1. Explain the importance of what happened in El Valle de Anton.
The importance of El Valle De Anton spurred the movement to create systems to preserve frogs worldwide. In Panama a town name El Valle De Anton once deeply respected their golden tree frogs, and ironically they were not disturb when the frogs started disappearing. When the corpses started to pile up, the scientific community began to become concerned and began an effort to preserve the golden frog species and what they found was that frogs from around the world had been plagued by Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis-batrachos (or “Bd” for short). This plague is very hard to stop, as we cannot purge the entire planet of the disease, and the plague spreads incredibly quickly.
2. Explain the difference between a catastrophist and a uniformitarian. How did Cuvier, Darwin and Lyell fit into these categories? In what ways are both catastrophists and uniformitarians correct?
The difference between catastrophism and a uniformitarianism is a belief in that the world's organism and land dies from quick catastrophes replaced by new forms of life.

Meaning that at latitudinal points closer to the poles there is less bio-diversification, and when approaching close to the equator and tropics the bio-diversification increases. The first theory on why this occurs is that in the tropics the species evolutionary clock ticks faster, increasing the chance of genetic mutations. Another theory is that in the area of the tropics the species there are more finicky because of the consistent temperature creating a low thermal tolerance creating insuperable barriers. Another theory is that the age of the tropics, rainforests, are old in comparison to the barren ice covered lands of the polar regions, creating an ideal place for life to
One of the major concepts that was conveyed during the lecture was "Kantianism", where cat 1 identifies the action of stealing identity as a very immoral action, and is also immoral as a universal moral. Since cat 1 is unethical, then cat 2 is also immoral. On the other hand, "utilitarianism" usually comes as in an activity that has bad consequences on people. Utilitarianism is divided
1. Uniformitarianism is the theory that the Earth has remained the same, or uniform, over hundreds of millions of years. With that uniformity of the rocks and sediments in the layers of the Earth, we can trace these geological principles back to the habitats of dinosaurs because we can understand that the rocks they may have walked on, are the same rocks we see today. This helps explain the findings of fossils; archaeologists often find fossils whether it be a leaf or carbon-print of a dinosaur bone in rocks that are hundreds of millions of years old. Thus justifying uniformitarianism and how Earth has stayed uniform after all these years and we are able to find dinosaur bones and remains from our planet that is extremely aged.
The Northern Correboree Frog is an endangered species that is restricted to montane, subalpine woodlands, grassland and heathland 1,000 metres above sea level. The estimated amount of Northern Correboree Frogs is 1000-5000. One of the reasons why the Northern Correboree Frog is endangered is because of climate change. Climate change affects the Northern Correboree Frog because it was predicted that its population would decrease in winter and spring precipitation because, this would make one of the popular breeding habitats (edges of bog pools) very saturated and dry, which makes it hard for the frogs to breed.
captured and shot by muskets, and tragically died on the sight, on July 30, 1811. His
Overall for this change project, we have learned that the population of frogs has been decreasing all over the world. There are many factors that decrease their population like agriculture, invasive species, and the population of humans. Specifically, in California, only 40% of the historical sites in the Northwest area have Foothill Yellow-Legged Frogs, and this has the highest percentage out of all of California. These frogs are indicators for the environment, meaning they can determine if the area around them has changed dramatically due to their permeable skin. For our service project, we removed invasive plants like the Himalayan Blackberries and dug creek beds for the frogs. From this, we were able to improve the levelness of the area
The article explains that several measures were proposed to reduce the cane toad population, and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that it would not be easy to get rid off the cane toad population and several measures taken, but that were unsuccessful, and refutes each of the author’s reasons.
The mountain yellow-legged frog is declining due to the introduction of trout, contaminants, increased levels of ultraviolet radiation, and the fungal disease, chytridiomycosis. David Bradford, one of the first witnesses to the decline in the late seventies, noticed the species dropping because of the red-leg disease. Because this is a secondary infection, the frog’s immune system was weakened before the disease became existent. The chytrid fungus was first cited in the Sierra Nevada in 2001, brought here from African clawed frogs, but studies have suggested that the disease has been evident since the mid-‘70s. Nearly three decades later, the mountain yellow-legged frog is still declining. Currently, with a ninety-eight percent decline, there
Chapter One details the ancestry of frogs and examines the timeline of amphibians on Earth, as well as the increase in frog extinction rate. Kolbert argues that the observed extinction rates which are exceeding expected background extinction rates suggest that catastrophe is ahead for Earth. Humans are key to the extinction of Panamanian frogs due to their spreading of the Chtrid fungus, which is not native to Panama. Thus, Kolbert sees humans
Because of the positive nitrite and small amount of leukocytes I would say that could indicate a urinary tract infection.
The Sixth Extinction is a chapter found in a book titled, “The Sixth Extinction An Unnatural History by Elizabeth Kolbert”. This chapter addresses extinction or the termination of a group. The story takes place in The Panamanian town of El Valle de Anton. The story focuses on the toxic species called the golden frog. For some unknown reason(s), the golden frogs began to disappear.
Pacific Coast of Colombia is the main place where you would see the poisonous frog. Many tropical rain forests in this area are disappearing because of the farmlands that are being produced, causing Golden Poison Dart Frogs to be designated as an endangered species. The lowland rain forests, that contain steep rocky terrains, is a main habitat for the frog. The elevation is 100ft to 200ft, with the temperature
There are many environmental culprits that are causing species of amphibians to decline in numbers. Consequently, there are an alarming number of amphibians across the U.S. with deformities such as missing limbs or extra limbs due to environmental causes. Environmental scientists say that the widespread occurrence of amphibians with deformities might be due to water pollution or chemical pollutants in the water. There are other factors that might have caused these frogs to have missing or extra limbs such as parasites, ozone depletion, and weather patterns. However, Amphibians are not the only species that have declined in population. According to an article written by Beth Baker poor water quality is to blame for the decrease in population of sea grass, coral, and fish along with many other misfortunes.
dianae. This educational display will make the knowledge of rainforests and frogs easily accessible. In addition, the inclusion of R. temporaria will provide the visitors with extra educational information about the most common and familiar frog species in the biodiversity.
From the second standpoint, the perspective of Kant’s ethical theory, the mining activity of El Cerrejón in Colombia is questionable. Based on Kant´construction of the moral law (Kant, (1785)[2012]), the principles of universalism, humanity and autonomy should be applied in ethical dilemmas which means that it is the people´s moral duty to act according to the universal law, give freedom and autonomy to other people´s along with respecting their motives and interests equally.
The partitioning of the tropics into six, specific classes, which were classified with precipitation and tree cover.
