In Kate Chopin’s “The Locket” Edmond and Octavie are engaged during the American Civil War. Edmond is a soldier who carries a locket that has Octavie’s picture inside. Other soldiers joke that the locket is a talisman that protects him. Later, a preacher finds a dead soldier wearing the locket, which he assumes to be Edmond. Octavie is devastated by Edmond’s death after receiving a letter and the locket from the preacher. Eventually however Edmond comes back from the war; the locket was stolen by the soldier who died. Octavie is shocked and delighted by her fiancé’s return. I was surprised by this plot because I felt the same way as Octavie. First, in the first scene the soldier jokes with Edmond that his locket protects him. While I was reading this I expected Edmond to be safe because he is protected by the locket. As Edmond said to Nick "I don't know how I could have gone through this year and a half without it." Since Edmond was fighting for the Confederates, it was important for him to carry around a talisman for protection. The locket also symbolizes Octavie’s love protecting Edmond. …show more content…
The locket was supposed to protect Edmond, so I did not expect his death. Also the image of the solider dying was shocking: “His hands were clutching the sward on either side and his finger nails were stuffed with earth and bits of grass that he had gathered in his despairing grasp upon life... Around his neck hung a gold chain and locket. The priest, bending over him, unclasped the chain and removed it from the dead soldier's neck.” This quote made me think that Edmond’s talisman did not work for him. Furthermore, it would not made me think that somebody else could be wearing the
Four confederate soldiers where talking over the fire while waiting for orders from Edmond. Edmond had on a necklace and the other soldiers noticed and asked about it. Edmond told them it was a catholic token to protect him from danger, and it has protected him the whole time he's been at war. He told them that Octavia had given it to him. The locket contained a picture of he parents and the date they were married. Later that evening war broke out and a clergyman walked into the aftermath of the war trying to save the souls of people that may be alive. He saw a soldier with a locket and tore it away from him. He sent the locket with a letter to whoever was closest to the person that the locket belonged to.
The Locket captures the grief and pain that accompanies war. In the story, Octavie goes through the worst nightmare for anyone with a loved one fighting in combat - the loss of that loved one. But fortunately for her, Edmund ultimately returned. This came as a complete surprise to me as the reader due to the numerous details in the story pointing at his death, but I was ultimately relieved and happy that Edmund returned to Octavie. The details of the appearance of the soldier who actually died, the ominous tone created by the author’s prose, and the reappearance of the matching locket returned by the clergyman made the eventual return of Edmund all the more suspenseful.
Edmond, a dear loved one of Octavie, was assumingly dead. This was a part of “The Locket”, close to the conclusion in fact. A priest found a locket, which was given to Edmond from Octavie, on a dead unidentifiable man that was found on a battlefield. This gave me the allusion that Edmond ha deceased and as the locket was sent back to Octavie with a letter describing what the priest seen and where he found the locket, which convinced the dear girl that the man she loved has died. Octavie was engaged to Edmond and was grieving his death, wearing black, talking to his father Judge Pillier, and rereading the letter that was sent to her. As the ending of the story drew near, small hints, such as Judge Pillier saying “Do you not think that on a day
The story of The locket is set during the civil war which was fought between the slave states of the south and the free states of the north. The war lasted from 1841 to 1865, it was a time of great bloodshed and losses, separation was one of the greatest causes of the war and one of the major themes of the story, Edmond, the main character and his wife Octavie love each other dearly and don't want to be apart from each other, but Edmond is called away to serve in the civil war, before he goes Octavie gives him a locket for him to take with him when he goes, it will help Edmond always remember that he has something to live for, someone to go back, separation is hard, but the the only cure is time. The setting at the beginning of the story is at a slope of a hill during the civil war, the setting later switches to central Louisiana. The Locket is a story that creates moments of sadness and despair but ends with a surprising ending. Miracles can happen when you least expect them.
First off, Edmond received a locket from octavie before leaving for war. He states, “He could not have gotten through a year and a half without it”. While reading a letter Edmond begins to dream about the day he receiving the locket from octavie, which was “her
The whole family had been cursed since I had lost that locket. My mother’s locket was given to me the day after she died. My mom’s best friend, the cook, had given it to me. I would wear it everywhere, and I wouldn't take it off for anything. I was very close with my mom, and we would do everything together, we would climb trees and run around outside, even if it was known as unladylike. She died last year in a car crash. I’m Marianne Maladroit and now that I've lost the locket, my family is destined to fail.
The Locket is ultimately about second chances and what you would or wouldn't do if you made a horrible mistake and desperately wanted to take it back.
This is the first time I read the story of “The Locket.” The background information said it was about the Civil War and people getting hurt. From the title it was obvious to me there would be a relationship between a man and a woman. I have seen enough movies to know there is sometimes a love story put in a war story. I wasn’t sure how the locket was going to come into the story. As a surprise to me I didn’t expect the ending. I didn’t understand what happened at first. I had to read it more than once to understand what happened. I thought Edmond died and Octavie would just have to be sad about it for the rest of her life. I didn’t expect to see with Edmond again.
Nothing that was written by the author was predictable. In the beginning of the story we learn that several men around the campfire were questioning Edmond about the locket, but Edmond would't answer. The men began to make up ideas of what the locket could mean, such as a "magical Catholic to protect Edmond." Without Edmond answering any questions about the locket, it began to raise curiosity among the men. Edmond falls asleep with the locket around his neck and begins to dream, he dreams of a serpent trying to strangle him while sleeping and the snake slithers away before Edmond can get it. This was a surprise during the short story because he was dreaming what was actually happening to him by one of the men at the campfire. One of the men at the campfire was stealing the locket from around his neck as Edmond was sleeping.
“You don’t look busy,” he said as he gave a look around the room, “Besides, what can be better than spending time with me?” “Anything,” I said as I gave him a dead serious face. Ignoring the subject, John began towards my kitchen. “You have a nice house red,” he said as he sat at the kitchen table, “are ready to start?” “Do I have to remind you whose house this is?,” I said as I watched the locket on the table. Leaning back on the kitchen chair, John said, “Come on. Don’t be so stiff-.” Clank, made the locket as it hit the
loneliness, and bereavement. The rose is designated in this story’s title as an emblem of Miss
My feelings toward the conclusion of the story was that it I was shocked and confused. In my opinion, the conclusion of the story really changed everything. This ending made the story even better and even a mystery because now since we know his locket was stolen from him, it gives me a interest to find out who stole Edmond's locket and why did that soldier steal it from it ? The ending of the story made me want to read more about this and I'm really fascinated.
When the priest found the locket on the dead soldiers body, I assumed it was Edmond's. Some soldiers die in battle and I thought this
When Edmond started to discuss the locket with the other soldiers it only made it more obvious. The way he loved her made it clear that their would be heartbreak and tragedy. Him being a main character may have fooled the more modern readers, how could an important character die? But i'm sure many others had seen the outcome coming. Especially because of his love for her, most readers are used to
Was the ending of The Locket, written by Kate Chopin, predictable or was it surprising? The ending of The Locket was predictable. It was predictable because active readers will pick up Kate Chopin’s clues that Ned is still alive while Octavie thinks he’s dead. In addition, in the story The Locket, there happens to be a lot of “What if?” – both in the ending and throughout the story. There were a lot of holes that make you think of many solutions to explain events. It’s the kind of story you want a movie for to fill in those gaps.
