When I think of the early modern era it’s very hard for me to not think of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Growing up as a black man in America it is instilled in me to search the history of my ancestors just to have a sense of who I am and why I am the way I am. Many changes occurred in the world during this time and the world today is a result of what took place in that time of history. In this paper I will explain the changes that impacted that time and how it may have negatively or positively affected the world.
The early modern era for the European was the beginning of world domination. The protestant reformation, their war on the belief systems of people on the world, and discovering new territories is what kicked off colonialism. Greece at the end of the classical era having 1/3 of their population being slaves set the standard for the rest

22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. 23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness. 24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. 25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. 26 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. 27 God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.
Based on this scripture people believe that Noah had cursed his son Ham with blackness and the condition of slavery. With research I’ve come to the conclusion that this is a misunderstanding of biblical text. These scriptures clearly states that Noah curses Canaan, but somehow this justifies the slavery of the
In The Poisonwood Bible, one of the most significant allusions refers to the Curse of Ham story in the Bible. Essentially, the prophet Noah became intoxicated and when one of his sons, Ham, found him, began laughing as he called his brothers, Shem and Japheth to cover up their father so they would not have to see his nakedness. Surprisingly, when Noah woke up, he was extremely angry when he found out that Ham has mocked his nudity, so he cursed Ham’s youngest son Caanan.
In the book of Genesis, the story, “Noah and the Flood”, is about a man named Noah who walked with God when nobody else did. The story begins with a summary of humans multiplying on earth after the creation of Adam and Eve. God soon recognized the evil that was taking over man. He started to regret his creation of man. God said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air, for it repenteth me that I have made them.” The only man that still had faith in God, was Noah. God told Noah that “the end of all flesh is come before me…”. He plans to wipe the earth of all life, and Noah and his family are the only people who will survive. Noah is then responsible for building an ark, a ship for his family, and two of every kind of animal on the planet, both female and male. Once Noah finishes, God warns him that the waters will be coming. After seven days, “the waters of the flood were upon the earth”. They then “prevailed upon the earth a hundred and fifty days”, and any remaining life on earth was diminished.
Europeans were bound to give more justifications on why slavery was only intended for Africans, thus they turned to the Bible. The controversial “Story of Ham”, from Genesis 9-10, reads the tale of Ham, a son of Noah, who saw his father intoxicated and sleeping bare (source C). When Noah awoke, he claimed, “Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves shall he be to his brothers” (source C). In the passage, he cursed Ham’s son, Canaan, and his descendants to be the slaves of his own brothers, Shem and Japheth (source C). Historians have debated about the story, in which some believed Ham or Canaan was of African descent, even though it was never mentioned (source C). Others supported the idea that Noah’s sons symbolized a continent’s residents; Ham personified Africa, Shem of Asia, and Japheth of Europe. Ham was also supposedly derived from the ancient Hebrew words that meant black, brown, or dark. Philosopher Robert Boyle from 1644 is one to oppose the theory of Ham’s descent
During the 1400 to 1500s, Europe had new developments due to numerous reasons. First of all, there was a revival of classics from the Greco-Roman era. These texts were pre-Christianity, thus talking about human’s lives in the here and now verses talking about their lives in the afterlife. This eventually led to the development of humanism, where people appreciated their lives. The more texts, the better they felt and the more they wanted to learn. People wanted to become educated in various subjects. Additionally, they saw what Rome was like and wanted to be better than Rome. With that, they also wanted to find trade routes and new land because they wanted to learn more. The revival of the classics allowed people to study the old maps created
In the NIV version of Genesis 9:18-28, Noah's curse was the main reason to why the slave owners had to justify slavery as it tells a story of how Ham, Noah's son, saw his drunken father unclothed, told his brothers about it, and they somehow covered him without looking at him. When Noah woke up and found out what Ham did, he cursed Ham's son, Canaan, and his future descendants. The slave owners interpreted this story as a dishonor to the father, consequently calling for the mistreatment of slaves. Stephen Haynes asserts, "…proslavery southerners were attracted to the story of Noah and Ham because it resonated with their most deeply-held cultural values" and "understood Ham's transgression as a violation of familial loyalty that marked him and his descendants as utterly lacking in honor (and thus fit for slavery)". What Ham did led the slave owners to believe that because of his behavior, slaves needed to be punish for what he
Then again, F.W. Bassett’s opinion was Ham had sex with his mother as well as Marc Vervenne’s opinion was there is more at stake than the acceptability of nudity. Regardless, the sin of Ham was looking at Noah’s nakedness, also telling his brothers. Therefore, Ham disgraced his father robbing him of dignity, paternal authority, also humility. According to Leon Kass, even if Ham didn’t touch Noah, he eliminated the father authority, as guide, as teach of law, custom also the way of life. In other words, as a man Noah was no longer head (Yamauchi
In this essay, I would like to find out how has daily life changed since 1800. In the first part, I will summarise the life in 1500-1800 according to the Blainey chapter. I would like to mainly focus on the issue of agriculture, the issue of hygiene and the issue of housing. And for the second part, I would like to describe and reflect on what I think the most significant differences between life in the 1500 – 1800 and life today.
