4. The three Genres that share the elements of bodily excess are Pornography, Melodrama, and Horror. The use of bodily excess that enhances the emotion, violence, sex, and drama in these films aim to project these sensations and emotions onto the audience as well. One of the elements of bodily excess that the three genres of film possess are excessive bodily movements. In Pornography, the bodily movements are created to appeal sexually to the audience. In Melodrama, the excessive bodily movements allow a heightened sense of the importance or impact of the drama in the film, adding to the exaggeration of drama. For example, the more violent or out of control the protagonist is, the higher the level of drama. Horror films carry the same degree of bodily movements as melodrama where the characters are usually in constant motion running, fighting, killing, etc. where there are excessive and exhausting movements that increase as the horror heightens.
Sound is also a crucial aspect for these three genres of film when discussing bodily excess. In these three genres. The sensation of the body is portrayed by Horror’s shouts of terror and fear, Pornography’s sounds of pleasure and orgasm, and Melodrama’s sounds of crying and conflict.

The bodily excess of these three genres all center around women. They all sexualize the female protagonists in their films. Although they all focus on the woman’s emotions and body from head to toe, pornography and horror pay particular attention to the sexual implications that a woman’s moan, scream, body vibrations, facial expressions, and body movements may have. With the large variety of interests that flourish within the society, it is no shock that genres exist, especially in film, as the definition of entertainment differs from person to person. A genre is a category of films that are characterised by similarities in the narrative elements and conventions found within the films. Genres are extremely useful to both film producers and audiences as it helps them narrow down the target audience and search for films that are in their range of interests. No one wants to watch a political drama overrun with teenagers or go into a cinema with the intentions of watching a romantic comedy, only to receive blood and gore instead.

“Why We Crave Horror Movies” In Stephen King’s essay “Why We Crave Horror Movies,” King discusses how and why horror movies attract audiences with their gruesome characteristics. King starts off with saying that individuals are confronted with their own personal insanities such as abnormalities and excessive fears. To deal with these issues one faces their fear, king explains, through horror films to prove that he or she is not afraid. King then describes how one is reinforced with a sense of normality while viewing the atrocious sights in horror movies. Another reason to go see these films is for fun: a fun that comes from witnessing the downfall of others.

Genre is a French word meaning ‘type or ‘kind’ (Genre, 2016). The film industry has been around for at least 100 years. The evolution of entertainment is growing rapidly through the use of media. And as these years go on, films have begun to fit into specific genres, and are important to appeal to the different types of audiences. Films can be described to genre in different types of ways, such as stars, director and narrative to help identify what genre the film is (Neale, 1990, pg. 49).
