Edward Taylor and Anne Bradstreet are two 17th century Puritan writers. Very so like most Puritans, their works reflect their beliefs. Even though the writers are Puritans, they share some similarities while having some differences. Taylor’s works have a single focus which is totally religion-based; on the other hand, Bradstreet’s works have a multiple focus of a personal level and of God. Alternatively, both writers highly respect God.
Bradstreet uses metaphors and analogies of her own experiences and struggles with life to show God’s grace. In her poem, “Here Follows Some Verses upon the Burning of Our House”, Bradstreet uses her skills to illustrate the destruction of her home and belongings. She personifies the poem as a child “Thou ill-formed offspring of my feeble brain” (Line 1). The offspring “poem” is horrible and “ill-formed.” When she first writes her book, it is not good and she does not want it to be published. Throughout the poem, she describes the process of her book being published and her as a poet accepting her work. As for Edward Taylor, he writes with a narrower focus and that is a focus on God. In all of his poems, he centers on God, but he is best known for his great poem, “Huswifery.” In this poem, the speaker compares God making him into a better man to a woman’s spinning wheel. The poem opens with the pleading statement, “Make me, O Lord, Thy spinning wheel complete” (Line 1). The speaker wants God to take control and thread him into a man of his Holiness and righteousness. The speaker will then be a creation from God himself. Hence, these two 17th century poets share similarities, but not in their style of writing. Both poets share their beliefs of Puritanism, but Anne Bradstreet also, gives readers a glimpse of herself.