There are different views concerning Ham’s sin recorded in Genesis 9:20-24. The traditional views include voyeurism, castration, and paternal incest. Bergsma and Hahn have introduced another view known as the maternal-incest view. Bergsma and Hahn have made a persuasive argument that states Ham’s sin was not incest with his father, but that he had sexual incestual relations with his mother. This conclusion has been made from the idiomatic meaning of the phrase בא תורע האר “to see the father’s nakedness” (v. 22). The paternal incest view equates Leviticus 20:17, “to uncover nakedness” as a euphemism for sexual intercourse. The conclusion is then drawn that Ham’s sin of seeing his father’s nakedness must mean he had
“Then Noah began farming and planted a vineyard. He drank of the wine and became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were turned away, so that they did not see their father 's nakedness. When Noah awoke from his wine, he knew what his youngest son had done to him. "Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants He shall be to his brothers." He also said, "Blessed be the Lord, The God
In the Chapters 1-11 of Genesis, God provides the story of creation and the genealogy of those who maintained God’s laws; together with, identifying those from evil lineage, and those who remained pure in the blood and spirit of God. For instance, After Cain killed Abe, God blessed Adam and Eve with Seth, and Cain was removed from God’s presence. This began the first split between good and evil. Likewise, the Bible gives those descendants from Cain and Seth, so future generations know their true lineage and who was responsible for God’s wrath in the great flood. After the flood Noah, Shem, Japheth, Ham, Canaan Ham’s son, and their wives were left to repopulate the world, but Canaan was cursed over something his father did to Noah. This resulted
The Renaissance Era is a period approximately dated from the 1460’s to the 1600’s. It was a period where reason was celebrated and advanced over metaphysics and mysticism. The general conclusion when Renaissance comes to mind always seems to center around the growth of Art and Science. The topic of the contributions made to Psychology by the citizens of the Renaissance Era is often overlooked, and not many are privy to the role Psychology played in the development of the Era by perfecting scientific methods and researching reason, thought, and mental illness. The Renaissance Era was viewed as the “rebirth.” It was a period where people went back to their more “open-minded method of inquiry that had characterized early Greek philosophy. It was
Between the years of 1750 and 1825, classical music took over the entertainment spotlight and is now known as the Classical Era. The musical era was lead in public concert by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven experimenting with lyrical melodies, steady tempos, diatonic harmonies, etc. Additionally, women, such as Maria Anna Mozart and Maria Theresa von Paradis, were given more opportunities in the music industry during classicism.
Music at it’s first start, was a discovery of the musical environment mostly used and practiced in the secular world. At it’s first approach, composer did not have a great melodic pattern and harmony writing their music. However, it sounded great in their ears, because it was something new they was still developing for years. Indeed music was well performed in the medieval period in order to celebrate God and publish a specific message, the Renaissance period took that work made in the medieval era and embellish into a different texture. Although the renaissance era is a period of discovery, composers at this time trust their ears, and considers the musical work of medieval composers being a barbaric style, and changes their entire work into
During the Classical period, it was common for music to be louder, faster and not written for the church like it had been written in the Baroque or Renaissance period. Instead of the music being performed in churches, it was performed in concert halls or in the palace. Some of the most recognizable artists during that time were Mozart, Beethoven, and Hayden.
The Renaissance wasn’t a place, even though it was born in Italy, it was a state of mind, or rather change of mind. The Renaissance grew from those who survived the Dark Ages and Black Death when people thought fate ruled life and there was little hope for change. The people wanted new reasons to live. The intellectuals of the Byzantine Empire left for Italy, a long time trading partner, and brought with them ancient classical texts that Europeans thought were gone forever. The foreign influx with their treasures caused a clash that created a rebirth, a renewed interest in the old. Without the printing press, the Renaissance wouldn’t have transformed the world in such a dramatic way. Print made ancient manuscripts official. Print changed how
