As Edelman (Chapter 8, 2004) supposing some of the diseases which has cognitive losses including OCD are that interrupted signals projected from the basal ganglia (caudate nucleus is one of the nucleus in basal ganglia) into prefrontal cortex (orbitofrontal cortex is in the region of prefrontal
Chapter 3 "Critical Thinking and Argument" of Andrea A. Lunsford's book Easy Writer, covers how to critically understand and make an educated argument. Lunsford first explains how to critically read and analyze the meaning or purpose of a text. Lunsford gives the reader a method to do this which includes previewing the text, taking notes, writing a summary of the text and the making an analysis of the work. Next Lunsford explains how to identify different types of appeals in a texts argument. These appeals include emotional, ethical and logical appeals. Emotional appeals center around personal values and human emotions. Ethical appeals deal with personal morals and the goodwill of humans. Logical appeals are based solely on facts and research.
In chapter 8, Grant recalls his own teacher Matthew Antoine. Mr. Antoine hated teaching and his own students. To Mr. Antoine education is only good for making new teachers which sustain the cycle of uselessness. As Mr. Antoine becomes older he sees no evidence that education can lead to an improvement in the real word. Mr. Antoine describes to Grant that you can teach a black child but they won’t do any good for themselves with what you taught them. He says that blacks are just meant to run away. Mr. Antoine hates himself for the color he bears. ‘When you see that those five and a half months you spend in that church each year are just a waste of your time, you will. You will. You’ll see that it’ll take more than five and a half months
In chapter 11 of the textbook Ruddiman talks about two main greenhouse gases CO2 and methane and how they stayed around in our atmosphere, ice sheets, and land for thousands of years. He states that cores of todays ice sheets contain vital climatic signals which can be found under the center of an ice sheet. Drilling these ice sheets can take longer than a single summer, but in the end this information is crucial. Scientists look at carbon isotopes to determine how carbon has moved along time. Ruddiman states they move in two forms, organic carbon and inorganic carbon. He also says that when the ice sheets were large in size carbon dioxide concentrations were low, but when ice sheets were small or nonexistent then CO2 was higher. There are
Thea wakes up first, so she wakes Lily up and they play on their floor for a while until Tom comes in and joins them, Toms says that it's good to let you child side out once in a while. Addison comes in the room and says that breakfast is ready and that everyone should come and sit at the table. Tom and the girl's go and sit at the table and it's full of food again.
Eric Schlosser starts with the scenery of Colorado Springs, how in just three decades it went from vast, open nature, to having fast food restaurants placed anywhere and everywhere readily accessible. A majority of land withholding pure nature and free roaming animals was a view to others, the opportunity to place mass fast food corporations. These mass fast food corporations have not only broadened the American’s average diet, it has also affected the landscape, culture, and the overall economy of America. The culture of the average citizen’s meal included going to the grocery store to buy food staples such as vegetables or meat, that were to be prepared later for homemade meals. Nowadays, the popular culture of American citizens is to hit
The CNS is further supported by a series of blood vessels that travel through and around the brain bringing oxygen and nutrients that are required for cell health. The CNS is further segmented by lobes such as the frontal lobe which the main role is executive function, long term memory and primary motor function. The temporal lobe which is responsible for language and sensory functioning, and the parietal lobe are responsible for somatosensory functions, and occipital lobe which is the visual association area (Hendelman, 2006). Each of these lobes controls cognitive functions, memory, motor, sight, smell, emotions and bodily functions, and are interconnected by the corpus callosum. Further structures include the basal ganglia, the brainstem, the cerebellum, the diencephalon, the thalamus and the hypothalamus, which are all divided and supported via the ventricles and sulcus which is where the cerebral spinal fluid [CSF] fills and acts as a cushion and nutrient for the brain (Hendelman, 2006). In a healthy functioning person all of these complex structures interconnect to control and regulate not only bodily functions, temperatures, nutrients, and processes, but also complex cognitive and psychological processes. A healthy brain additionally has smaller amounts of accumulated beta-amyloid plaques which can form extracellular aggregations of fibrils, as well as less of hyper-phosphorylation of tau protein which helps to create intracellular neurofibrillary tangles. A healthy brain additionally has balanced neurotransmitters and blood devoid of cholesterol and with balanced blood sugars (Bryant & Knights ,
Jim was influenced by the different missionaries visiting his home, who then told him about their life on faraway mission fields. He asked them questions and dreamed about being a missionary himself some day.
