Ed Sheeran’s X was a sweeping success hitting number one in fifteen countries and topping charts in the United Kingdom and United States. Being only his second album ever released, this was quite a feat. The album contained songs of Ed’s various styles from gentle love songs to upbeat hip hop to quick rap and showed that Ed knows what he’s doing in the music world. Due to the personal experiences, passionate emotions, and diverse musical styles poured into X, Ed’s album captivated crowd internationally and proved that once again, he has what it takes to be a star. Ed’s music is so enjoyable to such large crowds because of the way he relates his own experiences into the lyrics of his music. For example, in his song “I’m A Mess”, Ed sings of his confused thoughts and desperate actions after a breakup, He sings,”oh I’m a mess right now, inside out/ Searching for sweet surrender but this is not the end.” This very relatable statement is the base message of the song and means that he is emotionally confused and thinks that there is a way to put his relationship back together. Because of Ed’s simple, yet artistic lyrics, his audiences can relate to his experiences which connects him to his audiences.
His other song “Thinking Out Loud”, his most successful song hitting number 2 on the Billboard hot 100 and top 20 on the UK singles chart, beautifully displays the feelings of long-lasting love through lyrics such as “When your legs don’t work like they used to before/ And I can’t sweep you off of your feet” and “When my hair’s all gone and my memory fades/ And the crowds don’t remember my name”.
