Effects Of Poverty On African American

According to King, what hardships do African Americans face? Give two examples from the speech.

Can you imagine having a hard-working day at work with no food, unhealthy work conditions, and little to no support? It is no surprise that young African Americans are struggling in almost every arena, due to these matters: malnutrition, health hazards and lack of guidance. There are many elements working against young African American males that affect them biologically, psychologically and socially. Their parents have a lot to do with the way they are affected. Parents need to work hard to provide the basic needs that their children need to survive, but can’t meet the need due to inadequate funds, poor housing, and no health care.

Since the early 1960s poverty rates for African American adults and children has been a problem. But, since the early 1960s the poverty rate has shrieked for specifically the African American children over twenty percent. There are many reason why this shrinkage has happened but I specifically would like to talk about one African American graduating high school and receiving Federal Financial Aid.

“The United States has the highest poverty rate of any advance industrial nation” (Elizabetha, 2013). For many years, black people have considered to be the poorest race in the United states. There have been many government programs put in place to help poverty among black Americans. Such as welfare, unemployment, and Medicaid just to name a few. The question is, with so many government programs, why does poverty still exist among Black Americans?

Since the first African slaves were brought to America in 1619, life for African Americans has been a struggle. During the time of slavery, blacks were treated just like animals. They were the property of their owners and only received what their masters deemed necessary. Because of this, blacks received little health care and had to survive off of the scraps they were given. As time went on, African Americans learned how to adapt to their surrounds. They made the best meals they could from the food they had, and made medicine from the plants and resources that they had. I never really thought of Latino problems in depth, I only used to think of the hardships that African Americans have to face on a day to day basis. After reading this excerpt, I understand that African Americans are not the only race that feel like they are being oppressed. Just like the black community, latinos are set up by the government to live a certain life. They grow up in these areas where they are set up to be gangsters, or at least not to succeed in society. The United States developed the official poverty measures in 1960. It was developed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, who had declared a war on poverty during the Civil Rights era. Poverty and inequality have virtually plagued every country on the planet, including our own wealthy, free, and developed nation. Poverty is when people lack certain resources to meet basic living requirements. Inequality can be equated as the different levels of wealth, opportunities, and resources given to different groups of people. While white people do suffer from poverty, minorities are impacted by poverty and inequality on a much larger scale. Although there are far more white Americans in our country, poverty among African Americans is almost three times the percentage of white Americans in poverty. Overall, poverty affects more than 40 million people in the United States alone. Both poverty and inequality hinder the ability of these 40 million people to provide for their family and pay for housing, food, and living necessities. In the video Two nations of Black America, two groups of the same race were divided on how to react to key issues they were dealing with at the time. The groups generally had the same goals on fighting the racial discrimination they were experiencing. However, both groups had very different views on how to do that. The groups were dealing with social inequality from different directions because of other key issues that separated them such as education and social class. Yet, when I called someone black, they would say, "Why are you so cruel? Why are you calling us black?' African American women are dying at a much higher rate in preventable health issues like HIV/AIDS, diabetes and heart disease. In February 2005, the Black AIDS Institute found that black women accounted for 72 percent of new HIV/AIDS cases in women in Los Angeles alone. Black women are also 25 times higher to get HIV/AIDS which is mostly due to inadequate health screenings.
