The Massacre at El Mozote as told by Mark Danner takes place El Salvador. El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America. It shares borders with Guatemala and Honduras. El Salvador is divided into 14 departments and El Mozote is a village in one of the Departments called Morazan. According to the author, the Salvadoran Civil War 1979-1992 was a conflict waged by the Military led Government of El Salvador and coalition of left-leaning militias or guerillas called the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN).The FMLN was supported by peasants and indigenous Indian people. The United States supported the El Salvador Military government.

As the narration of the Garcia’s family history progresses through the different generations, becoming more Mexican-American, or Tejano, peoples and things indigenous gradually grow faint. In her account of South Texas history, Elena devalues the importance and impact of Indians, placing a greater precedence on the Spanish settlers.

On Sunday October 2nd at 7:00pm in Weill Hall, I watched Omara Portuondo with special guests Roberto Fonseca, Anat Cohen, and Regina Carter. Omara Portuondo was the only female in the Buena Vista Social Club. The Buena Vista Social Club consisted of the most famous Cuban musicians at that time. The Club hosted dances and musical events. Omara’s special guest Roberto Fonsea is known for being a multi-instrumentalist. While Anat Cohen is known for unique playing of the clarinet because she fuses Latin jazz styles together. Regina Carter is known for being a talented jazz violinist. All the music that was song that night was in Spanish.

"La Malinche." Slave, interpreter, secretary, mistress, mother of the first "Mexican." her very name still stirs up controversy. Many Mexicans continue to revile the woman called Doña Marina by the Spaniards and La Malinche by the Aztecs, labeling her a traitor and harlot for her role as the alter-ego of Cortes as he conquered Mexico.

When thinking of New York City, more often than not, the first things one visualizes is the beautiful skyline, the bright lights, and Times Square. But without a second glance, one might miss one of the important things about the city. New York is the most heavily Dominican populated city in the United States. It’s ironic that the first non-native American to migrate to and reside on what is today New York City, was from Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominican Republic. Throughout history, Dominicans have migrated to the US in search of economic opportunity. This is the factor that influences nearly every immigrant group that migrates to the US in history. In the early 1900s, The United States and the Dominican Republic had a very close diplomatic relationship, to the point where the President considered annexation. At one point, the United States completely controlled the Sugar industry, one of the country’s most profitable markets.

Tischausen, Tischausen remarks that, “The army tried to dry those areas up, knowing that they were not going to be able to work any solution with the civilian population of El Mozote” (Leslie V. Tischausen). Atlacatl’s philosophy was to kill everybody, without even knowing who was a guerrilla and who was not. This lead to many casualties but in the end effective because, El Mozote is no longer controlled by the Salvadoran guerrillas since January16, 1992, after a peace accords were signed.

Spain during the 16th century has been described as a time of oppression, a time of exploitation of the subordinate class. For example, in the text of The Life of Lazarillo De Tormes a gluttonist priest offers Lazarillo scraps of an Eucharist bread, that was nibbled by mice. The priest tells Lazaro to take the bread, stating “There, eat that. The mouse is a clean animal.” This shows the how the higher class sees the lower class, it shows how they believe in offerings coming from them should be taken as a gift, even if a literal rodent has tampered with it. The salvadoran military ruled for decades until finally the death of an archbishop Oscar Romero was assassinated during mass in 1980, which fueled political violence and led to the civil war. To make matters worse, at Oscar Romero’s funeral, many came to mourn and were attacked by snipers on the roofs, killing 42 and wounding 200. In December 1980, four American nuns were killed by the military even though they framed 5 salvdorans, 4:5 spoke out and told the press they were ordered to by the Salvadoran military. Then in 1982 there was a new president that was elected because of a military coup and his name was General Effrain Rios Montt. He was fully against the government system they currently had and he had annulled the 1965 constitution, dissolved the congress and had banned all political parties. This turned the government system in Guatemala to be fully under the control of the army. He also would later that year form local civilian defense groups to work alongside the military in search of the guerilla fighters. They had recovered most of the territory that the guerilla fighters had gained and gave no place for guerilla fighters to feel safe.