1. Chapter 1, is about introducing the Tres Camarones, the state of Sinaloa, Mexico. Also, since the people in that town didn’t like change much there are already danger roaming around like the bandidos who will be evading the town.
Ed's journey via his missions captures the reoccurring theme of hatred for himself. It is evident Ed Kennedys view of himself is negative. In "Part One: The First Message", Ed introduces himself to the reader and compares himself to other peoples accomplishments that are the same age as him. The quote "No real career." No respect in the community.
Ceri Dean discusses many structures tasks in chapter 9 that can be applied to the classroom. In science, we use several of these throughout the school year. These structured task include problem solving and experimental investigation. The deduction method is typically used and explained as the scientific method. According to Dean deduction method gets better results than the induction method (Dean,2012, p.137). The scientific method in my class is dissected into parts and taught by example and practice. I want my students to be able to take any experimental investigation and identify the parts of the scientific method. By the time students get to 11th and 12th grade they should be able to identify and apply the parts of the scientific
While chapter 13 was very short, it still held quite a bit of important information. Seligman recapped on the pleasant life, meaningful life, and the good life. He went on to explain that if you lead all three you are leading a full life. Though the part that stood out to me was when he mentioned that pleasures are momentary and are defined by felt emotion. I am not sure why but this part really made me look into the parts of my life that I may take for granted. While chapter 14 was focused on the meaning and purpose of life. Seligman notes that the reader can choose whichever life they would like. I particularly like the way Seligman ended the chapter: “A life that does this is pregnant with meaning, and if God comes at the end, such a life is sacred” (pg 260). Though I did not enjoy how the entirety of the chapter was a story about his friend, I thought there could have been somthign more important in its place.
In this case, however, it has been proven that individuals with OCD have increase levels of dopamine compare to those with normal amounts of it. Dopamine is also considered a neurotransmitter which is responsible for motivation, rewards and compulsion.Since dopamine is also a neurotransmitter it works the same way as serotonin. Neurons are constantly communicating with each other this shapes how we think, feel and act. These nerve cells are jointed by the synapse where messages are passed on from one neuron to the next. One of the neuron’s is responsible for receiving information and the other one sends out the information. The sending neuron contains dopamine. When something good happens it releases the chemical to the synapse which are connected tp receptors. After this process dopamine actives the receiving neuron. Receptors activate the dopamine One location where this neurotransmitter is produced is in the hypothalamus. Its primary function is to maintain a balance of various hormones this is known as homestatios. Unlike, serotonin where there was a deficiency with the amount, dopamine in the other hand is the opposite, too much of it has been produced. This causes people to make unnecessary repetitive movements, like excessive eye-movement or meaningless
Scientists know that there are certain genes that cause this disorder, but as of now, they haven’t been able to pinpoint the specific gene. It is believed that OCD is caused as a result of a problem with the chemicals that deliver nerve cells to the brain. When the nerve cells are unable to reach the brain, or there are not enough delivered to the brain, the person can begin to dwell on certain things, leaving them with a feeling of doubt and worry. There are some rare cases, where young children get OCD when they are recovering from Strep Throat. While this is extremely rare, the symptoms appear out of nowhere, and are extremely severe.
The documentary of Ed Edelman brought forth a politicians successful career, with numerous achievements helping the community, especially the impoverished, and help setting the foundations for numerous public entities. On the other hand, Dr. Williams, in the Sierra Health Foundation’s Speaker Series, had shown the shortcomings of the American health system, despite the United States being one of the biggest spenders of healthcare in the world. I’ve known that the American healthcare system is an expensive system and not everyone can afford healthcare, but the variance in quality of healthcare in a single city is outrageous. Dr. Williams had stated that the life expectancy in Washington D.C can differ by a few years as you traverse the metro stations.
While it has proven to be difficult to end poverty in America, Peter Edelman is optimistic. In his book So Rich, So Poor Edelman makes a call to action. There are four prominent ideas that underpin Edelman’s reasoning throughout the book: (1) More people must understand why poverty is still so prevalent in America; (2) extreme poverty must be taken into consideration as a shocking 6 million Americans’ sole income was food stamps in 2011. This fact alone creates a sense of urgency that drives Edelman; (3) increasing income inequality should be treated as a moral issue; and (4) bold political action will be required if substantive progress will be made in alleviating poverty.
