The private and public leisure activities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were largely abundant. Many activities could be participated in and were used often. These include Drama performances, gladiatorial games, drinking, gambling, brothels, exercise, gardens, baths and food and dining. All these were an important part of Pompeian and Herculaneum life. They were seen as important to keep the body and mind healthy in most cases. Though some opposed some of the activities like brothels, gambling and drinking. But all give a important look into the life of those in Pompeii and Herculaneum before the catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius which completely destroyed
Pompeii used to exist in Italy, in the colony of Naples. Establish on the Italian Coast. It rests on a stimulus conceive by a lava issue, fair north of the Sarno River. Present-day, it is detected more interior land, before, it was nearby to the coast. In addition to was a bigger city Campania.
Pompeii and Herculaneum blossomed near Mount Vesuvius, an active volcano that nobody knew about. At the time 20,000 people lived in Pompeii and 5,000 people lived in Herculaneum. Pompeii was a beautiful place and loved by many. Herculaneum was loved by many also, the wealthy Romans liked going to Herculaneum for vacation. The two places were the main spots to go in Italy, they were enjoyed by some and loved by many.
Historians consider the Forum to be the ‘centre of Pompeian life’ therefore it is an important aspect to study as numerous buildings and many events occurred there. From the latest evidence, it is believed that the Pompeian Forum was undergoing a ‘comprehensive, vigorous and ambitious post-earthquake restoration.’ (Bradley. 2005, p.87). The Forum at Herculaneum, however, is still buried under the town of Resina and therefore there is not enough physical evidence to provide a great depth of information. Studies were concentrated on the Forum at Pompeii.
In relation to source 10, The House of the Gladiators collapsed in 2010 (this may not link to source 10), however it is one of the major buildings in Pompeii that have collapsed. This brought worldwide attention and made radical reforms and outlined the corrupt nature of conserving the sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The cause was due to heavy rain, the decaying restored concrete roof, management incompetence and political neglect.
Most of the Italian municipalities in their time had a Forum, a square in their town where the political, commercial, and social lives are all intertwined. Not only did it act as a social meeting place for the residents, but it also functioned as the primary religious and economic sector of the city. In Pompeii the Forum was a large area measuring at around 157 by 38 metres, not including all the surrounding buildings (Unfortunately in Herculaneum, the forum is still uncovered). The Forum was lined with the most important buildings in the city. (See figure 1) In Pompeii particularly, the forum held the Municipal offices (A), Basilica (B), Temple of Apollo (C), Forum Olitorium (vegetable market) (C), Latrines (public toilets) (D), Temple of Jupiter (E), Macellum (marketplace) (F), Temple of the Lares (G), Temple of Vespasian (I), Building of Eumanchia (J), and a Comitium (voting house) (K). On the western side of the forum, there is a pedestal, built for outspoken orators. This served as a location where people could express their views on current situations, usually political.
Pompeii “In the darkness you could hear the crying of women, the wailing of infants, and the shouting of men. Some prayed for help. Others wished for death. But still more imagined that there were no Gods left, and that the universe was plunged into eternal darkness.” written by Pliny Younger in 79 A.D. shows an extraordinary view of people during the tragic destruction of a beautiful city known as Pompeii home to over 20,000 people was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius over 2,000 years ago.
Life in Pompeii was over all serene, in the Italian countryside of Campania. The city was fairly large and was about five miles southeast of base of Mount Vesuvius. ( Gracco, Tiberio. “Welcome to Ancient Pompeii.”) Pompeii was quite advanced for its time with a
Instead of leaving Pompeii to dissolve into history, educational researchers such as National Geographic have continued conducting studies about the fall of Pompeii, because forgetting about the historical event would be detrimental to further knowledge on Roman culture in Italy. Life under Mount Vesuvius was full of promise and prosperity for the newly settled Greeks in the 8th century B.C. The vast area around the towering volcano attracted lots of people seeking a paradise-like land for their vacation needs. Along with Pompeii’s paradise attraction, the rich volcanic soil gave way to agricultural growth for the Greek settlers. Mount Vesuvius's overhang gave the settlers a sense of protection and security. Once early settlement gave way and the very basic foundations of civilization began to grow, Greek colonies soon established themselves in Campania along with the Etruscans.
It all happened three days ago, the destruction of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Stabiae, Torre Annunziata and other regional communities near the southeast of Mt Vesuvius, but also the death of more than 5,000 civilians and even the new candidates for the roles of Governor- Marcus Lucretius and his family.

Given the historical significance of the devastation of Mount Vesuvius’ destruction of Ancient Pompeii, the cultural existence of this lost city lies buried within the remains of the ancient people and the context it brings through new data. To gain context of the lives lost, much of their history must be explored through the remains of Pompeii’s lost people by further observation of lesions on the bones and through analysis of dental caries or indicators of quality of health. Recent excavations and research of Pompeian skeletons through technological advancements has revealed, in greater detail, the health of the people – such as, with computer tomography scans they indicated they had almost perfect, white teeth from “low-sugar diet[s], rich in fruit and vegetables” and fluorine from their water (Fessenden 2015).
Before we start, let me ask a question. What comes to your mind when you hear of the word Medea? There are no right or wrong answer, but hold on to your answer. The author, Euripides portray Medea as an egalitarianism. Euripides is known for breaking the Greek sex gender system and he was intrigued by women's position in society.
Although people believe people have finally stopped classing people in social classes people still subconsciously classify themselves and other’s in these classes that people believe people have gotten rid of. One may think that the poor are represented and treated well; however, in reality people represent the poor as people that do not have a full life and people who do not have values. Moreover, people put honesty and integrity into the rich, and do not trust the poor and believe that anything bad or negative was caused by them. Poor people are usually more likely than others to share among the people between them. For example, poor people are willing to share
