It was June of 1993. My dad, Ernest Scammell, was stationed in Leticia, Columbia, and my mom, Briahna Scammell, was in the city as well. The whole city was partying and there was a parade honoring Miss Columbia, who had won second place in the Miss Universe pageant. Both of my parents, my dad with his air force buddies, and my mom with her friends, were out on the town unknowingly about to meet each other. Now, my dad tells this story all the time. He says “The whole busy street of partying people went silent as soon as I saw her. Like they weren’t even there.” However, this is not the ending, this is hardly the beginning. My dad and his buddies were out and given specific instructions not to leave the place they were at, not to go on the
Its was June of 2008, and the rain was coming down harder than ever. We were at a wedding reception in Des Moines, Iowa. Why were we even here when there are annoying beeping sounds all over, from the phones. We all started dancing and having fun until… my dad, Michael received a call from a friend. Wide eye stare as he frantically looks around the room. Then he whispers something into my mom, Hillary’s ear and she panicked. My sister, Lauren and I were having the best time dancing and playing around the room when my mom grabs my hand and says…
In August 2001, it was discovered that the McDonald’s Monopoly game was a fraud. Simon Marketing, which ran the game on behalf of McDonald’s was responsible for the fraud. An investigation was initiated pursuant to a confidential tip. The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and dubbed Operation “Final Answer”. During the investigation to uncover the fraud, the FBI used several different forms of surveillance. In this paper I will describe how the actual fraud was committed and subsequent aftermath of the investigation.
I interviewed my mom on September 11, 2016. My mom’s name is Lalys Orozco. “During September 11, 2000, I was working at a clinic in Arizona, filing the vaccine sheets and other important information. During the morning, everyone was so paranoid and very frightened. Anxiously, I had asked them what was going on…Then I discovered that, to my surprise, the World Trade Center had collapsed due to two US airplanes crashing into them. One of them had hit the east side and the other plane the west side. Thousands of people had died that day…and the people whom were trapped in the highest floors…didn’t make it out alive. There were a lot of debris, flying in gusts of wind and dust around the big fires burning upon the buildings. I felt bad for the
You did an excellent job answering this week’s discussion board question. You discuse4d several excellent way to identify possible indicator an employee may be involved in fraudulent activity. Being vigilant of changes in employees’ performance, behaviors, and habits is a key way to identify employees that may be involved in fraudulent activity. However, this also applies when considering hiring new employee, especially if they will be in direct contact with sensitive information. Pre-employment checks, such as credit checks and background checks, are ways to prevent form hiring employees that might commit fraudulent active. I also noticed that you mentioned that employees that don’t go on vacation very much or at all may indicate
It was on a frigid, dark autumn night that I entered this wonderful world. November 13, 2000, the date, almost November 14th. My siblings had no idea that my name would be Clayton Wayne Griep, and that minutes before midnight on that night I was their brand new brother. A few days later I would leave that hospital in Zeeland, Michigan and be welcomed to my new house, at 4096 Marion St. in Hudsonville, Michigan. Two of my siblings were more than excited to see me, but one didn’t have any idea what was going on. Cam, who was not even a year old, unbeknownst to him, had a new roommate. Jordan, who was in the 2nd grade at the time, was eager to meet me, his eyes constantly locked on me. Jalen, using her newly found vocabulary, probably babbling
Phar-Mor, Inc was a thriving discount grocery store in the late 1980’s. Phar-Mor was moving product quickly but profit margins were not significant enough to pay the bills. By the early 1990’s, Phar-Mor declared bankruptcy due to fraudulent financial reporting and misappropriation of assets, making it one of the largest frauds in U.S. history. Below, we will use auditing standard AU 316.85 Appendix A in conjunction with the video “How to Steal $500 million” to analyze how incentives/pressures, opportunities, and attitudes/rationalizations allowed for fraud to start and continue at Phar-Mor.
