The dark side of human nature can be defined as the root of all conflicts within the human race. It is what plagues us all as it creates a world full of darkness and evil. Edgar Allan
Poe uses the dark side of human nature to create a demoralizing and daunting story in both “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.” In “The Cask of Amontillado,” one can see that the dark side of human nature is conveyed through Montresor’s actions of murdering his enemy, Fortunato. As seen in “The Tell-Tale Heart,” the dark side of human the race is shown through the protagonists dark and treacherous actions resulting in the death of an innocent, old man. The dark side of human nature, and the dreadful actions that are taken within the stories, are prime examples of the devilish and demonic forces within our world. The dark side of human nature is expressed in “The Cask of Amontillado and “The Tell-Tale Heart” through the protagonist’s actions of guilt, deceit and insanity.
Guilt is expressed multiple times throughout both “The Cask of Amontillado” and
“The Tell-Tale Heart.” The protagonist in “The Tell-Tale Heart” is unable to maintain his innocence as the guilt within him is built up and then released when admitting to the deed.
The narrator says, "Villains!" I shrieked, "dissemble no more! I admit the deed!... --tear up the planks! here, here! --It is the beating of his hideous heart!"”(Poe 96). The protagonist’s mention of villains represents the devilish and sinful ideas that take over the mental side of him. The guilt may also be symbolized through the intense beating of the old man’s heart. The narrator says, “It was the beating of the old man's heart. It increased my fury, as the beating of a drum stimulates the soldier into courage.”(Poe The protagonist’s mental breakdown when becoming obsessed with the beating of the heart symbolizes the guilt that has been taking a toll on his mind. The heartbeat that he hears and believes to be of the old man’s, is in reality the heartbeat of his own. The heartbeating, that is only heard by the protagonist when considering and then committing the murder, symbolizes the guilt that is felt by the protagonist.
