The element of infidelity is evident in the short story, “Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston. The reader is first introduced to the protagonist, Delia, who is a hardworking “wash-woman” that provides financial support for her family. Delia finds herself in an intolerable marriage. After being married for fifteen years to her husband, Sykes, she has lost all prospect. Sykes lacks the ability to love Delia and openly cheats on her. Hurston stating, “Just then Delia drove past on her way home, as Sykes was ordering magnificently for Bertha.
