When I think of the early modern era it’s very hard for me to not think of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Growing up as a black man in America it is instilled in me to search the history of my ancestors just to have a sense of who I am and why I am the way I am. Many changes occurred in the world during this time and the world today is a result of what took place in that time of history. In this paper I will explain the changes that impacted that time and how it may have negatively or positively affected the world.
The early modern era for the European was the beginning of world domination. The protestant reformation, their war on the belief systems of people on the world, and discovering new territories is what kicked off colonialism. 22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. 23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness. 24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. 25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. 26 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. 27 God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.
Based on this scripture people believe that Noah had cursed his son Ham with blackness and the condition of slavery. With research I’ve come to the conclusion that this is a misunderstanding of biblical text. These scriptures clearly states that Noah curses Canaan, but somehow this justifies the slavery of the
