Ed Sheeran’s X was a sweeping success hitting number one in fifteen countries and topping charts in the United Kingdom and United States. Being only his second album ever released, this was quite a feat. The album contained songs of Ed’s various styles from gentle love songs to upbeat hip hop to quick rap and showed that Ed knows what he’s doing in the music world. Due to the personal experiences, passionate emotions, and diverse musical styles poured into X, Ed’s album captivated crowd internationally and proved that once again, he has what it takes to be a star. Ed’s music is so enjoyable to such large crowds because of the way he relates his own experiences into the lyrics of his music. While his grandfather suffered from Alzheimer's disease, Ed wrote a song called “Afire Love.” In this song, the lyrics “Things …show more content…
For example, in his song “I’m A Mess”, Ed sings of his confused thoughts and desperate actions after a breakup, He sings,”oh I’m a mess right now, inside out/ Searching for sweet surrender but this is not the end.” This very relatable statement is the base message of the song and means that he is emotionally confused and thinks that there is a way to put his relationship back together. Because of Ed’s simple, yet artistic lyrics, his audiences can relate to his experiences which connects him to his audiences.
His other song “Thinking Out Loud”, his most successful song hitting number 2 on the Billboard hot 100 and top 20 on the UK singles chart, beautifully displays the feelings of long-lasting love through lyrics such as “When your legs don’t work like they used to before/ And I can’t sweep you off of your feet” and “When my hair’s all gone and my memory fades/ And the crowds don’t remember my name”. This heartfelt song sung with casual electric guitar and piano draws in audiences with its meaningful lyrics and loving emotions that Ed seamlessly weaved into the
Countless people around the world listen to various styles of music. Despite the genre, whether it be country or hip hop, these songs deliver a message onto it’s listeners daily. Same songs could have a different meaning to different people depending on the experiences that they go through or the tribulations that one is currently facing. Spotless Minds by Jhene Aiko offers a message about love and how although love could be a blessing, it can also act as a curse. This song should not be viewed as merely a song, but more like a lesson that is teached using only a few lyrics. The deeper the context, the more meaning the song will have on particular people. The art in the way these lyrics are carefully composed, when sung, conveys a bittersweet message that reminds listeners of the joys and miseries of love as well as the experiences that Jhene went through. The lyrics, the deeper meanings hidden behind stanzas, and the relatability of this song are reasons why Spotless Minds is an interesting yet harsh reality that love isn’t how people see it in the movies. This song carries in it a meaning of true love that yearns to be heard around the world. Whether heard by a married couple or a high school relationship that is still blossoming, this song speaks to all who are willing to listen.
Evelyn is not an ordinary woman, she is an inspirational lady, who has revealed that only the strong individuals could overcome the obstacles that come their way. She learned not only how to fight her disability, but also how to be connected with music and feel the dynamics. Evelyn reveals how listening and sound is different for her. For her she has to follow instructions on how to play, where the tempo markings are and how music is quick. The beauty of listening to music is not through your ears, but also can be felt through her arms as well. For Evelyn music is all about experiences and for her listening to music is more of an art. Evelyn is a great example of what true life is due to the fact that she is deaf but can still truly listen to music through her heart. She is a relevant example to my life, since she feels and understands music through her heart and so do I try to connect with the singer and listen through the
On the eve of November 23rd 2015, I interviewed my grandfather, Benny Reno Emerson, on the influence of music in his life. During the interview we talked about how long music has been a part of his life and how it has shaped who he is today. We also touched on three songs that meant the most to him. The three songs that he claimed to be the most significant to him were “K.T.”, “Kill the Pain”, and “I’m a girl watcher”; all songs that he has performed live, at stages across the Midwest, including the well know Wisconsin summer musical festival Summer Fest.
