Elaborate encoding is the relating things that need to be remembered to common day-to-day events. When something needs to be remembered, the human mind has to encode it. By associating relevant topics to memories, a person will relate the word to information that is already processed. Also, each study session or lesson should be done in equal time increments and done a bit each day instead of "cramming". This use of distributed practice has been shown to be more effective in processing and memory retention. During the review process new material, new insight and relationships are still connecting with old memories (Schenck, 2011, p.279). Rehearsal is the stage before the assessment, in which connections and memories are being strengthened and the ability to retrieve from the memory is almost instinctive. Effective and Ineffective study skills and strategies play an important role in getting students from processing new material to the ability to retrieve from the memory instantly. However, some strategies that we thought were effective are in in fact not effective at all. For instance, cramming is a popular form of studying. Students usually lock themselves away a few days leading up to a big test and try to fill their memory with information. This is something I use to do and my thinking was it would be fresh and easier to remember closer I got to the test. Yet, cramming simply does not work because our brains do not have the ability to store enough of the information that would be on a typical exam, in our short term memories. In fact when we cram we usually aren’t providing our bodies with the proper sleep or brain food that would help us succeed.

The encoding specificity is best understood by looking at the associations between contextual cues that were formed during the encoding and the information that needed to be encoded in the memory. Most encoding specificity is associated with cue-recall of specific episodic memory (Wardell & Read, 2013). Literary texts can be divided into commodities and non-commodities based on whether or not their messages are benefitting the author directly. If a work is created to sell an ideal that may not benefit the author immediately, it often has a larger impact on society, and it becomes a commodity. However, if the work brings in any monetary value or help to its author, it is no longer a commodity because it profited its creator. Continuous practice of learning is often seen as a solution to recalling knowledge and facts; however, not all practice is effective practice. Studies have revealed that information and skills are preserved greater when practice is spaced out rather than massed (clustered). In terms of teaching styles, spaced learning in schools would disperse the learning and boost retention levels. Almost all high schools follow similar schedules, where classes meet every other day for 90+ minutes.
