Adding to the problems countries and people have to face around the world is a well talked and argued topic of economic inequality. To begin with, economic inequality can be defined as the division amongst the rich and the poor. Today inequality exists in minimum wage, taxes, etc. all of these forms of inequality can affect the well-being or family of a person. Like Pope Francis said, “The first task is to put the economy at the service of people. Human beings and nature must not be at the service of money” the economy inequality must be fixed whether it is through taxation or distributing minimum wage equally. In the USA, the economy in which it relies heavily on has its flaws from many Americans living off the minimum wage …show more content…
Well if the rich continue to get wealthier and the poor get much more poor this can lead to the middle class getting destroyed which would jeopardize the country. Like stated above, the country can’t solely rely on the rich as it will hugely affect the poor hence why a country needs a middle class to be stable. In the US other factors of a person can affect the person's chance of receiving a job he or she may desperately need. In a study done it showed that, “ job applicants with white names needed to send 10 resumes to get one callback, but the black candidate needed to send 15 for one” which shows how just a person's name or ethnicity can affect their chances of getting a job when it should be the person's skills that should revised more. Relating to this is a line from Leo Tolstoy’s “Strider”, “If he had been better fed the skin would have been fine” if this horse was from a different species (ethnicity) then the horse would have been treated much more better and be worth more. According to UW Today, “A Washington family of four must spend 46 percent more on average to make ends meet today than 13 years ago” giving a sense that prices have risen noticeably over the years but minimum wages are hardly being changed. In a family, problems like these can create tension amongst siblings. Marriages, especially can be harmed by parents stressing over how little they are making or how to get a hold of basic necessities like food, shelter or health care. Throught Animal Farm, all the animals who would work everyday, restlessly would continuously get their food rations cut during times in which food was running low yet the pigs would still have plenty of food to eat just because they claimed to have need it for being
Economic inequality has been steadily growing over the past decades. According to this article, “In more recent years, accumulation of wealth by economic elites has received greater attention. Not only are the rich becoming richer, but the disparities are growing the fastest at the top. In the United States, for example, growth in wealth has occurred mainly at the very top of the scale.” (Hansen 457). This means that wealth begins to expand and business owners earn more, however pay more but not a lot more then previously. This would be a good thing, but not everyone in America is a business owner. In fact, the majority of citizens slightly benefited from the growing economy. While most view the economy as unequal, the upper class and even U.S representatives consider it fair and justified (Kraus and Callaghan
Superior authorities that are discriminatory and unequal to others because of ones status have shaped our society to the way it is now. To this day we still encounter income inequalities in the United States. Social inequality gap between who can afford the healthcare. Superior people who are in charge don’t make it easy for low-income families to afford healthcare. Minority groups hold far fewer net financial assets than whites. We are categorized in groups, upper class, middle class and lower class. When health is a service, the poor are more likely to experience illness caused by poor diet, to live and work in unhealthy environments, and are less likely to challenge the system. In the United States, a disproportionate number of racial minorities
Income inequality is one of the greatest problems facing the United States today. It is important for everyone to understand what this means and why this is a problem.
Amongst all of the presidential candidates of the 2016 race, one in particular stands above the rest. Bernie Sanders, running as a democrat, holds the highest capability to better the nation amongst all other candidates.
Single Black Female BA Seeks Educated Husband: Race, Assortative Mating and Inequality is an article that addresses income inequality in the United States by presenting how people choose their spouses. Rodrigue and Reeves (2015) show the correlation between choice of a spouse and education, income level, and race. They further present data on existing marriage gaps in relation to education, race and income level in the United States. Key in their argument are two issues: “assortative mating” and “marriage gaps”. This paper explores the authors’ arguments on “assortative mating” and “marriage gaps” and presents opinions on how “marriage gaps” can be addressed.
Without realizing it, most of us live in a bubble. This impermeable layer makes us oblivious to what's going on in the world and ignorant to the truth. The media is powerful, but there is a huge difference between seeing something, and experiencing it in person. After 17 years of living in that bubble, I finally popped it and opened my eyes to a world I had never felt before. Colombia, like many developing nations, faces rampant income inequality that acts as a huge barrier for the country to make a leap towards economic prosperity. But to truly understand this great monster in our world called "income inequality", you have to experience both extreme living conditions. And during the summer, I was able to do just that. In 24 hours. With an
society, the idea of income inequality is a frequent topic of argument. Many believe that a large income inequality distribution has a negative effect on a society, while others feel that it has very minor, nonexistent, or even positive effect. Some of the factors that affect the income inequality in the United States are low minimum wages, education, and discrimination of race and gender. The swelling income inequality gap in the United States has created numerous social, health, and human capital problems. There is a ton of information to digest regarding who the majority of money is split between and who is actually benefitting from it. There are numerous factors that affect the income inequality and the data associated with the results of it are rather
What is Income Inequality? Well “Income Inequality is the unequal distribution” of family or individual wage over the different individuals in an economy. Income inequality is often showen up “as the percentage of income to a percentage of population” (Staff.) Income inequality creates and impacts the U.S. in different aspects, whether it is distinguished by “region, gender, education and social status” (Staff), as well as there are certain causes and potential solutions to resolve the problems that Income Inequality creates.
