Elements of Good and Evil in The Crucible by Arthur Miller

Throughout this movie and book, John Proctor and Reverend Hale have both made a big impact of the overall plot of this story. I believe that overall John proctor has been the tragic hero of this play despite his flaws. One of John proctor's strengths would probably be that he is a pretty good leader and he stands for what he believes in. He is very unselfish and wants the best for everyone. We know this because in the end of the act three, when everyone had ran into the water and mary accused him of being a devil's man, he willingly confessed to it so that none of the other girls, or his wife would be charged. That scene right there really shows that he is very unselfish and cares very much for his wife and the kids of Salem.

Certain characteristics of John Proctor's character and also the environment of the Puritanical Salem alleviated this problem for him. The main issues running through out the play are a series of dilemmas that John Proctor faces. The first and foremost of these is his guilt over his adulterous affair with Abigail Williams, the second his hesitation to testify against Abigail to bring out the truth and the third, his final decision to make the ultimate sacrifice.

The story begins in Salem, Massachusetts 1692 right in the middle of a period of witchcraft hysteria. During this time many people were accused of being witches and wrongly convicted by judges Danforth and Hathorne. The characters in the story are struggling because of a girl named Abigail who gets caught practicing witchcraft and then starts naming and accusing others so that she doesn’t get in trouble; one of these people being a well-respected farmer, John Proctor’s, wife Elizabeth. The title, The Crucible, refers to a test, trial, ordeal, formation by fire, and vessel baked to resist heat, and the entire story is an allegory meaning it has a hidden meaning. John Proctor symbolizes a crucible by embodying the definition of one, as he went through a test and was formed by fire.

Evil is a profoundly immoral and malevolent. Evil is shown all through the play, firstly through the Devil and then through the characters. The Devil is evil because it caused many crimes such as the multiple deaths of babies and so on. Marry Warren and others have been trying to catch the Devil and to stop all this absurd villainy, “The Devil is loose in Sale, Mr. Proctor, we must discover where he’s hiding.” Although he may seem that all this evil is coming from the Devil, yet it is also coming from Abigail Williams. “ You drank a charm to John Proctor’s wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor”, this shows that Abigail has the desire to have John Proctor and she is willing to act evil, like the Devil. This clearly shows that this selfish act of Abigail’s was her own act of evil, rather than the Devil’s. In the end, evil is not only the Devil to blame for all the wrongdoings in the play, but other characters also have the qualities of the Devil.

Tragic events brings out peoples fear and pity that leaves the readers hungry for justice, that’s when the hero comes in the story. The hero should be the most courageous and noble of the characters. He or she is the symbolic face of justice and honor. Proctors priorities are challenged when his wife is convicted of a crime she didn’t commit. He then so honorably goes to the court knowing that the only way to save his wife is to put his own life on the line. Aristotle says “A man cannot become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall” (qtd. in Barnes). Proctor is faced with many trials and tribulations in which he needs to overcome.

In the play, Miller reveals how people can go against their own morals, therefore they can protect themselves. In Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, he reveals to readers how fear escalated in Salem because of people's desire for personal gain.
