Aerosol hairspray does destroy the Ozone Layer. There are chemicals that are harmful to the ozone layer and are destroying the ozone layer. Plus, with all the people that use it on a day-to-day basis, it adds up a lot. I know that my mom uses it every day and she uses a lot, almost to where it fogs up her room. Here are reason why it destroys the ozone layer. My first reason is because of a chemical called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). It has a tendency to drift up to the layer of ozone gas that surrounds the Earth and break up the ozone molecules. CFCs were found in aerosol cans that sprayed substances like deodorant and hairspray and in refrigerants, fire extinguishers and solvents for cleaning. Other ozone depleting chemicals were found
How do CFCs or chlorofluorocarbons affect Canada’s Ozone layer. To answer this question we first have to understand chlorofluorocarbons and the earth's ozone layer. Chlorofluorocarbons are chemical compounds made up of three chlorine atoms. One fluorine atom and 1 carbon atom. There were many uses for CFCs ranging from, being used as coolants in refrigerants to propellants for aerosols to being used as solvents for dry cleaning. As CFCs are non- flammable and not very toxic we thought they were a revolutionary compound, but unfortunately CFCs were one of the leading causes for the depletion of our ozone layer. ozone is a type of oxygen, an ozone molecule consists of three oxygen atoms whereas a regular oxygen molecule only consists of two.
Hairspray is an up beat musical that is set in the 1960’s Baltimore. Teenager, Tracy Turnblad, is in love with music and dancing. She auditions for The Corny Collins Show and wins. Tracy becomes a trendsetter of fashion, fun and dance. Tracy decides that The Corny Collins Show should change Negro Day to everyday. With the help of Penny Pingleton, Seaweed, Link Larkin, and Motormouth Maybelle they make the show integrated.
The ozone should always stay in tact to protects the earth from UV radiation, which is harmful to humans (skin cancer) and also the earth (global warming). If allowed to build up indoors, VOCs often contribute to lightheadedness, headaches, allergies and more importantly has also scientifically proven harmful to asthma sufferers. As a matter of fact, according to Professor Roy Harrison, professor of environmental health at Birmingham University, there is a body of research on VOCs in the indoor environment which links them with those kinds of symptoms - headaches and not feeling so good (news.bbc.co.uk). After proven to have negative effects on the ozone layer as well as humans, the production of CFCs was shut down and in fact it’s banned in the US. Some scientists were not convinced by the act of banning CFCs in spite of all these evidences. “Given the large economic impact of a ban — it was estimated that industries relying on CFC production generated $8 billion in business and employed 200,000 people in 1974 — several scientists in the field advocated waiting a few years for science to make more progress on the issue before making any policy decisions.” (bio.sunyorange.edu)
Hairspray is a solution of long, chainlike molecules (called polymers) in a very volatile solvent. Spraying deposits a stiff layer of the polymer on your hair after the solvent evaporates.
Hairspray is a film by John Waters that stars a number of actors and actresses; some fresh, some old, and some who disappear into obscurity after this film about 1960s Baltimore and its segregation. Ricki Lake plays a pleasantly plump high school girl in the early 60s named Tracey Turnblatt. Her mother, played by the character actor formerly known as Divine, irons and cleans neighbors' clothes for a living and Tracey's father, portrayed by Jerry Stiller, owns the Hardy Harr-Harr Joke-shop. Her and friend Penny Pingleton, performed by Leslie Ann Powers, watch a teen dance show called the Corny Collins Show, where Negro Day is the last Thursday of every month, hosted by Miss Motormouth Maybelle, Ruth Brown, because the 1960s was segregated leaving the show to be almost white only. Tracey and Penny audition to be on the show's council. Tracey is chosen and makes Amber Von-Tussle, Colleen Fitzpatrick, jealous. Tracey eventually ends up going steady with Amber's boyfriend, Link, Michael St. Gerard, and gaining popularity on top of it, fueling Amber more. She runs against her for Miss Auto Show 1963. Tracey wins, but due to a race riot at Amber's parents', Sonny Bono and Debbie Harry, own Titled Acres, was sentenced to reform school, defaulting Amber as the winner. The governor, Leo Rocca, is forced to pardon Tracey and allow integration as well, dethroning Amber and giving Tracey her title.
During the early sixties, being different was not the fad. Throughout the movie Hairspray, it is shown that one should not be judged by how they look on the outside but what is on the inside. No one had given those of color a chance to do anything until Tracy Turnblad showed up. African Americans were looked down upon especially when it came down to who was allowed to be on a specific television show in Baltimore, Maryland. She ends up joining this local TV dance show that stars only Caucasian kids.