As an American, we revel in our freedoms. Not everything is free, however, we have laws that were created for safety. They help keep everyone happy, alive and well. The foundation for these laws came from the founding fathers; they wished for Americans alive then, alive now, and alive years from now feeling safe and free. However, there are fatal flaws in the documents created by the founding fathers. These documents are not effective in establishing and preserving freedoms of Americans because they confined the definition of a valued American to white males as well as allowed the means of corruption to enter our laws through lack of rigidity.
The debate over whether income inequality should be an important topic in comparison to other issues that our nation faces. Income inequality an be defined as “the extent to which income is distributed in an uneven manner among a population (dictionary.com).”According to the Census Bureau who reported that there has been a “rise in income inequality in America, the gap between rich and poor in New York is getting worse (CQ Researcher, pg. 991)”. Right America has one of the largest inequality gap, in comparison to India and the African nation of Burkina Faso (CQ Researcher, pg. 991)”. This debate over income inequality has been inconsistent. Some do not see an issue with the way that money is distributed, while other see this issue as a major problem that our nation faces and strategies/ policies needs to be implemented to address this issue. I
Social inequality exists in the United States through the Elite’s power to maintain their dominance in the United States capitalist system. The Elite Ruling class is made of the upper class and this class of individuals share similar ideology and are the members of the United State’s Superstructure. The Elite Ruling Class members of society are the decision and policy makers in the United States. Research and history has proven that many policies and decisions made by the Elite Ruling Class serve their own interest and promote their ideas. These decisions are the source of the inequality in the United States and it contributes to their ability to maintain their dominant status. The inequality is trickled down to the other classes through social policy and social institutions that affect our lives everyday citizens. A major example of this social inequality can be seen in the United States housing market or home ownership. A significant amount of studies, statics and data supports the evidence of social inequality within the US housing market or home ownership. The following passages will discuss social inequality in the United States as it is connected to Karl Marx’s theory of capitalism’s power and influence of the Elite Dominant i.e. the Ruling Class view as it relates to homeownership within the United States. Karl Marx’s theory however focuses mostly on economic s and the difference between upper and lower class not race. It is also important to point out that the Elite
Income inequality in the United States has been increasing gradually as from the 20th century where there was economic stability. It is estimated that around a quarter of the American worker population receives not more than $10 in an hour. Through this condition, it creates an income that is below what the federal poverty level demands. Those who receive low income include the fast food employees, cashiers, nurse's aides and many more. Other individuals get good payments which are above $10 per hour. Wealth inequality in America is quite common as there are those who are the major economic block and those who can’t afford even the three meals in a day. The social issues that income and wealth inequality might cause in the United States include poverty, household debts becoming high, high crime rates, no health insurance for the low-income families, high mobility rates, high crime rates and school dropouts.
In an economy, income inequality means the unequal distribution of household or individual income over many participants. It is also often presented as a percentage of income for a given percentage of the population. Most people associated income inequality with the concept of income fairness. Assuming that the rich have a larger share of the income of a country than the population in general, then they acknowledge it unfair. What causes the income inequality might be vary? It could be region, education, sex as well as social status. Income is the amount of money you earn from your job or investment. However, wealth is the amount you own, such as car, home, retirement amount, saving accounts, and so on. Even though, we are not living in the
The study of inequality in America is vital to understanding the complicated political and social issues in America. Barrington, Illinois, my home town, is the picture of upper-middle class suburbia. It is a town with very little inequality, and very little diversity, but one which reveals some basic truths about inequality in America. One must first look at a snapshot of what Barrington socioeconomic structure is, then evaluate this structure through the theories of inequality. After these, and a quick evaluation of preconceived notions on Barrington’s inequality versus the real data, and a comparison of Barrington’s data to that of the United States as a whole, some conclusions can be drawn. These data reveal a strong correlation between Barrington’s lack of economic inequality, and lack of demographic and social diversity.
Income inequality in America has been a major issue for years. We can see the uneven distribution by comparing one of the world’s wealthiest man in Bill Gates to the average person. He has made over 50 billion dollars in his lifetime. Comparing him to the average person who makes 37 thousand dollars a year. Although, unemployment rate has decreased in the U.S, the gap between rich and poor in this country has dramatically increased. There are many contributions to the gap, such as different education levels among citizens, living conditions, taxes, difference between salaries, and more. Income inequality in the U.S needs to be addressed. This horrible problem in our country
