strengthen Mary’s claim to the English throne.
In the late 1500’s the Spanish and the French had claimed a large portion of the New World, however the East Coast was left unclaimed. Therefore in 1584, Sir Walter Raleigh asked our Queen Elizabeth I if he could have the honor of setting sail to the New World and claim new territory for England. She then issued a charter allowing Raleigh to discover, search and find out about the alien terrain. Thus, Raleigh gathered approximately 100 men to Embark to the New World. When he first lands