One reason for this difference in ozone concentrationduring the summer can be attributed to wind patterns. Ozone travels from the west and northeast, passing over the Ohio Valley, and into Virginia, through winds that bring in the pollution produced by the coal mines in Ohio. These coal mines are active in the summer because of the compatible weather present and the ideal time to urbanize the seaboard. Though occasional low pressure systems may cleanse the atmosphere of the ozone, the wind from such coal mines keeps pushing in the ozone, increasing the concentration for the summer rather than the winter. A similar scenario occurs with biomass burning, a predominantly human activity that occurs toward mid-summer.
Hairspray is the most overpowering and subjugated musical/play that has been created. Not only Hairspray is about racial integration and human rights, but it's about accepting yourself and discovering what characteristics makes a person unique. It all starts in a small town called Baltimore in the 1960s, with a girl named Tracy Turnblad. Tracy isn't popular or has an "idle" body figure. However, Tracy does not care what everyone else thinks and auditions for a spot on a dancing show called "The Corny Collins Show". Tracy gets accepted into the show and becomes an overnight celebrity. Meanwhile, the show former star Amber Von Tussle is jealous and furious so when the miss teen hairspray pageant comes around Amber's mother forges the tallies
Hairspray is a fantastic film and the version that I watched was the newest adaptation. It contained an all-star cast and numerous other awesome performing artists. The musical numbers were an incredible touch to the film, as they regularly served to get a strong message across. I discovered it exceptionally rousing how Tracy Turnblad was unaffected by individuals provoking her overweightness. She utilized the teasing as inspiration to demonstrate the world that she was a decent artist and that she could make it onto the Corny Collins Show. Another aspect of the film that I really enjoyed was the mix of characters. They were in all different shapes, sizes, colors, and financial backgrounds. This made Hairspray more relatable and in addition sensible, which is good because it did brought up some realistic topics relating to racism and obesity.
In Sociology there are four main theoretical perspectives: conflict, interactionist, functionalist, and feminist. The perspective that stands out to me in the movie I chose, Hairspray, is the conflict perspective. The conflict perspective focuses on the conflict between classes and how to overcome it. The movie Hairspray is a movie that takes place in 1962. It is about a pleasantly plump teenager, Tracy Turnblad, and best friend Penny Pingleton, who are obsessed with a segregated dance show “The Corny Collins Show” and the beautiful heartthrob star of the show Link Larkin.
When I saw Hairspray the Musical there were three things that I noticed that were important in making the theatrical performance. Those three things were the acting, production, and how the actors made us, the audience, feel. Each of these things contribute greatly to any performance. I feel that this production of Hairspray hit each of these notes very well.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s): CFC’s are lowering the average concentration of ozone in the stratosphere. “Since 1978 the use of CFC’s in aerosol cans has been banned in the United States, Canada and most Scandinavian countries. Aerosols are still used around the world and accounts for 25% of global CFC’s use”. (Miller 448). Spray cans discarded or leaking refrigerator and air conditioning equipment and the burning plastic foam products release the CFC’s into the atmosphere. Depending on the type, CFC’s stay in the atmosphere from 22 to 111 years.” Chlorofluorocarbons move up to the stratosphere gradually over several decades. Under high energy ultra violet (UV) radiation break them down and release chlorine atoms, which speed up the breakdown of ozone (O3) into oxygen (O2). Chlorofluorocarbons, also known as Freons, are green house gas that contributes to global warming. Photochemical air pollution is commonly referred to as “smog”. Smog is the contraction of the words smoke and fog, smog has been caused by water condensing on smoke particles, usually from burning coal. With the introduction of petroleum to replace coal economies in countries, photochemical smog has become predominant in many cities, which are located in sunny warm and dry climates with many motor vehicles. Many of us might not understand how important the ozone layer is to our planet. So that is why we should take more care of our environment so we don’t deplete our ozone layer even more. To some this topic may not be important and they don’t understand what affects these dangerous chemicals can have on our environment. Hopefully reading this they will want to take better care of our planet for our future generations.
We use all kinds of chemicals that are damaging our air. Sprays containing chlorofluorocarbons damaging ozone layer in very top part of out atmosphere. Pesticide and other chemicals use for protecting some plant might protect plants, but they are not helping to our air at all.
These chemicals, once released, take quite a long time to degrade. It takes them years to move through the atmosphere to the location of the ozone layer. These chemicals are broken down by the ultra violet rays from the sun ultimately breaking down into chlorine and bromide molecules which are responsible for the destruction of the ozone layer. Ozone layer is found in two layers i.e. the “good” and “bad” ozone layer (Filder 131). The bromide and chloride atoms destroy the “good” ozone. One molecule of chlorine is estimated to be capable of
