Rita sat by her husband facing the window. He stared out into nothing. There was little evidence of any thought process from either of them, only an occasional whine from the patient.
A nurse entered the room, greeted Rita, but received no response. The nurse bathed and manipulated Morrison’s legs and arms as if to invoke an act of movement from her patient. Earlier, the doctors and attendants spoke to Rita about the slight improvements they had detected. They found the sounds he made relating to speech, baffling. They asked her to interpret the sound their patient intermittently made: ‘E-bi’. Rita guessed it was her son’s name. She wondered if it was a compassionate call to his son, or of a more devious rancor.

Morrison was completely dependent on his caretakers, his wife and Levi. They taught Levi to lift his father out of his bed and into the wheelchair. Levi showed exemplary patience and perhaps even concern for his father.

They shipped Mr. Morrison to a handicap center and their Central Park apartment, sold. Mother and son discussed domestic changes to Levi’s studio with the intent that she move
In Morrison's novel, the father sees love as ownership. After Milkman begins working for him, he is "delighted. His son belongs to him now and not to Ruth(63)." In addition, the father wishes for his son to focus less on education and more on the "American Dream". He tells Milkman, "Let me tell you right now the one important thing you'll ever need to know: own things. And let the things you own own other things. Then you'll own yourself and other people too(55)." Milkman's father did not have any respect for college graduates. He believed that "college was time spent
As a result of this abuse, Laurie tried to inform the Morrisons of his struggles with his father, but was too afraid to and abruptly left. This shows that at his home, there is no individual he can talk with to discuss his problems and mistrust in his father. Furthermore, he is described as a straggler, and is seen covered in bruise marks. This shows the true amount of abuse, as he instantly tries to cover it up, and is too afraid to speak to anyone about
