This article reveals how eating disorders can affect teens functioning in school and their ability to learn. This article has listed several ways the disorder has a negative impact in school such as bad behaviour, unable to concentrate and less active. This article also contains statistics that a nutrition therapy clinic had surveyed, they found that teens diagnosed with eating disorders spend time thinking about either food, weight or hunger which leads to not paying attention in school. This article is useful due to the survey they did and their findings that will help for this research report. The list that is provided will also be put into great use due to the variety of negative impacts that are listed. The list is easy to understand
Eating disorders in children, like in adults, are generally viewed as a multi-determined syndrome with a variety of interacting factors, biological, psychological, familial and socio-cultural. It is important to recognize that each factor plays a role in predisposing, precipitating, or perpetuating the problem.
Eating disorders are sweeping this country and are rampant on junior high, high school, and college campuses. These disorders are often referred to as the Deadly Diet, but are often known by their more popular names: anorexia or bulimia. They affect more than 20% of females between the age of thirteen and forty. It is very rare for a young female not to know of someone with an eating disorder. Statistics show that at least one in five young women have a serious problem with eating and weight (Bruch, 25).
Coupled with these physical changes, low self-esteem and negative thoughts and emotions about body image and self-worth can contribute to eating disorders in young people. Also the butterfly advice people if you suspect that you or someone you know has Binge Eating Disorder, it is important to seek help immediately. The aim of this literature review is to describe the main causes of eating disorders among teenagers aged 12 to 18 years old in high schools globally, and to also explain to what extend do some of these causes influence eating disoders. Recent studies have indicated a major increase in the eating disorder habits and body dissatisfaction in adolescence over the past few decades. Today’s modern, prevalent culture is driven by media and fastidious standards of beauty and perfectionism. The demand to attain the ideal body and weight that meets the unrealistic standard encumbrances individuals in a myriad of ways. These pressures can be felt in the hallways and classrooms of our schools. Eating disorders are a potential and critical concern that students may encounter in schools. Eating disorders include the categorical diagnosis of bulimia nervosa. Hoek and van Hoeken (2003) reported that the prevalence of bulimia nervosa has tripled from 1988-1993 for woman ages ten to thirty-nine. Many people who develop eating disorders do not seek the essential help they need and attempt to mask the serious illness. Thus, the estimated reports of bulimia nervosa are presumably subordinate (Heok & van Hoeken, 2003). It is important for school counselors to understand bulimia nervosa in its entirety. The knowledge of the disorder’s etiology, course, gender and diversity issues, and treatment approaches will further develop school counselors’ ability to advocate for students affected by this disorder and provide adequate support services.

Karen Carpenter, a former singer, died from cardiac arrest at the age of 32, for years she suffer from severe anorexia. Another singer name Demi Lovato, has become one of the most outspoken about her mental issues within her eating disorder (n.d.). Sharon Osbourne, wife of Ozzy Osbourne and former ‘The Talk’ host, Sharon has struggled with bulimia for over 30 years. Another famous daytime talk show host, Oprah Winfrey is a sufferer of disordered eating.

In the past few decades, eating disorders have become more and more prevalent in western countries. A lot of people suffered from the diseases, for example, famous Princess Diana has struggled with bulimia for many years. The adolescents with eating disorders often fight against body weight control by the means of starvation, binging or purging. The aim of this poster is to gather information about eating disorders in children between the ages of 6 and 15 and to see if there is being done as much for these children as there is for adolescents and adults who suffer from an eating disorder.
