Sir Edward William Elgar was born on June 2, 1857. Elgar was a classical English composer who had written many famous works throughout his lifespan and was a very successful composer. Elgar may be referred to as an English composer; however, his influences mostly came from continental Europe. A self-taught composer, he sometimes felt out of place both socially and musically. Even though he felt like an outsider he was a very humble man throughout all of his success. When he achieved his success he was very proud of himself while still remaining humble because it had been a long journey to success. This area also created his love for the countryside and beautiful views. These positive influenced led him to start composing very early. He wrote music for the Elgar children to use in a play that he later used in an orchestra, with minor changes, called “The Wand of Youth”. Elgar got his education from Littleton House school , but it was not a musical education. He received musical training from Adolf Pollitzer whenever he visited London. However, most of his musical learning was done in his earlier age and he learned from books and taught himself. Even though Alice was eight years older she became his wife after three years under his teaching. Alice’s parents, however, did not like this arrangement. They thought her unwise to marry a man who was an unknown musician and also a practice of the Roman Catholic faith so they disowned her. They got married on May 8,1889 and from then on Alice was viewed as Elgar’s business manager. Later on in their marriage the Elgar’s moved to London in hope of a greater success for Edward. It was here that Elgar started to hear different types of music and gained more experience and culture of music. They later had Carice Irene, their only daughter, born on August 14,