Recently, as one of the earliest pioneer of electronic music, German group Kraftwerk has been nominated for the 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I think more electronic artists including DJs will be nominated later. In 2041, I believe Calvin Harris will be the inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Calvin Harris, who is also known as the king of collaboration, has been criss crossing genres for many years. For example, Harris’s collaboration with Rihanna “We Found Love” in 2011, was a huge success, giving him the first number one on the Billboard Hot 100. This year, Harris worked with Rihanna again and made “This is What You Came For”, which was not his best genre, Deep House, but Harris did not disappointed his fans. Most of his songs
In each song, Wisdom declared he shares about himself, his experiences and his life as it is today. In his first song “This Is My Life”, the lyrics delivered in a sort of spoken word form looked into the type of person he used to be, sharing personal trials and tribulations. As he spoke with his voice, body and hands, he conveyed thoughtful expression and various emotions. Usually accompanied by Josh Mayer and his acoustic guitar, a light band and his friend Nikia Comfort offered a change of pace. Comfort added a complimenting female essence to Wisdom’s performance. In a flurry of alternated verses, the duo touched not just on Wisdom’s life, but issues of today, the generic stereotype of Hip Hop culture and being a woman in a “man’s world”. However, not all the songs were so intense and thought provoking as Wisdom dedicated a song to his love and soon to be Wisdom child.
Interpretive Example Four An artist’s craft allows them to express deeply held emotions. Symbolism and metaphors can hide these meanings, but with music the lyrics often express emotions clearly. These lyrics show not only what the artist feels, but also what they think society expects them to feel, and therefor will purchase. I was recently listening to music, and a song called “Locked Away”, by R. City featuring Adam Levine came on.
This soundtrack emulates Ed’s elation since he knows he will still be alive despite his arterial disease. After the kiss, Ed makes a sarcastic remark saying “Here we are again, male school mom”. This is a huge tension that arises in Ed’s character. In making this statement, Ed is essentially realizing his lack of power in the hands of his spouse, his job and ultimately his life. He probably noticed this idea since he had such a close brush with death.
The discourse of authenticity in mass music culture has consistently been a recurring topic; from the mid-1960s onwards, the rise of rock n’ roll intensified a strong culture explicitly concerned with the authenticity of musical artists.1 Remaining increasingly valued, a certain popular music approach emerged, privileging anti-commercial, direct relationships between the autonomous act and its audience 2 over manufactured, commoditized acts mediated before cultural consumption. The conflict between commerce and authenticity3 portrays popular music industrial personnel and practices as ingenuine, manipulative, and corrupted. However, Ed Sheeran, known as an “unconventional pop star”, 4 appears to defy his commercial surroundings; despite prominence in an industry viewed with negative skepticism, his success revolves the rhetoric of true merit and talent. Whether legitimate or not, Sheeran’s perceived passion and genialness should not be absorbed as is; like all cultural texts, Sheeran’s image and music is neither autonomous nor uninterrupted in cultural-industrial contexts. By analyzing Sheeran’s strategic brand management and marketing, this essay will argue that authenticity within the music industry is often enhanced and promoted for profit, and in this case, affecting the direction and contents of Sheeran’s sophomore album, x (pronounced “multiply”). Ultimately, cultural texts that reach a popular audience are always under market-oriented influences, no matter how hidden
He speaks of real life situations. I enjoyed listening to song “Somehow” from his album Big Dog because it spoke about the hard world we live in, poverty and the homeless. He refers to the homeless as “the sadness at your feet.” It is a very touching song about the reality of the world we live in and about the hard times and about not giving up. Albert Castiglia states since when has kindness been a crime further the song states “time for sharing and caring….I pray for a better future for your children and for mine….I know we are gonna make it somehow.” A powerful statement Albert Castiglia says is “spread a little more love seeds.” Albert Castiglia facial expressions make the song more powerful and the mood of sadness was reflected from emotions. He engages with the audience and makes the audience feel a part of his