To be a good juror there are a few key elements I believe are required. One good key element to have while being a juror is to listen effectively and take very good notes. You want to be able to have a very clear understanding of the case and take notes if you later forget minor details and want to remember. A second, key element to have while being a juror is to ask good questions. Being able to ask good questions can open up a more clear understanding of the case. Lastly, you want to listen and use all the evidence presented in an effective manner. This is important because sometimes evidence used can be false, as seen in the movie 12 angry men. One of the ways I would contribute to being a good juror would be to listen effectively and take
For this essay I asked my Grandma Diane questions about jury duty. She has never served on a jury but she has been summonsed to questioning to possibly be on one. When she got the summons letter she wasn’t excited, “ I didn’t want to do it, because I didn’t feel that I [had] the right to judge anyone else,” and didn’t really want to go. She got asked questions like, “Could you be impartial? Could you be fair? If “this” happened would you say that the person is guilty? Are you related to the person/persons involved? Have you heard anything about the case?,” the attorneys asked these questions because they wanted to make sure they had a jury that would make an unbiased decision in the court case. My grandma said that, “It made [her] respect what
Although juror twelve was not one of the main characters in the arguments he was the peacekeeper during these times. He would use his cheesy advertising sayings to stop the arguments. A saying he used was “Put it on a bus and see if it gets off at Wall Street.”. If his sayings didn’t stop the arguments he would use a different strategy and say something like why don’t we vote on it. The example I found of him redirecting the argument he brought the conversation back to the facts. This is when juror nine and other jurors were arguing “Let’s not forget the women across the street. She looked out the open window and saw the boy stab his father. She saw it!”. This I found to be one of the greater examples of juror twelve being the peacekeeper
With an overwhelming amount of power, humanity becomes lost in the desire to control. In the novel Night by Elie Wiesel and the connection “A Spring Morning” by Ida Fink, both authors demonstrate a common theme of dehumanization by using literary devices such as: specific diction, symbolism and tone.
Author Seymour Wishman has a well-regarded background in the law system as he has practiced criminal law for both the defense and the prosecution during his career. Wishman’s purpose for writing this book is to educate the average American about the process of the jury system. Wishman also makes it a point show the average American the perception of being in a jury and how they perceive others. Many Americans have minimal knowledge of the United States legal system. Wishman seeks to educate the average American of how a jury works, what it is like to be in a jury, and more about the United States legal system.
The goal of the American Justice system is to remain unbiased. One way we can achieve unbiased justice is through the jury system. When you are selected for jury service, you must plead to only judge the case based on information presented in court. Judges also appoint jurors who have not formed or expressed opinions about the case (document f).
Juror number eight is the apparent leader of the jury. He confiscates opinions from everyone and modestly gives his feedback. Likewise, if there was one leadership quality that I had to describe as juror number eights best quality, it would be his ability to listen to everyone’s opinion and seem genuinely interested in what they have to say. This is a very important quality to have, and one that makes juror number eight such an effective leader. Members of a group must feel that their opinion matters, otherwise they might stop contributing to the discussion. Moreover, this can then hinder group activity and prevent the jury from reaching a verdict. Juror number eight looks each man in the eye when they are talking, letting them know he is listening.
Juror characteristics that would be beneficial to the defendant would be to have someone on the jury who is suffering from a mental disorder or have a loved one who is controlling it with medications. Someone who works in the field of mental illness would also be a plus for the defense. When you have someone, who works with people with mental disorders they tend to have a better understanding of what type of person or illness they are dealing with. The defense will be looking for people who can be unprejudiced about the law, and will not believe that the law always makes the right decision (Hullinger April 1, 2015).
While watching the movie, 12 Angry Men, I saw many of the different things we have been discussing in class. The jurors all took different roles throughout the movie. These different roles contributed to the communication the group had, the stages of development, and how they came up with a consensus.
The Constitution guarantees us a right to a trial by a jury in serious criminal hearings. The jury job is to weed out the facts by reviewing the evidence and deliberating on a verdict based on an agreement of three-fourths or five-sixths of the jurors (How Are Potential Jurors Selected, 2016), (How Courts Work, 2016).
To make a good juror, you would need someone who is not racist, sexist, or biased, because it would make our Criminal Justice System a lot more fair.
Yes, on race (mixture), gender (mixture), similar in back ground to you and have people from your general area. Age not necessarily because anyone can be selected to be a juror that has a driver license and registered to vote. Having this mixture should make a “fair” jury that is guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.
The end of the trial brought along a trail of horrid events. First, after being found guilty by the Jury, Tom attempts to escape from Maycomb County Jail as a way of taking matters into his own hands. Unfortunately, he was unsuccessful due to his severed arm slowing him down and was shot dead. Next, Bob Ewell openly spit on Atticus's’ face and threatened him and his family, which Scout found odd because after all he won the case. The truth of the matter was, the entire county knew why he won; he won because he was white and Tom was black, and not because he was right. This resulted his reputation going further into the dirt, which he did not take a liking to, and thus wanted to hurt Atticus back, for “making him look like a fool”. However,
The functions of jury consultants are to assist the lawyers in the jurors selection process. Due to the fact that preemptory challenges are limited, the jury consultants help discover bias of potential jurors. In addition, they also provide the necessary criteria
The efficiency of service can be looked at form multiple angles. Does the motive behind service less than its effectiveness? I will be exploring just that in this paper by evaluating the net benefit to a community and its lasting impact on the individual performing mandatory versus voluntary service. I was drawn to this topic after listening to Tovia Smith’s podcast, ‘Selfish’ Giving: Does It Count If You Get In Return?. Smith interviews many professionals on their opinion on service done for personal gain. In the article, Community Service, published by the Center for Justice and Reconciliation, they define mandatory community Service as restorative justice for offenders. The Center for Justice and Reconciliation leads a reader to believe that offenders doing community service is no different than when a high school student does it for a college application. I believe that the Center for Justice and Reconciliation is correct that offenders and high school students both partake in mandatory community service but for different reasons. High school students use service to get into college while offenders use service to make amends with the community they have harmed. Both Smith and the Center for Justice and Reconciliation agree that service is good but differ on what makes it efficient. While I agree with Smith's main argument surrounding service, I believe that community service remains effective when you evaluate the motives, net benefit to community, and a lasting impact
Becoming a judge is a very fulfilling and rewarding career path. With a great salary and many benefits, a judge is a great job to have. The role of a judge is to interpret the law, evaluate the evidence given, and are one of the most important decision- makers in a courtroom. Judges have to accomplish many tasks like researching legal issues, evaluating records, motions, and applications, listen to and evaluate two sides of an argument, decides whether or not the procedure is being carried out according to the rules and law, and much more. Some important qualities that a judge must have in order to be successful is to have good writing skills so they can properly write recommendations and verdicts on disputes in a manner that each side understands the decision. Reading skills are important as well because a judge has to be able to distinguish important facts from a lot of complex information. A judge needs listening skills so they can pay attention to each side’s arguments in order to reach a fair solution. Decision-making skills are also vital for a judge to be able to evaluate the facts, apply the rules of the law, and make a just decision relatively fast. Lastly, critical thinking skills are also needed in order for a judge to correctly apply the rules of the law while not allowing personal opinions to interfere with the proceedings. With the right skills and mindset, becoming a judge will have many benefits and be very rewarding.
