Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman doctor, applied to twenty-nine medical colleges before she was accepted. Elizabeth was accepted to Hobart and William Smith College on accident because the student body thought it was a joke from a rival school. Elizabeth didn’t let that or other obstacles stop her. She persevered even after she lost sight in one eye. Perseverance can show people how strong they actually are, and by persevering they often end up better off than if they would have given up. When people persevere it can show them how strong they can be. Some people are forced into situations where they have the choice of life or death. Kim Phuc is an example of someone in a situation where they must persevere to live. Kim had burns so

Anna can persevere through seeing people she was helping survive yesterday, die today. This is the biggest trait that is needed to survive as healthy as you can; doing what Anna does day by day. If Anna couldn’t push through what she does she would be stuck to dwell on the death of somebody she knew, and would be of no help to anybody else.

One example, is when Mattie wanted to give Nell away to the orphanage because it would be easier, she persevered and decided it would be better for Nell if Mattie kept her. This shows, that sometimes it might be harder to persevere, but its better in the long run. Another reason, is when Mattie was at the coffeehouse with Grandpa and they got robbed, she thought about just sitting there and letting them take all of their stuff, but she persevered and chases them away. This proves, that when you persevere you will get rewards, which in Mattie’s case was not getting robbed. As you can see, persevering is better, even though giving up is
Elizabeth Blackwell”). The woman credited with directing Blackwell toward medicine was one of her friends, who was sick and close to death. One day while visiting this woman, she told Elizabeth, “Why don’t you study medicine? My illness would have caused me much less pain, suffering, and embarrassment if I had been treated by a lady doctor” (Richard).

“Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and, above all, confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained”-Marie Curie. What does it mean to persevere?

For example, when Louie is captured by the Japanese and taken to a POW (Prisoner of War) camp where he among others if both physically and emotionally abused he keeps trying to survive. He knows from firsthand experience that if he perseveres it will get better. This is proven when Louie after experience in three different camps is ordered to hold a fifty pound beam of wood over his head for ten minutes (Hillenbrand 295). Even though Louis was sickly, weak and skinny he managed to do it without giving up. This once again portrays the theme to always persevere because without it Louie would be dead.