music. As stated in his Website “Castiglia is an artist who sings from the gut, shoots guitar licks from the hip and writes songs that articulate ones hopes, fears and heartaches.” The song “Somehow” was my favorite song because of the powerful message but I also enjoyed listening to “Where Did I Go Wrong.” This song expressed the struggles of a relationship. The emotions Castiglia transmits from his vocals and guitar playing was amazing. I also enjoyed the song “Bad Years Blues.” This song also talked about the struggles, control of life, and personal issues most can relate to. The song also had sarcasms. Castiglia lyrics say “It’s been a real bad year only 12 years to go.” As discussed in the text book blues had a flare and style of rock-oriented and the use of the electric guitar was powerful Charlton (2015). Castiglia style “combines hardcore blues with soul, rock, and country flavors for a sound that will appeal to rockers and blues purists alike” (Wikipedia contributors,
The album Blonde was released on August 20 of 2016 and was debuted as being number one on the US Billboard 200. The record label of this album is called “Boys Don’t Cry” and the producers include Frank Ocean himself (Executive Producer), Buddy Ross, Francis Starlite, Pharrell Williams and many more. Similarly to his previous albums, Blonde is a mixture of R&B, psychedelic pop and soul all within an album. The lyrical melodies, abstract tunes, and gospel elements are some of the fundamentals that make up this album’s genres. While Blonde included the drums, backing vocals, and violins, the piano and guitar seem to dominate the whole album. Blonde was released four years after his latest album called Channel Orange. In this album, we can see
Though the album the “Darkness on the Edge of Town” it failed to generate any real hit singles. The singer is singing about a reason, the reason is that a male likes racing in the streets, but he mainly talks about his wife. That was the singer's passion and he could not live a married life and give up racing. So for This particular character, he chose a life of doing what he was passionate about instead of taking the footpaths of least resistance. It is the thing that we are passionate about and we would live our life without getting confused. the character, the singer sang about coming to understand that and had no regrets
Ed sheeran was born on the 17th of February 1991 in Halifax, England. He learnt guitar at a young age and began writing his own songs. When he was a teenager he moved to London to pursue his music. found me. His sound was more of classic rock, with hints of a heavier style, but not metal. In his lyrics I found comfort and insight, and I became transfixed by his performance of such beautiful songs. Eric’s music transcended a powerful sense of authenticity through his poetry and haunting melodies. Because of the passion of his music, he helped me to heal my hidden emotional wounds. Music can bring peace and healing.
“When she was just a girl. She expected the world, but it flew away from her reach. So she ran away in her sleep” (AZ lyrics 1). This is the lyrics to a Coldplay song that many people enjoy, but not many people know. So what is it that makes Coldplay unique from other bands? In my opinion I will say their music. Not only is it different, but when listening to their music you can almost picture yourself living it. Coldplay in my opinion is one of the best bands. Their music is truly amazing, melodious, soothing and unique. Every time I listen to Coldplay my sole seems to leave my body and goes into another dimension. The lyrics, the beat, it is different from all this music that people tend to hear now in days. The lyrics are simple and relatable.
For Mike Shinoda this particular theme was very challenging to write about because of the subject itself and because it would never come out the way he wanted to. “There had been this theme in my head that I wanted to write about for five years, and I kept trying it and writing songs about it, and it never worked. It would always be too dorky or too cheesy or whatever. And somehow, when I sat down with this particular music, this thing that I had been trying to write about for five years came out in two hours – just flew out on the page”(qtd. In Soghomonian). The song also help Mike to release those emotions onto the paper instead of bottling the emotion inside, “Yeah, yeah, it’s was very therapeutic” (qtd. In Soghomonian). This song also meant a lot to his close friend/lead vocals Chester Bennington because of the struggle with his drug addiction. “After seeing Mike Shinoda’s lyrics, Bennington broke down and had a hard time performing this song live for years afterward because of how close to home these lyrics were for him”(merrymuzak). The band pour all the feeling from the lyrics into making a unique and meaningful music