Jackson Katz is an antiviolence educator who wants to see a more honest portrayal of men and boys in our society. In the video Tough Guise, he talks about the crisis in masculinity, and how the media has created a link between violence and man hood. Katz describes men and boys as being “boxed in.” They are expected to be strong, tough, and independent, but they cannot be weak or vulnerable in any way. They are stuck in a box where they are very limited in the ways they can express themselves. He also talks about minorities and why they put on the “tough guise.” His explanation is that even men who do not have money have the ability to be “manly,” and look tough. The “tough guise” is a way for men and boys to gain respect in our society no matter their race, religion, economical background, etc. Katz believes the solution to the crisis in masculinity is for it to be socially accepted that compassion, health, and vulnerability are all apart of being a man. It will take more than physical courage to reject the strong link that
This is a short story of my life from a wee little one until now. I was born on a Monday October 18, 1982 to Ricky and Aletha Sprayberry. I have three sisters and two brothers. I had some good and bad in my childhood, teenage years, and as an adult. Like most I do not remember life a baby. The earliest I remember, well don’t really remember I just know of this day due to pictures, is July 4, 1985, I was two years old. We went to Lake Striker for a fourth of July celebration and they was having a beauty contest, I am not sure if it was for all ages and they had divided ages groups or if it was just a fun thing for the kids. My mom entered me in the contest and low and behold I placed first in the contest. I brought home a ribbon and a trophy. I made the front page the local news paper and my mom has kept up with that clipping all these years. I know have it and keep it safe and sound in my top dresser drawer. She even still had my blue bikini swim suit from then. She gave it to me at some time during my teenage years and I kept it in my memories chest up until my niece, the first of eight grandkids, was born and I let my sister borrow it. Well that was a mistake, I have not seen my memory swim
My life experience while attending Pikes Peak Community College in spring of 2012 seemed to be moving right along. My husband Larry and I decided to take a trip back home to South Carolina when the semester was over. We arose early Friday morning and got on the road around 5:00 am. We continued driving until we reached St. Louis, MO. We had been driving for 16 hrs, therefore we were tired and hungry from driving all day. We decided to stop at Red Roof Inn. We arose the next day at 6:00 am, ate breakfast and proceeded on our way to South Carolina. We arrived at 2:00 pm at my big sister’s Lillie’s house. There we found out that my little sister Sarah had been staying with Lillie for the last four months. As the day continued into the night, we had gotten some news about Sarah
March 19th, 2011 started off as a sun shining, music blasting kind of day. It was a perfect weekend for playing basketball and some team bonding. It was our last hurrah as we were finishing up our AAU traveling team basketball season. Our coach decided to enter us into a 2-day tournament at the UNI-dome. We arrived in Cedar Falls, Iowa and pulled into the parking lot of the UNI-dome, and my dad’s ringtone went off. My grandma’s boyfriend, George, called him. As I was grabbing my bag from the back of the car, I suddenly hear an unfamiliar cry. It’s one that you know
December 15, 2013 was a completely average day until my mom picked me up from school. Noticing the tears streaming down her face, I inquired, “What happened?”
My name is Sarah Lee and I’m going to tell you the story of what happened on September 11th, 2001. My father worked in the North Tower in the World Trade Center. My sister told him she wanted to work there when she was older, so he took her to work with him. I headed to the door, grabbing my shoes along with my mom’s, dad’s, and sister’s. Sitting on the floor, I put my shoes on and went to the kitchen to get a drink. I need to take a walk, smell the fresh air, and think positive so I have a good day. . “I’m going to go outside and take a walk mom,” I call through the house, my hand on the doorknob. ”I’ll be back later.” She said “Alright sweetie. Be safe. See ya later.” I nodded and walked outside.
It was August 19th and my dad, Kenny, was at Marsh where he had been working for for eighteen years. He had arrived at work around 1:00 p.m. Having nothing more to accomplish, he decided to check his email and saw that there was an unread email from Coca-Cola. He opened it. The unread email aforesaid,”Enter for a chance to win a Meet and Greet with Taylor Swift!” So, my dad decided to enter just for the fun of it for the reason of knowing that it was
It was a bone chilling January night; my mom received a call at about 11:15 PM, a call that changed my life forever. My Aunt June was on the other line. She was crying so hard my mother could barely understand her. Through the sobbing my mom finally understood that Brian, my cousin, had been in a horrible accident and she didn’t know how bad it was. My mother jumped out of the bed after she hung up the phone. She screamed up the stairs at my sister and me; it was a nerve shrilling scream. I could hear fear in her voice. My mom was always yelling at us growing up if we forgot to do something. She would even get us out of bed to finish something that wasn’t done completely. This particular
It was May 17th, 2011, it was a normal school day when my brother and I were told that my mom called to say that she was picking us up early. I was anxious, wondering why we were going home early and breaking our usual routine. When my mom came to get us, the first thing that I noticed was that she didn’t greet us with her usual smile. I was 9 years old, very observant, but not able to sense what was to come. We got into the car, when I asked my mom where we were going hoping
