Pop culture has a way of making change that rivals some influential political figures. Singers are no exception; by spreading their message to offering a form of entertainment they can impact a nation. Since 1848, the French chanteuse is a symbol of French identity; an example would be Edith Piaf due to the influence on French culture. France’s belle époque was one of the highest points in France’s history and it is the root to why Paris France is one of the strongest tourist destinations in the world today. One of the most important venues of the period is the café-concert, and Le Moulin Rouge. The culmination of the belle époque and the chanteuse during the Popular Front gave Edith Piaf an atmosphere to help shape the French’s identity. …show more content…

There are three types of chanteuses: the pierrueses, the diseuses, and the chanteuses à voix. The first type of chanteuses is the pierruese; which worked lower-class establishments and dressed very obscenely to overcompensate for their lack of musical ability, in other words they were streetwalkers. The second types, the diseuses, were often actresses and singers or termed speakers. The final type was the chanteuses à voix, as they were voice singers whom were very talented. Which leads to Edith Piaf, one of France’s most popular chanteuses à voix in France or at the time in the world, but her road to fame did not come easy.
